Bears Notebook: Martz takes blame, Louis limited

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 20107:15 PM

By John MullinCSNChicago.comAny accountability theme that is running through the Bears is being picked up by coaches and at high levels.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz did not blame his quarterback, receivers, offensive line or anyone else for the Bears dismal display of melting under the onslaught of the New York Giants in last Sundays 17-3 loss with its 10 sacks and 110 net yards.

He pointed a thumb, not a finger.

I just feel terrible, Martz said Wednesday. The defense had a great effort in that game. I just tried to do way too much in a short week, with these guys. Theyre not ready for that.

Weve got a bunch of young guys, trying to learn how to play, and we lost our poise, and we got on our heels, and we couldnt do much of anything right. Thats just an old coachs fault right there.

You pin that one right on me.Carolina on his mind

Chris Harris spent three seasons with Carolina after the Bears, safety rich at the time, traded him to the Panthers in 2007. What he sees now as he watches his old team on film is that this is not his old team or an anybodys old team for that matter.

Theyre very young, very young, Harris said. I dont recognized half of the guys on the team now. Theres been a lot of turnover since I left.

The Panthers opened 0-3 last year but have stumbled even more this year with their 0-4 opening and resulting quarterback change to rookie Jimmy Clausen.

I guess hardship comes when youre young and inexperienced. They have some good players, just not experienced, so youre going to have those trials. Im just happy to be 3-1. I had a good time in Carolina, three productive years, so I cant complain.

So when he goes into the Hall of Fame, will it be as a Panther or Bear?

A Bear, Harris declared.

Sick bay

Besides Jay Cutler (concussion), guard Lance Louis (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday. Tackle Chris Williams and safety Major Wright remained out with the hamstring injuries they suffered in the Dallas game.

Carolina will be without wide receiver and Bear nemesis Steve Smith this week. Smith went down with an ankle sprain last weekend and was unable to practice. Also out Wednesday were safety Sherrod Martin (concussion), tackle Jeff Otah (knee) and running back DeAngelo Williams (ill).
