Chicago Tribune Writer and WGN Radio Host Rick Kogan Leads Lunchtime Conversations Inspired by Popular Sidewalks Column
Chicago comes alive in words and pictures at a new exhibition featuring photographs by Charles Osgood and stories by Rick Kogan from their Chicago Tribune Sidewalks column.
More than 60 of the most memorable images and stories included in two books, the new Sidewalks II: Reflections on Chicago and Sidewalks: Portraits of Chicago, go on display at the Chicago Tourism Center Gallery, 72 E. Randolph Street, from Nov. 19 to Feb. 28, 2010.
The public is invited to an opening reception for the Sidewalks: Photographs by Charles Osgood & Stories by Rick Kogan exhibition, on Nov. 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Osgood, longtime Chicago Tribune photographer, and Kogan, Chicago Tribune Senior Writer and Columnist and WGN radio host.
On November 20 at 12:15 p.m., Osgood and Kogan host a gallery conversation about their adventures working on the Sidewalks column. On Dec. 18, Jan. 15, and February 19 at 12:15 p.m., join Kogan at the gallery for a series of lunchtime discussions inspired by Sidewalks, including conversations with some of the people featured in the columns. Sidewalks: Charles Osgood and Rick Kogan, Photographs & Stories provides a panoramic slice of the city, exploring neighborhoods near and far with occasional forays to the far-flung reaches of Chicagoland.
Down quiet byways and thriving thoroughfares, Kogan and Osgood find the characters and cornerstones, the oddities and institutions which give Chicago its character. Documenting flora and fauna, both human and otherwise, Kogan and Osgood show the vibrancy of Chicago in the never-ebbing flow of people who work, live and celebrate their lives here.
Charles Osgood began his career as a reporter for the City News Bureau before coming to the Chicago Tribune in 1969. He has also been an adjunct professor of photojournalism at Columbia College since 1991. Osgood left the Tribune in 2008 and continues to pursue freelance work.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, attended Ripon College, and received a master of fine arts in photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Born and raised and still living in Chicago, Rick Kogan has worked for the Chicago Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, and the Chicago Tribune, where he is currently a senior writer and columnist.
Named Chicago’s Best Reporter in 1999 and inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame in 2003, he is the creator and host of WGN radio’s Sunday Papers with Rick Kogan and the author of a dozen books, including Everybody Pays: Two Men, One Murder and the Price of Truth (with Maurice Possley); America’s Mom: The Life, Lesson and Legacy of Ann Landers; and A Chicago Tavern, the history of the Billy Goat.
Chicago Tourism Center Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday, 8 am – 7 pm; Friday, 8 am to 6 pm; Saturday, 9 am – 6 pm; and Sunday, 10 am – 6 pm.
