Oak Park, IL—August 23, 2010—Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple is perhaps the best-kept secret by Chicagoland music lovers.
Despite its low profile, the concert series—an annual program of six concerts presenting artists of local and even international fame—has continued for nearly 40 years. The Unity Temple Concert Series (UTCS) is produced on a tight budget by volunteers passionate about the building and great music.
“I can’t think of a better way for people to experience this fabulous building than during a musical performance,” says UTCS Board President Ray Holdsworth.
Even for the best seats in the house, full series subscription tickets turn out to be less than $23 per concert.
How can they offer such top talent for such low cost?
After all, the 2010-2011 lineup boasts great musical artists, opening with Billboard sensations The Wailin’ Jennys; followed by international award-winning classical guitarist, Denis Azabagic; and closing with the legendary Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, to name a few. “The artists feel honored to perform in such a world-renowned building and enjoy playing to an intimate crowd,” says UTCS Artistic Director Judy Compton.
Additionally, this cherished building—the place Frank Lloyd Wright called his jewel box—needs help.
In 2009 Unity Temple was named one of America’s 11 most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The UTCS Board of Directors hopes that the low cost of tickets will encourage people to add a donation to support the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation. “As a renowned music lover himself, Wright would have appreciated musical performances being a vehicle for the restoration of his masterpiece,” notes Holdsworth.
So after all these years, how has word gotten out? “Our volunteer marketing team is making the most of electronic communications to trumpet the event,” says UTCS Marketing Director Beth Graham. “With increased public awareness and only 350 seats to sell, we encourage music lovers and Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts to subscribe right away.” What more can concertgoers ask for? “Oak Park is also known for its fine restaurants and we’ve partnered with local favorites to offer discounts to concert attendees,” says Graham. The “Dinner and a Concert” program is sure to put the cherry on top of a great evening.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for Unity Temple—designed for optimal acoustics—was as a venue for the arts, as well as worship. The audience experience of the intimate setting is much like a private performance for a select group of friends. Full series subscriptions will be on sale through the first concert, October 8, 2010. The 3-Pick series subscription sales go through February. Individual ticket sales begin September 10.
