The attorney for former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s brother says his client is overjoyed that he won’t be retried on corruption charge.
Michael Ettinger delivered the surprise news to Nashville, Tenn., businessman Robert Blagojevich Thursday in a brief phone call. He told Blagojevich, “You’re free,” and says Blagojevich yelled “Oh my God, you’re kidding!”
Federal prosecutors say the decision was based on Robert Blagojevich’s less central role in allegedly scheming to sell or trade an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.
But they say they still intend to retry the former governor. A jury last week deadlocked on the four counts against Robert Blagojevich and 23 of 24 counts against the former governor.
