Anna Ogrodny, a 24-year-old southwest suburban woman, was formally charged Tuesday with fleeing the scene of a late July crash that left a man dead and his wife seriously injured following a wedding banquet.
Ogrodny, of Burbank, was indicted on one count of failure to report an accident involving death and two counts of failure to report an accident involving injury, Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin said. Arraignment was set for Sept. 3 at the Bridgeview courthouse.
On July 27, she was freed from jail after her family posted 10 percent of a $300,000 bond.
On July 25, Zbigniew “Ziggy” Mak spent the night dancing with friends at the Palos Hills wedding reception for the son of a former co-worker. His night ended in tragic death after a BMW SUV police said was driven by Ogrodny slammed into him and two others.
They said people were leaving Ogrodny’s sister’s wedding — where Ogrodny served as maid of honor — at the Belvedere Chateau at 8055 W. 103rd St. when the SUV plowed backward into Mak and his wife, Anna, wedging him underneath.
It took as many as 15 men to lift the SUV off Mak, 52, of Bridgeview, who was pronounced dead just after 3:15 a.m., police said. Ogrodny turned herself in to police on July 26 and was charged later in the day, police said.
The crash happened about 2:30 a.m. and Ogrodny fled on foot, leaving the SUV at the scene, Deputy Police Chief James Boie said.
Her son Anna Mak suffered a broken leg and hip, and underwent surgery Monday. The third victim suffered only minor injuries.
Police were hampered by language barriers with some of those who witnessed the crash, Boie said. Many only spoke Polish or limited English, he said.
