Roller Skating Association member skating centers are encouraging everyone to get out and roller skate this October in celebration of International Roller Skating Month.

Palatine, Ill. — Oct. 1, 2010 — Orbit Skate Center is hosting special events, activities and promotions to promote International Roller Skating Month (I-NRSM).

This October, the Roller Skating Association International (RSA) along with member skating center owners and operators, is promoting roller skating as fun you can feel.

Families, kids and teens continue to recognize roller skating as a fun, healthy activity that anyone can enjoy.

“Roller skating has been a popular fitness activity for decades and the industry is seeing more and more people returning to roller skating centers they have enjoyed in the past,” said Sandra Levin, President “Skating brings friends and family together, and is so affordable for birthday parties, and fitness overall.”

Roller skating is a unique way to achieve health benefits while having fun. The average person can burn 350 calories by skating at a rate of six miles per hour. This number increases to 600 calories if that same person averages 10 miles per hour.

Roller skating has partnered with The President’s Challenge Program as a part of continuing to support active lifestyles. Roller skating is also recommended by the American Heart Association as an aerobic fitness sport.

The President’s Challenge is a program that encourages all Americans to make being active part of their everyday lives. No matter what your activity and fitness level, The President’s Challenge Program can help motivate you to improve.

For more information please visit presidentschallenge.org or call 1-800-258-8146.

The Roller Skating Association International (RSA) is a not-for-profit trade association representing skating center owners and operators, teachers and judges of roller skating, manufacturers and suppliers of roller skating equipment and coaches of artistic skating, roller hockey and speed skating. The association represents more than 750 skating centers internationally.

DEERFIELD, IL – Immediately following passage of the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act of 2010, Democratic Congressional Candidate Dan Seals praised this long-awaited action that will help small businesses get access to credit so they can grow and create jobs.

“I recently met a small business owner who has been profitable for 19 years straight, and his bank would still not extend him a line of credit,” said Seals.

“I applaud the passage of the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act because it directly addresses this very real problem. Small businesses create more than two-thirds of new jobs in our country, so measures that help them hire and grow are critical to our economic recovery.”

Seals has been a longtime supporter of increasing lending to small businesses. His blog post about the measure can be found here: http://10thdistrictfordanseals.com/sure-signs-of-recovery-read-open-for-business/

The legislation would create a $30 billion fund for community banks to help leverage up to $300 billion in loans to small businesses across the country. The bill also provides extensions of expiring small business tax cuts, increases caps on key SBA loans, and eliminates SBA loan fees through the end of the year.

The bill includes additional health insurance write-offs for the self-employed and provisions to roll assets from 401(k) and other retirement accounts into Roth IRAs, where they may be withdrawn tax-free.

Dan Seals is a business consultant and Lecturer at Northwestern University. The Democratic Nominee for Congress in Illinois’ Tenth District, Seals is a former Director at GE Capital and Group Manager at Sprint.

He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and an MA in International Economics from Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife, Mia, are raising their three daughters in Wilmette.

The City of Chicago celebrates the best of today’s international music at the 12th annual World Music Festival this September 21-30, 2010.

The city-wide, multi-venue, week-long festival has attracted over a half million concertgoers and has presented more than 500 artists and ensembles from over 75 countries since it began in 1999.

This 2010 festival includes nearly twice as many artists as previous editions.

Organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), the festival showcases both traditional and contemporary music from diverse cultures across the world.

This year’s events will include performances by Khaïra Arby (Sarahan desert rhythms from Mali), Mahala Rai Banda (high energy gypsy sounds from Romania), Razia Said (a blend of African music and contemporary R&B from Madagascar), Pansori Brecht (a Korean narrative musical inspired by the work of Bertolt Brecht), Rajeev Taranath & Nayan Ghosh (top Indian classical musicians), Oreka TX (Basque masters of the percussion txalaparta), among many others.

Presented at area museums, parks, cultural centers, plazas, theaters, clubs, and other venues, events include a combination of free and low-cost ticketed concerts, many of which are family friendly.

A full schedule of events follows. For more information, artist bios, and music samples, visit WorldMusicFestivalChicago.org. Information is also available at 312.742.1938.

World Music Festival Chicago 2010 opens on Tuesday, September 21, at 6:00 pm, with a free concert at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion featuring Zakir Hussain and special guest sitarist Niladri Kumar.

A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, Zakir Hussain has established himself as a national treasure in India, as well as in the contemporary world music movement. His playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity found while studying under his legendary father, Ustad Alla Rakha, the longtime tabla player for Ravi Shankar.

Hussain has long been a favorite accompanist for India’s greatest classical musicians and dancers, and has performed with artists as diverse as George Harrison, YoYo Ma, Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Shankar, and Mark Morris.

The concert will begin with an Indian classical dance program by leading Bharata Natyam (South Indian classical) dancer Mythili Prakash and Ensemble and is presented as part of India Calling, a three-day festival celebrating the arts and culture of India.

New for World Music Festival Chicago 2010

The three-day India Calling! festival featuring free music concerts, arts exhibitions, cooking demonstrations, dance performances, yoga and meditation classes, and a handicrafts village. These events take place in the Chicago Cultural Center and Millennium Park, from September 21 to the 23.

Chicago Public Schools today marked the traditional first day of classes by opening the first 30 of a projected 80 “College and Career Academies” that represent a comprehensive re-structuring of the CPS Career and Technical Education programs.

“This opening represents a new era in career education at CPS and a big step forward in our plan to coordinate the resources of the city’s job training programs, the public schools and the City Colleges to have the greatest impact on training and retraining our workers for the jobs of the future,” Daley said after the traditional first-day bell-ringing ceremony, held this year Wells Community Academy High School, 936 N. Ashland Av., one of 12 CPS high schools that will house academies this year.

“In today’s economy, it is essential that we graduate students with the skills they need to go directly into a good job and a long term career,” the Mayor said.

The “College and Career Academies” initiative was announced in January and reorganizes 250 non-standardized career programs into 80 academies in 35 high schools over seven years.

For the first time, through the academies, career education will be open to students citywide through an application process.

The academies this year will offer programs in construction, architecture, culinary arts, hospitality, pre-engineering, auto technology and auto body repair, business and finance, medical and health careers, cosmetology, information technology, child care and childhood education, law and public safety, logistics, and broadcast technology.

“For years, we’ve offered career and technical education in the school system, but we needed to strengthen and improve it. This is an exciting day for all Chicago, because we’re doing just that,” Daley said.

This year, some 1,500 students will be enrolled in ninth grade at the 30 new college and career academies. Altogether, some 23,000 students will attend CPS career and technical education programs throughout Chicago.

At Wells — where the career education programs include law and public safety, logistics and teaching — some 250 students are expected to enroll in the academies this year, up from 183 students who took courses under the old career and technical education programs last year, CPS officials said.

The Mayor said that the new academies will focus resources and teaching staff. There will be more courses, more teachers and a rigorous curriculum based on industry standards and demands – all aimed at preparing students to fill the jobs of the future and to keep Chicago competitive in the global economy.

Daley said the Career Academies build on other steps the City has recently announced to keep the progress going at CPS.

For example, two weeks ago Daley and school officials announced a pilot program starting in November that adds 90 minutes of online reading and math learning time to the school day at five elementary schools. Another ten schools will be added when the second semester begins

The program – called “Additional Learning Opportunities” — will add 255 hours of learning time a year for 5,500 students.

Daley also said that to take the schools to the next level and graduate students who are prepared for the jobs of the future, students, teachers and principals must be given all the tools they need to achieve the highest possible levels.

“There’s no better tool than an up-to-date school building that provides a safe and modern environment for learning. This school year, we are opening five new school buildings as part of the Modern Schools Across Chicago program,” he said.

Eleven new schools have been opened in the last two years under this program, which is funded entirely with city money. Since 1996, the City has invested more than $5.5 billion in school capital improvements across the city.

“When you open a new school, you give students and staff a fresh start, greater hope and of course, an improved learning environment. You provide a new anchor for the community,” the Mayor said.

“Years ago we understood the necessity of turning around a public school system that had failed students and taxpayers for decades. Our schools aren’t yet where they need to be. But all of us put our children first, our schools can become the best in America,” he said.

College and Career Academies now operating are:

CHICAGO (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Borrowing by small U.S. businesses in May dropped to its lowest level in seven months, data released by PayNet Inc on Thursday shows, a sign that the nascent recovery may already be faltering.

The Thomson Reuters/Paynet Small Business Lending Index, which measures the overall volume of financing to U.S. small businesses, sank about 5 percent from the prior month on a seasonally adjusted basis, hitting its lowest reading since October. It was the fourth-lowest level on record.

However, compared with a year ago the index was up 9 percent in May, PayNet said.

William Phelan, PayNet’s president and founder, said the numbers suggest the economic recovery has stalled.

“We are in these irons,” he said in an interview, using a sailor’s term for a boat pointed so straight into the wind that its sails flap ineffectively.

“Small business owners are cautious about expanding. They are retaining their capital and they are not interested in going out on a limb at this point because they are uncertain about the future.”

The U.S. government is set to release data on Friday that is expected to show the economy shed 110,000 jobs in June.

President Barack Obama has expressed concern about the pace of jobs growth, and has been pushing for targeted measures to help small businesses invest.

But impending regulatory overhauls in the U.S. healthcare and finance industries are making it difficult for small businesses to gauge what their costs will be in the future, and are holding them back from spending now, Phelan said.

Investment in plants and equipment at small businesses has decreased for most of this year, the index shows.

While that trend in itself does not signal the economy is headed for a so-called double dip recession, it does raise the chances, Phelan said.

“Smaller companies may not have the resources to last in stalled economic times,” Phelan said. “I’d be really cautious that a time like this couldn’t force us into a double dip if this continues.”

In one glimmer of good news for the economic outlook, separate data released by PayNet on Thursday showed that fewer companies are falling behind on their existing loan payments.

Accounts in moderate delinquency, or those behind by 30 days or more, fell in May to 3.36 percent from 3.47 percent in April, PayNet said Tuesday.

Accounts 90 days or more behind in payment, or in severe delinquency, fell to 1.11 percent in May from 1.21 percent.

Accounts behind 180 days or more, or in default and unlikely to ever get paid, fell to 0.91 percent of total receivables in May from 0.94 percent in April, according to PayNet, which provides risk-management tools to the commercial lending industry.

The Thomson Reuters/Paynet small business lending index is correlated to developments in the overall economy, with changes in the index preceding changes in the overall U.S. economy by two to five months.

PayNet collects real-time loan information, such as originations and delinquencies, from more than 200 leading U.S. capital equipment lenders.

WASHINGTON (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Today, Congressman and die-hard Blackhawks fan Mike Quigley (D-IL) announced the House passage of H. Res. 1439, a resolution he introduced immediately after the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship.

The resolution passed overwhelmingly, with only a few dissenting votes from presumable Philadelphia Flyers fans.

Quigley delivered the following remarks on the House floor yesterday in advance of the bill’s consideration:

“About three weeks ago, several hundred brave Chicago Blackhawk hockey fans sat in Philadelphia and wondered why Patrick Kane was flying across the ice in celebration. He scored the goal that no one saw; the goal that brought an end to 49 years of frustration for Blackhawk fans and exorcised the ghost of the demons of Jacques Lemaire in 1971, and he helped make the Chicago Blackhawks the Stanley Cup Champions.

It was a long, extraordinarily tough road for these players. Many of these players competed in over 120 games when you count the Olympics, an extraordinarily grueling task for them to accomplish this.

But that goal set off a celebration that ended with two million people in downtown Chicago in a parade. It set off a celebration in Philadelphia among the few fans that were there from Chicago, and among the alumni of Blackhawks, including Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito, Denis Savard, and many others and unfortunately many alumni who are no longer with us, Hawk legends who are forever in our hearts, such as Keith Magnuson and Pit Martin.

It also set off an extraordinary celebration in Chicago, which for many of us is still going on. There are many people to thank, first of which, as far as I understand the only truly popular owner I know in professional sports – Rocky Wirtz – who combined his full efforts with the dedication to bring a championship to Chicago.

John McDonough, the president of the team, Jay Blunk, Stan Bowman and Scotty Bowman, who were extraordinary in putting this team together and advising it along with Dale Tallon, who’s no longer with the team, but we owe a great deal of gratitude. Defenseman Duncan Keith, the James Norris Memorial Trophy winner this year, Captain Jonathan Toews, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy, and to a team of All-Stars including Brian Campbell as well.

We had several Olympians who also competed. We had players who won the Stanley Cup and the gold medal in one year, which doesn’t happen all the time.

But my main message today is to all those long-suffering dedicated Blackhawk fans who have enjoyed this victory ever since… The fans who understood what it was like to cheer for Pierre Pilote, Denis Savard, and Tony Esposito and all the years in which we didn’t quite make it to the playoffs but they loved the Madhouse on Madison as much as I did, and I look forward to many more years of excitement for this team that Mr. Wirtz has brought us.

So I yield back now, but it was a wonderful night, and we appreciate your co-sponsorships.”

Video of the above speech is available here.

The text of the resolution is as follows:

“CONGRATULATING THE CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS ON WINNING THE 2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

Whereas the historic Chicago Blackhawks, as one of the `Original Six’, have made countless contributions to sports;

Whereas the Blackhawks and the National Hockey League have demonstrated a commitment to promoting fitness and leadership skills for youth through support for youth hockey programs and community skating facilities;

Whereas with 101 straight home game sellouts, and an NHL leading regular-season average attendance of 21,356, the Blackhawks are the pride of their hometown, Chicago, Illinois;

Whereas in just 3 years, the Blackhawks organization of Rocky Wirtz, Joel Quenneville, John McDonough, Stan Bowman, Scotty Bowman, Jay Blunk, and Dale Tallon have revitalized a franchise and reminded Chicago that it has always been a hockey town;

Whereas the Chicago Blackhawks, through amazing offense, superb defense, and unmatched depth, dominated the regular season and won 52 games;

Whereas the Blackhawks defeated the Nashville Predators in 6 games, the Vancouver Canucks in 6 games, and swept the number 1 seeded San Jose Sharks to become the Western Conference Champions and advance to the Stanley Cup Final;

Whereas in the Stanley Cup Final series, the Blackhawks held off the aggressive play and talent of the Eastern Conference Champion Philadelphia Flyers, who deserve great credit, to win in overtime, and provide one of the most exciting final series in recent history; and

Whereas the innumerable contributions from every player, coach, and the entire Blackhawks family have ended the 49-year-long championship drought and brought the roar back to Madison Street and Lord Stanley’s Cup to where it belongs, sweet home Chicago: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

recognizes the Chicago Blackhawks for their long distinguished history, countless contributions to sports, and their many successes as a franchise;

congratulates the Blackhawks on an amazing season and for winning the 2010 Stanley Cup Championship;

recognizes the players, coaches, and leadership of the Blackhawks organization; and

joins with all people in the United States and hockey fans all over the world in celebrating the return of the Stanley Cup to Chicago, Illinois.

After watching the Blackhawks prevail in Philadelphia in Game 6 of the finals and getting to hoist the Stanley Cup himself, Quigley delivered a speech on the House floor the next morning. A photo of Rep. Quigley with the Cup is available here.

Last fall, when Quigley enumerated the Top Ten Reasons to love Chicago, he closed his speech by saying, “I look forward to coming back next summer with Chicago’s Stanley Cup.”

Quigley still plays hockey regularly in Chicago and Washington. He recently played in a charity game at the United Center against the Blackhawks alumni, as well as a “Lawmakers vs. Lobbyists” match-up in Washington.

He is a co-chair of the Congressional Hockey Caucus, a bipartisan group dedicated to combating childhood obesity while promoting exercise, teamwork, discipline, and commitment through hockey. He has been a lifelong Chicago Blackhawks fan.

Normal, Ill. (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — America’s most beautiful Corvette show — Bloomington Gold® Corvettes USA is only weeks away.

As the longest running continuous Corvette show since 1973 and where one can see thousands of Corvettes in one place, Bloomington Gold has set the standard by which all other Corvette events are measured.

2010 Bloomington Gold takes place June 24-27 at Pheasant Run Resort 4051 E. Main St. in St. Charles, Illinois.

There will be more new and used Corvettes for sale at this event than anywhere else in the world! Eight Corvette dealers will be there with hundreds of new and used Corvettes. In addition, Corvettes for sale by owner will be in the cars for sale lot and Mecum Auction will auction hundreds of Corvettes on Friday and Saturday.

This will also be the first opportunity to see the new 2011 Z07 Corvette, one of 500 to be made!

“We really have something for everyone,” David Burroughs, CEO of Bloomington Gold comments.

Bloomington Gold is known world-wide for leadership in Corvette preservation and authenticity. Its revolutionary judging system – Gold Certification®, SURVIVOR® and BENCHMARK® – is the measurement by which collectors, auctions, magazines and parts manufacturers compare all other Corvettes.

In addition to judging, Bloomington Gold offers educational seminars, auction and other Corvettes for sale, vendors and swap meet. New for 2010 is The Great Hall which will celebrate 10 people and 10 cars that have helped shape the Corvette phenomenon.

Also in 2010, 75 of the best historically preserved originals of all make and model cars will be judged for the 3rd Annual SURVIVOR collector Car event. All vying for the coveted ZZenith® award, these cars display the finger prints of their histories and the owners who have cared for them.

Set against the lush, tree lined fairways of Pheasant Run Resort’s 18 hole championship golf course, Bloomington Gold showcases thousands of Corvettes.

“Bloomington Gold offers attendees access to the highest concentration of America’s coolest, not to mention most expensive, Corvettes found in one place,” Burroughs concludes.

High School Students Compete for College Scholarship Money

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — The Coordinating Committee of the National Leaders of Tomorrow® (NLOT) Case Competition announced today that high school teams representing more than 23 cities from across the country will compete in the 9th annual Business Case Competition.

The competition will be held June 25-27, 2010 at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The Leaders of Tomorrow® is an initiative of the National Black MBA Association, a Chicago-based professional organization that is dedicated to the creation of educational opportunities and economic growth for African Americans.

The competition challenges at-risk high school students –many of them minorities– to analyze a graduate level business case and present recommendations to judges from corporate America’s executive suites and academia before an audience of several hundred people.

During the months leading up to the competition, students are coached aggressively in analysis, forecasting, decision-making, research, financial modeling and marketing by members of the National Black MBA Association, Inc. Winning teams receive thousands of dollars in scholarship money for college. Since its inception, the competition has awarded more than $65,000 to dozens of students.

“The only way to ensure that America remains competitive is to ensure that tomorrow’s workforce is competent, aggressive and diverse,” said William Wells Jr., chairman of the National Black MBA

Association, Inc., Board of Directors. “I can’t think of another program in the nation that pushes minority students to meet such a high level of expectation. For nine years participants in this competition have proven that no matter their socio-economic background, any student can achieve academic excellence if given the right encouragement, coaching and resources. I am extremely proud of our chapters for consistently providing the right mix of mentoring and tough love that has shown these aspiring young professionals that they can accomplish anything.”

The Business Case Competition is presented by Exxon Mobil Corporation and the National Black MBA Foundation, with major sponsorship provided by Nationwide Insurance, and Nova Southeastern University. The program is produced and managed as a collective effort of National Black MBA Association, Inc., Chapters nationwide.

“ExxonMobil is proud to return as presenting sponsor of the 9th Annual NBMBAA Leaders of Tomorrow Business Case Competition and its efforts to honor and promote our next generation of leaders from the African American community,” said Robert Lanyon, manager, corporate citizenship and community investment, Exxon Mobil Corporation. “We congratulate the students for their outstanding accomplishments. The analytical and problem-solving skills students acquire by participating in this competition are seeds that will grow into careers as the entrepreneurs, CEOs, engineers, scientists, and businesspeople that will determine our long-term economic progress.”

“Nationwide understands the importance of exposing our young leaders to opportunities such as the Business Case Competition and the rigor that is involved in preparing students for this experience,” said Kathryne Reeves, vice-president, Nationwide Insurance. We know that exposure matters and this is a tangible example of making a difference in the lives of young people that can play a pivotal role in their career decisions and lifelong success. “We applaud the National Black MBA Association for its commitment to fostering excellence, pride and accomplishment among minority youth.”

Competing teams of four (and one alternate) are given a business case used internationally in MBA programs, and challenged to present related strategies and recommendations with the same proficiency as an MBA candidate would be required to demonstrate. Students use common business school tools such as SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) and Porter’s Five Forces analyses, as well as other instruments to determine opportunities for companies profiled in the case. They are then required to present a detailed strategy to capitalize on the opportunity that includes financial projections, implementation plans, timetables, exploration of risks and an industry impact. Students are evaluated based on their understanding of the marketplace, feasibility and effectiveness of their recommendations, creativity, and the quality of their presentation.

“By investing in the excellence of youth, we are ensuring that participants in the LOT Business Case Competition start early in their educational development,” said William Qualls, chair, Board of Trustees, National Black MBA Association Foundation. “In addition to the knowledge they gain from the case study, students are developing a unique skill set of problem solving, persuasive arguments, and presentation skills.

CHICAGO — (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Golden Apple, a leader in advancing the teaching profession in Illinois for 25 years, is pleased to announce the 10 recipients of the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

The honorees, all high school teachers, were selected from a pool of 562 nominees. (The complete list of 2010 Golden Apple teachers can be found at the end of this release.)

Golden Apple has recognized outstanding Chicago-area educators annually since 1986. The creation of Golden Apple founders Mike and Pat Koldyke, the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching recognize and honor outstanding teachers for their contributions to building a stronger, better-educated citizenry.

Each Golden Apple Award recipient receives a tuition-free, six-month sabbatical to study at Northwestern University. Each winner also receives a $3,000 cash award. Perhaps most importantly, Golden Apple teachers become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, providing a stronger voice and a larger stage from which to make an impact, through ongoing professional development and engagement in education reform, such as the mentoring of future teachers through Golden Apple’s Scholars program.

“Every year we have an amazing group of recipients and this year’s teachers are no different,” said Golden Apple President and CEO Dominic Belmonte. “We believe teachers should have the opportunity to develop their ideas and a forum to share their thoughts on improving education. We’re proud to have achieved 25 years of providing such important resources and recognition to our best educators.”

The recipients of the 2010 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching will be honored at a black-tie event on Friday, October 15, at WTTW/Channel 11 Studios in Chicago. WTTW will also broadcast the awards in a one-hour television program following the event.

Golden Apple accepts nominations for the Awards each fall. Anyone may nominate an eligible teacher but teachers may not nominate themselves. Eligible teachers must be full-time classroom teachers at public or non-public schools in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, or Will counties and be committed to continue teaching in Illinois for at least two subsequent years. Awards focus on a rotating group of grade levels (Pre-K – 3, 4 – 8, and 9 – 12). In 2010, high school teachers are the focus of the Awards.

Distinguished retired teachers, college/university professors, administrators, and former Golden Apple Award winners serve on Golden Apple’s selection committee. Committee members apply research-based professional standards to identify teachers who exemplify the highest standards and practices of the teaching profession. The selection process includes classroom observations of all Award finalists and interviews with colleagues, supervisors, students, and parents.

Golden Apple Academy members have directly helped more than 5,000 Illinois teachers to become more effective in the classroom and indirectly helped tens of thousands of others.

Additionally, half a million Illinois children have been positively impacted by the Golden Apple Scholars who have become teachers in Illinois since 1993 through advanced teacher preparation and mentoring by Academy members. The 250 currently active Academy members have more than 2,000 collective years of teaching experience.

About Golden Apple

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Golden Apple began with founders Mike and Pat Koldyke and a shared inspiration — to offer outstanding schoolteachers a level of recognition and engagement in the larger work of education reform.

Golden Apple’s successful track record of integrated, innovative programs and resources enhance the quality, resiliency, and creativity of classroom teachers and improve teaching and learning throughout Illinois. Qualified, passionate educators — including Golden Apple Award-winners and finalists — lead a small staff of dedicated employees with functional and program expertise.

A connected and committed board of directors oversees Golden Apple’s strategic direction. Together with a larger community of expert educators, this nonprofit organization works to ensure that all Illinois children have the excellent teachers they deserve.

CHICAGO (CBS) – Chicago is celebrating its 173rd birthday today.

Needless to say, the city looked a little different when it was first incorporated in1837.

We all know Chicago as the third largest city in the country, with a population estimated at more than 2.8 million in 2007.

But in 1837, the city had a mere 4,170 inhabitants, only a small fraction of most Chicago suburbs today.

But that was a huge jump from when Chicago was incorporated as a town in 1833. Back then, there were only about 350 settlers – not enough even to fill a single downtown high-rise condo building.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office says when Chicago was incorporated in 1837, there were 29 dry goods stores, five hardware stores, 45 grocery and provision establishments, 19 attorney’s offices, and 10 taverns.

These days, there are more than 10 taverns on just one block of Division Street between Dearborn and State streets. But there aren’t too many places at all that classify themselves as “dry goods stores” or “grocery and provision establishments.”

And we all know there’s nothing that divides the city like the Cubs-White Sox rivalry, right? Well, if you wanted to go to the sites of present-day Wrigley Field or U.S. Cellular Field, you might have had to blaze a trail and fight off a wild animal or two.

The city’s boundaries in 1837 extended only to North Avenue on the north, 22nd Street (now Cermak Road) on the south, Wood Street on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east.

If you ventured south, a UIC project tells us, you would have found some people down by present-day U.S. Cellular Field.

Excavation had begun a year earlier for the Illinois & Michigan Canal, and what had been a fur-trading settlement known as Hardscrabble was gradually being transformed into a community called Bridgeport.

But you probably would have gotten lost in what we now know as Wrigleyville. It was a wooded wilderness that received its first European settler – Swiss immigrant Conrad Sulzer – also in 1837. The only trails that led out of the wilderness were present-day Lincoln and Clark streets, a historical narrative from the Central Lakeview Merchants Association recounts.

And there’s another reason why being a Cubs or Sox fan would have been a moot point. The modern game of baseball hadn’t been invented yet in 1837.

But if you just stayed downtown, at least you wouldn’t have gotten lost. By and large, the downtown streets had the same name.

In fact, the first city hall was at the southeast corner of State and Lake streets, just a few blocks from the present one. But it wasn’t called City Hall. According to the Chicago History Journal, it was called “The Saloon.”

But despite its name, “The Saloon” apparently wasn’t as seedy as it sounded. The Chicago History Journal quotes Chicago historian Alfred Theodore Andreas (1839-1900): “(The Saloon was) devoted to public entertainments of various kinds, political and religious meetings, concerts, traveling shows ,etc. The name of this hall would, to the casual reader, appear to connect it with a house of no very good repute; but such an impression would be erroneous.”

At the time, Andreas writes, a Saloon was more like a French salon. It also happened to be the venue some of the city’s leaders used to procure a charter.

But suppose you did want to go to an actual saloon – there were 10 of them, remember? Or maybe you would have wanted to stay home and make a nice dinner for yourself. Well, you’d need some money, but not much.

Here are some typical the prices quoted in a document from Chicago’s 85th anniversary celebration in 1922:

Butter: 6 cents per pound

Venison: $1.50 per carcass

Beef: 6 cents per pounds

Flour: $3 per barrel

Ham: 5 cents a pound

Quail: 3 cents each.

Quite the bargain, eh?

And what if you wanted to keep up with the news? Your options would have been limited, and you probably would have had to accept media bias.

Chicago’s first newspaper was the Weekly Democrat, which was founded in 1833, and by the time of the city’s incorporation was owned by a local politician named “Long John” Wentworth.

Yes, indeed, things have changed since 1837. And if you want to celebrate all the leaps and bound our fair city has made since then, and you missed the Chicago History Museum celebration earlier in the day, Forgotten Chicago is hosting a 173rd birthday party and silent auction for the city at 8 p.m.

It will be held at Cunneen’s Pub, at 1424 W. Devon Ave. in Rogers Park, which, in case you were wondering, was in the middle of the woods in 1837.

Chicagoans felt as if the worst of another hard winter was finally over when last Friday dawned sunny and mild and single-game tickets to 2010 Cubs games went on sale.

Pitchers and catchers had reported to Arizona for spring training earlier in the week, and a game-day-like sense of anticipation boosted the spirits of fans standing patiently in lines at Wrigley Field.

Tom Ricketts, the Cubs’ new owner, contributed to the cheerful ambience, arriving at the park before 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts and chatting up the customers as they awaited an opportunity to buy seats that cost, on average, 10 percent more than last year.

Ricketts’s amiable presence seemed to offset any grumbling over higher prices for a disappointing team — no one in line could recall anyone from the Tribune Company, the Cubs’ corporate, faceless former owner, showing up with refreshments for the masses.

Neither could anyone recall the previous owner offering a pricey presale enticement that provided access to the most desirable games and — for ticket buyers willing to pay 20 percent more than face value and then “save” 5 percent by using a certain credit card — eliminated the need to stand in line.

Friday’s buyers found most of the seats for the games with the White Sox, Cardinals and Brewers gone in the online presale, which ended Thursday and which provoked some grumbling and underscored a major challenge facing the Ricketts family: How do you maximize Wrigley Field revenues without alienating a restless fan base that would like some emotional return on its financial investment before it is tapped out?

Based on last week’s sales and on recent history, the Cubs expect to draw three million fans for the seventh straight season. Their ticket prices remain third highest in baseball behind the Yankees and the Red Sox, who can justify the cost — between them they have won 7 of the last 14 World Series.

The Cubs, as we know, have not won a World Series in 101 years or played in one in 65. Yet the team keeps asking its fans to invest in hope and dig deeper while they are stretched to cover the necessities of real life.

Ricketts, a Cubs fan long before he was an owner, said that his own ticket-buying experience involved plying his brother with beer and pizza to get him to stand in line for bleacher seats. But as the sons of a billionaire, they never had to sweat the cost.

He has said all the right things about respecting Cubs history and tradition and honoring the almost sacred trust. He hears from fans who wistfully recall when they were 8 years old, attending their first game with their grandfathers, mesmerized by the lush green setting and the majestic scoreboard and getting hooked on the Cubs forever.

Ricketts understands that the ballpark experience is essential to cultivating loyalty. But beer and sunshine and socializing are no longer enough — not at these prices. For all their success at the gate, the Cubs are chronic underachievers on the field, and it’s no longer cute or funny. Not at these prices.

Marc Whitney, 44, is a Chicago native, a lifelong Cubs fan who indulged his youthful passion by working as an Andy Frain usher at Wrigley Field and seeing 40-plus games a year.

Now living in Milwaukee, he is trying to raise his son in the religion and has been making two or three Cubs trips a year. But, after paying $215.67 online for three right-field-corner, upper-deck box seats to a Friday afternoon game against the Phillies in July, the Whitney family will be making only one Wrigley trip this year.

The face value of those tickets is $156; the additional cost comes from taxes and the “convenience fee” the Cubs charged in the pre-sale.

Similar seats would also cost $156 at a Fenway Park ticket booth, and no wonder — the Red Sox are the Ricketts’s role model for their baseball business.

There are similarities between the Cubs and the Red Sox, beginning with their cozy, neighborhood ballparks, each a shrine-like attraction unto itself as a symbol of history, of baseball as it was meant to be played.

There are also significant differences, beginning with on-field performance. The Red Sox have been to the playoffs in seven of the last eight years and won the World Series in 2004 and 2007.

The Cubs are poster guys for baseball futility, with a 1-6 record in postseason series since their last pennant in 1945 and with a nine-game playoff losing streak.

And they have a thriving, less expensive rival just eight miles to the south that would be primed to steal market share if baseball loyalty weren’t so deeply ingrained in Chicago.

“This has always mystified me: The White Sox play in a newer, nicer park with better amenities, more parking and frequently a better team,” said Marc Ganis, a sports marketing consultant.

“Yet they draw, on average, 40 percent fewer fans. That’s the power of Wrigley Field.”

That power comes at an increasingly steep price. Maybe too steep.
