SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – He thought it was trash, but it turned out to be a whole lot more.
A file cabinet filled with dozens of files containing people’s personal information was dumped in a dumpster behind a Shelbyville gas station.
A teenager found it last week. His father called police and 24-Hour News 8.
“It’s metal, he takes it in and tries to sell it to make extra cash,” Chris Admans said of his son’s discovery.
Inside were copies of social security cards, drivers licenses and other personnel documents. Most of them are connected to former employees of Murphy USA gas station.
“Addresses, where they live, I was like, ‘I need to do something with that,’ so we sat it here for a little bit,” Adams said.
“I know the fear of what can happen if someone gets your personal information. A lock only keeps an honest person honest,” Adams added.
Murphy’s Gas Station returned a call from 24-Hour News 8 after a visit to the Shelbyville location.
An official said the documents should have been shredded and they will be looking into why they weren’t.
