Shocking layoffs at Elgin school district

ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM)  — Major layoffs have been announced in the Elgin School District U-46.

Elgin school officials have announced over 1,000 layoffs tonight at a school board meeting. But not just teachers. Hundreds of other school employees as well.

Tony Sanders is the spokesman for School District U-46, which includes Elgin and Bartlett, and he says the state money just isn’t there to help the district.

“This will not be an easy meeting. It’ll be very emotional. I expect many employees and many community members to come out to share how these reductions will impact their school.”

Sanders says the school district is looking at increased class size and closing an Early Childhood center.

“There will be many things that will be on this list,” Sanders says, “that will hurt students for years to come.”

Among the Elgin teachers reportedly getting layoff notices: Carolyn Gilbert, who lost an eye when a student stabbed her two years ago.

Unbelievable! They fired Carolyn Gilbert(??!!), who went back into the classroom after the district and (specifically) the Kane County prosecutor’s office failed to protect her from a nutcup student who was already under investigation and supposed to be charged in the rape, five months prior, of an 8-year-old and who had tried to abduct a 13-year-old from the middle school TWO DAYS before? Carolyn Gilbert should sue their collective asses back into the stone age. All she said when interviewed was that she thought the district at least owed her her job. Are you KIDDING? They let this kid into the school with a serrated kitchen knife and trailing a string of crimes. They are leaving her with nothing whatsoever to lose by suing them bigtime. Who makes such crass and demonstrably stupid decisions, and why on Earth should they be working as a SCHOOL administrator?!
