SPRINGFIELD — Local newspapers are fired up after a measure was introduced Thursday in the House that might make it more difficult for people to find out about major occurrences in their local community.
The proposal allows local governments and school districts to post public notices online, instead of printing them in newspapers. However, smaller notices will still be required, and must include a website address and a location of where to find print notices.
Executive Director of Illinois Press Association Dennis DeRossett, says the measure hurts the people the most.
Some public agencie see the measure as more of a modernization tactic.
Neiber says public notices costs metropolitan counties more than $1 million per year.
Sponsor Frank Mautino expects to gather both sides for a meeting within the next two weeks.
