The Hillsboro School District will close Witt Elementary School at the end of this school year.
The move is expected to save the district about $677,000 as it tries to deal with a $2 million deficit.
Hillsboro School Board members voted 6-1 Tuesday to close the school.
With less than 80 students and only six regular classroom teachers, Witt Elementary had become too expensive to operate, according to School Superintendent David Powell.
Students will be bused to schools in Coffeen or Hillsboro.
Powell said no decision has been made regarding the sale of the school, a section of which is 102 years old. Other parts of the building are between 50 and 70 years old.
