SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – The South Bend City Council has voted down a proposed ordinance extending employment discrimination protection to gays and lesbians.
The council voted 6-3 Monday night against the measure, which drew large crowds of supporters and opponents to debates about it.
Council President Derek Dieter said he voted against the ordinance because he hadn’t seen any documented instances of such discrimination in the city and worried that it would cause more harm than good to small businesses.
The South Bend Tribune reports that after the vote, supporters of the ordinance marched through downtown. Supporter Hank Mascotte said he was disappointed but that the push for the anti-discrimination measure would continue.
