City of Chicago to Award $1 Million in Grants to Arts and Cultural Organizations in 2009
Mayor Richard M. Daley announced that the City will award CityArts grants totaling $1,000,000 for the year 2009, providing general operating support for Chicago nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and project support to social service agencies with established arts programs.
City Grants were awarded in amounts ranging in size from $1,000 to $8,000 by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs through the City Arts program to 277 organizations throughout the city representing a variety of artistic disciplines, including theater, dance, visual arts, photography, mixed media, music, and literature.
In announcing the awards, Mayor Richard M. Daley stated, “Arts organizations supported by CityArts grants employ thousands of artists, designers and musicians, all of whom help make Chicago the most vibrant, exciting city in which to live, work and visit.”
Among the CityArts grantees are:
- Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, an organization which seeks to preserve and promote the knowledge and appreciation of contemporary Ukrainian art and culture, located in the West Town community
- Ensemble Español, a dance company which shares the rich traditions of Spain through classical, folkloric and Flamenco styles, in residence at Northeastern Illinois University
- eta Creative Arts Foundation, which preserves and perpetuates the African American aesthetic through theater education and performance, located in Great Grand Crossing
- Chicago Children’s Choir, a multicultural choir housed in the Chicago Cultural Center which seeks to make a difference in the lives of young people through high-quality music education and performance
