Mayor Richard M. Daley today introduced an ordinance to designate land for a new elementary school to be built on the City’s Southeast Side.

The Public Building Commission of Chicago, on behalf of the Chicago Public Schools, will acquire the property at 104th Street and Indianapolis Avenue once the ordinance is passed by the City Council.

“Bringing a new school with state-of-the-art features to the community is another step to assure that our children learn in modern, up-to-date, environments,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley. “This is part of our ongoing effort to give our children the same opportunity for a good education and success in life, regardless of their background or where they live.”

Preliminary plans for the new school expect to follow a prototype design, with the new three-story, steel frame and masonry structure capable of educating students ranging in age from pre-school through eighth grade. The building will include standard classrooms, science and computer laboratories, a music room and an art studio, as well as a library, gymnasium and dining facilities.

The design is targeted to achieve “Silver” level certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
