MONACO – The head of European soccer says referees do not need an assist from video technology.
UEFA president Michel Platini insists a system using five officials should be enough to spot a penalty, hand ball or whether the ball crosses the line.
Disputed plays during this year’s World Cup led to worldwide criticism, strengthening calls to bring high-tech methods to soccer.
Platini says the five-official system will prove to be “the only solution.” The system started during last season’s Europa League and will be used during this season’s Champions League.
Platini wants to see how the five-official format works before considering goal-line technology.
