Wheaton, Ill. — Concerns about coyotes have residents of Wheaton calling on the city council to take action.
At a council meeting Tuesday night residents argued for a plan to trap and kill the animals.
“It’s not just a mere nuisance, we have a reasonable fear for our beloved pets and our children,” said Annette Corrigan.
The problem, people say, is that the number of coyotes seems to have grown tremendously in the past year, and the carnivores, which are indigenous to the area, are getting more and more comfortable being around people.
Tony Parla saw two run across his backyard Tuesday afternoon. He worries about his two small dogs, and his son being out in the backyard alone.
“They don’t back away, that’s the biggest concern. In the past if you saw a coyote and clapped your hands whatever, it would take off. They don’t any more. They keep coming closer and closer,” Parla said.
Rebecca Barnett’s cat Jinx was mauled and killed by a coyote last September. Another time two threatened her daughter.
“She was running on our back road and was stopped at the bridge by two adult coyotes and they would not let her go past,” Barnett said.
The city council had given preliminary approval to a plan to trap and remove coyotes.
One resident raised concerns about tax dollars, and the danger of trapping.
“Leg hold traps can maim and or kill humans, companion animals or non-targeted wildlife, some of which are protected by law,” said Gloria DeLuca
Councilman John Prendiville wants the trapping plan halted before it comes to a vote.
“If a particular animal attacks or actively threatens humans I will take action against that animal,” he said, “but I can’t support the preemptive killing of wild animals to protect pets. Revenge for the death of a pet is not sufficient reasons for killing coyotes.”

You had some good factors here. I accomplished a analysis to the topic and got most peoples will concur together with your website.
It was unstoppable and sure, it’s all salient.
This should give you some intriguing concepts to play with.
stop the killing of coyotoes… stupid people are doing to animals like we did to the american indians. the wild animals land is being taken away from them…construction etc. and ;people in general are just stupid about animals…. if they see a skunk or other animal in their yard, they call the police…ignorant.
there is no case in history of a coyote harming or attacking a person….
you should be taking care of your pets by keeping them in the house.
stop the insanity of killing something because you dont like it.
Give me a break! Coyotes do not attack people, and are for the most part, nocturnal. Stop buying sissy “teacup” or mix-breed “foo-foo” dogs and you will not have a problem with Coyotes killing your pets!
Why kill them?
So a concerned citiczen saw run run through their yard—yea, what is the harm in that? People need to educate themselves before freaking out about this.
And now I am crying. Not to mention scared to take my dog for a walk in the nearby woods. The traps are what I fear NOT the coyotes I see everyday.
I am writing to ask you, the mayor and councilmen of Wheaton, to pause a moment to reflect on the potential consequences of your coyote trapping program. Are you aware that traps, including snares, can harm or kill family pets as well as the coyotes?
My dog was killed over a year ago by a trap here in Illinois. He was a beautiful 55-pound Chinook therapy dog who was sniffing under the bushes in a residential area while we were out for a walk on an early Saturday morning. The baited trap hidden there proved too much of a temptation. Within seconds, his head was crushed by the trap’s steel jaws. He never had a chance.
But it wasn’t an instantaneous death. He was alive as I struggled to remove the trap and I had to endure his howls and thrashing even as I realized that it would not budge. He died right before my eyes. I was devastated. It was only later that I realized how easily that trap, which took three men to remove, could have killed a child.
I contend that these traps are not humane to animals, and furthermore, that they pose a deadly hazard to populated communities because of their potential to seriously injure or kill unintended victims. Ironically, while Wheaton may be trying to protect free roaming companion animals from coyotes, you may be putting them in more harm’s way by allowing indiscriminate devices to be placed on your property that ultimately endanger all animals.
I ask that you stop trapping and killing coyotes in your village and consider more humane ways to deal with them. There are wildlife organizations out there with considerable experience that could help you and I have put them in contact with you so they can offer their services to develop proactive and effective public education and outreach programs. I urge you to call them and be open to what they have to say.
Yes, I lost a wonderful companion. I am influenced by the anguished sounds I heard that day. But you don’t have to be a pet-owner to know that killing “nuisance” animals is not the answer. It’s time to do the responsible thing and look at other alternatives. There’s no harm in that, which is more than I can say for snares and traps.
The coyotes were in this particular long before the people there knew about it. As far as coyotes killing pets, I don’t see a coyote taking a pet when it is under the direct control of it owner( on a leash). Feral cats and and dogs kill an extremely high number of native mammal and bird species everywhere. When a cat is let loose outside loose, it can become part of the food chain. Coyotes move into an area to fill a niche in the food chain when there is an opening in it. The people of Wheaton would probably notice a significant increase in the number rodents on their property if the decision was made to destroy the coyotes. Would we start shooting bald eagles if one flew down and ate the Easter bunny? Or if a person sees a domestic cat stalking native song birds should they be allowed to trap and destroy it. I think the residents Wheaton get over it.
