CHICAGO, Nov. 7, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — United Continental Holdings (NYSE: UAL) announced that its subsidiary Continental Airlines today is operating the first U.S. commercial flight powered by advanced biofuels. Flight 1403, a Boeing 737-800, departs Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport at 10:30 a.m. for Chicago O’Hare International Airport, making United the first U.S. airline to fly passengers using a blend of sustainable, advanced biofuel and traditional petroleum-derived jet fuel.

“United is taking a significant step forward to advance the use of environmentally responsible and cost-efficient alternative fuels,” said Pete McDonald, United’s executive vice president and chief operations officer. “Sustainable biofuels, produced on a large scale at an economically viable price, can one day play a meaningful role in powering everyone’s trip on an airline.”

Today’s flight demonstrates United’s commitment to sustainable biofuels and making progress toward enhancing energy security, diversity of our fuel supply and a reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.

“Today, roughly four months since the approval of hydroprocessed renewable fuels in commercial aviation, we are excited to see the deployment of these fuels on a domestic U.S. flight,” said Air Transport Association of America (ATA) Vice President and Chief Economist John Heimlich. “ATA member airlines continue to demonstrate leadership in fostering new and environmentally preferred sources of energy to transport people and goods throughout the globe.”

Powered by the World’s First 100 Percent Algae-Derived Jet Fuel

Solazyme, working with Honeywell’s UOP process technology, developed the algae oil that was refined into jet fuel to power today’s commercial flight. Solazyme produced the world’s first 100 percent algae-derived jet fuel for both commercial and military applications.

Also today, United is announcing it has signed a letter of intent with Solazyme to negotiate the purchase of 20 million gallons of jet fuel per year, derived exclusively from algae oil, for delivery as early as 2014. Solazyme, headquartered in south San Francisco, manufactured the algae oil used on today’s flight through its proprietary fermentation process. The end product was then refined outside Houston using renewable jet fuel processing technology from Honeywell’s UOP.

“Looking at United, a company that understands the sustainability of tomorrow means environmental responsibility today, we see a true pioneer in the future of flight,” said Jonathan Wolfson, Solazyme’s CEO. “Solazyme is deeply committed to commercializing our renewable oil production technology, and we’re excited to be partnering with United on the first U.S. commercial biofuel flight.”

Underscoring Eco-Skies, United’s Commitment to the Environment

Operating the first U.S. revenue advanced biofuel flight represents a major milestone in Eco-Skies, United’s commitment to leading commercial aviation as an environmentally responsible company by taking actions today that shape an environmentally sustainable future. Eco-Skies builds upon United and Continental’s solid track record for improving aircraft fuel efficiency and introducing sustainability programs.

Continental in 2009 made history as the first North American carrier to perform a two-engine aircraft flight demonstration using sustainable biofuels derived from algae and jatropha. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft used in that demonstration, tail number 516, is the same aircraft operating today’s flight. In 2010 United conducted the first flight by a U.S. commercial airline using synthetic fuel made from natural gas.

“Advancing a greener, more diverse fuel supply for the future is a top priority for United,” said Jimmy Samartzis, United’s managing director of global environmental affairs and sustainability. “Our environmental actions and commitment extend beyond that — we are reducing our impact on the environment in the air and on the ground with our business partners and across our communities.”

Accomplishments include:

The company improved fuel efficiency by more than 32 percent since 1994 by investing in a modern, fuel-efficient fleet and by streamlining its operating procedures. New fuel-efficient aircraft on order, 132 in total for delivery through 2019, include 50 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 25 Airbus 350s, which are 20 percent more fuel efficient than the older aircraft they will replace. United continues to modify existing aircraft with winglets, improving fuel efficiency by up to five percent.

United and Continental operate more than 3,600 alternatively fueled or zero-emission ground service equipment vehicles.

Whenever possible, pilots use innovative flight processes such as continuous descent or tailored arrivals, use only one engine while taxiing and ground power instead of aircraft engines when at the gate, and the airline often uses ground equipment instead of aircraft engines to move aircraft from gate to gate.

During the last five years the company recycled more than 20 million pounds of aluminum cans, plastic and paper items from waste generated in-flight and in our facilities.

Advancements in technology, such as paperless flight decks with iPads for pilots and paperless boarding with mobile devices for customers, further reduce environmental impact.

How Biofuel Differs from Traditional Jet Fuel

Ensuring safe aviation use, the biofuel used on today’s flight meets the ASTM International specification for bio-derived aviation fuels, approved in July 2011 and referred to as “Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids” (HEFA) fuel. HEFA fuels underwent rigorous testing and review by engine and airframe manufacturers, the U.S. military, the FAA and airlines. Solajet™, powering this United flight, met the certification requirements established by the ASTM and approved by the FAA. The biofuel delivers fuel safety and operational characteristics that are identical to conventional jet fuel — but cleaner. These advanced biofuels are drop-in replacements for petroleum-based fuel, requiring no modification to factory-standard engines or aircraft. The pilots operating the aircraft fly the plane in exactly the same way they do when flying an aircraft powered only by traditional jet fuel. Passengers on the flight will not see, feel or hear any difference in the aircraft.

Solajet™ is derived from Solazyme’s tailored oil production process using microbial algae that grow in fermenters by feeding on sugars from plants that have already harnessed the sun’s energy. Solazyme’s technology is biomass feedstock flexible and can be tailored to achieve customer needs in geographies throughout the world, allowing it to achieve cost parity, commercial scale and lifecycle environmental impact reduction.

- Elevates AAR’s position as a commercial aerospace Tier-1 supplier

- Positions the Company to capitalize on new commercial aircraft build cycles

- Immediately accretive to earnings and margins

WOOD DALE, Ill., Oct. 21, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — AAR CORP. (NYSE: AIR) announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to purchase Telair International GmbH (Telair) and Nordisk Aviation Products, AS (Nordisk) from Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX). The acquisition significantly adds to AAR’s commercial manufacturing business and greatly enhances the Company’s ability to capitalize on commercial aircraft build cycles as a Tier-1 supplier to Airbus and Boeing.

Telair is a leader in the design, manufacture and support of cargo loading systems for wide-body and narrow-body aircraft with established positions on the world’s most popular current and next-generation passenger and freighter models. Telair provides standard container-based systems for Airbus A330/340 aircraft types, as well as the future Airbus A350 and recently launched Boeing 747-800. In addition, the business manufactures systems and components for the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families of aircraft, and for converted Boeing 767-300s and 747-400s. Approximately 40% of Telair’s revenue is generated from aftermarket spares and support for its installed base of cargo systems. Telair operates from facilities in Germany, Sweden and Singapore. Nordisk designs and manufactures heavy-duty pallets and lightweight cargo containers for commercial airlines from facilities in Norway and China and also has a strong aftermarket position.

“The acquisition strengthens AAR’s standing as a leading provider of Cargo Loading Systems to the global aerospace market,” said David P. Storch, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AAR CORP. ”Telair’s position as a leading provider to the commercial market is an excellent complement to AAR’s leadership position serving the military market. Telair systems are installed on more than 4,000 aircraft currently operating around the world, representing a significant aftermarket opportunity for the Company. We are very impressed with the operating teams at Telair and Nordisk and look forward to working closely with them to grow these businesses.”

The purchase price of the acquisition is $280 million, which will be initially funded through the Company’s existing revolving credit facility. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed before the end of the calendar year. After closing, the Company will update its revised guidance for fiscal year 2012, which was provided on October 5, 2011 at the Company’s Investor Day conference.

The transaction is expected to generate, on a full-year basis in fiscal year 2013, more than $225 million of revenue, be immediately accretive to margins and result in earnings accretion between $0.20 and $0.25 per diluted share, based on initial estimates of purchase accounting adjustments and excluding synergies resulting from the acquisition.

The businesses will operate as part of AAR’s Structures and Systems segment. The combination of Telair and AAR Cargo Systems creates a formidable market leader in the design, production and servicing of aircraft cargo systems for both commercial and military platforms. Following the integration of these businesses, the Company expects to achieve significant operational synergies, leading to further margin improvements and accretion.

Acquisition Conference Call

AAR will hold a conference call to provide additional information for investors regarding the acquisition on Monday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. CDT. The conference call can be accessed by calling 866-219-5268 from inside the U.S. or 703-639-1120 from outside the U.S. A replay of the conference call will also be available through Monday, October 31 by calling 888-266-2081 from inside the U.S. or 703-925-2533 from outside the U.S. (access code: 1556354).

AAR is a leading provider of products and value-added services to the worldwide aerospace and government and defense industries. With facilities and sales locations around the world, AAR uses its close-to-the-customer business model to serve customers through four operating segments: Aviation Supply Chain; Government and Defense Services; Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul; and Structures and Systems. More information can be found at www.aarcorp.com.

MASCOUTAH, Ill. – Chicago-based Boeing Co. says it plans to open a manufacturing facility at a long-struggling airport in southwestern Illinois.

In a news release Thursday, Boeing says it will lease space at MidAmerica Airport for assembly work and that the facility will initially employ 75 people. Officials at a ceremony at the airport suggested there would be more.

This will be Boeing’s first manufacturing facility in Illinois. The company has 16,000 employees in nearby St. Louis.

The airport near Mascoutah (muh-SKOO’-tuh) has struggled to attract and keep businesses and air carriers. It also has never turned a profit.

The airport has focused on cargo traffic since losing its last passenger flights in 2008.

CHICAGO, Aug. 19 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — President’s Export Council Chairman Jim McNerney and Vice Chairman Ursula Burns today announced the subcommittees for the newly established group, which is tasked with providing President Barack Obama advice on ways to enhance U.S. competitiveness and fuel job growth by doubling exports in five years.

McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and CEO, said ideas for the council structure and its initial focus areas came from the members appointed by the president on July 7. “We constructed this council to guide and focus our initial efforts on this national imperative. We have an aggressive plan that addresses a wide range of job-creating export opportunities, from expanding free and fair trade agreements, to increasing tourism to the United States, to retraining our returning veterans in needed work skills,” McNerney said.

“Our estimate is that these first initiatives, if fully implemented, could take a significant step forward toward the goal of doubling exports in five years,” said Burns, chairman and chief executive officer of Xerox.

McNerney and Burns plan to structure the Export Council into five subcommittees:

Small and Medium Sized Business Engagement

Export Promotion and Advocacy

Global Competitiveness

Manufacturing, Services and Agriculture

Workforce Readiness

The Export Council’s first official meeting is scheduled for September 16th.

The council is focused on working with the administration to double exports in five years by pushing free and fair trade agreements through Congress, implementing export control reforms, examining business visa policies, implementing bilateral and multilateral enforcement of intellectual property rights and establishing public-private partnership using U.S. embassies abroad to promote the United States as a tourism destination.

These measures plus others — increasing Ex-Im Bank lending; increasing the number of commercial officers overseas; and working with the departments of Veterans Affairs, Education and Labor to offer returning veterans skills training in high-demand job areas focused on science, technology, engineering and math — will help reinvigorate U.S. innovation and drive exports, which will enhance U.S. competitiveness and sustain U.S. jobs.

The President’s Export Council is the principal national advisory committee on international trade. The council advises the president of government policies and programs that affect U.S. trade performance; promotes export expansion; and provides a forum for discussing and resolving trade-related problems among the business, industrial, agricultural, labor, and government sectors.

There are currently 20 private-sector members of the council who serve with five senators and five congressmen appointed by their respective leadership in addition to the Secretaries of Commerce, Agriculture, Energy, Homeland Security, Labor, State, and Treasury; the Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; the U.S. Trade Representative; and the Administrator of the Small Business Administration.

This signifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency.

“Boeing is pleased to accept EPA’s ENERGY STAR in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said James Bell, executive vice president, corporate president and chief financial officer. “Boeing is dedicated to being an industry leader committed to environmental stewardship and recognizes its responsibility to create a better, sustainable future for all stakeholders and the communities in which we work and live.”

Improvements to the Chicago building’s automation and lighting systems and increased awareness helped to improve the building’s environmental performance by reducing energy consumption and costs. Two other Boeing facilities have received the ENERGY STAR; the Bay Area Boulevard building in Houston in 2008 and the Douglas Center in Long Beach, Calif., in 2009.

Participation as an ENERGY STAR Industrial Partner has been a key factor in Boeing’s energy-management improvements. Boeing has been an Industrial Partner with ENERGY STAR since 1997. Since 2002, on a revenue-adjusted basis, Boeing has reduced CO2 emissions by 31 percent and energy consumption by 32 percent at major U.S. facilities.

Commercial buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s buildings is critical to protecting our environment,” said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch. “From the boiler room to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their buildings more efficient and earning EPA’s ENERGY STAR.”

ENERGY STAR was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 different kinds of products, new homes, and commercial and industrial buildings. Products and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved nearly $17 billion on their energy bills while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 30 million vehicles. For more information about ENERGY STAR visit www.energystar.gov/buildings.

LOUIS, July 14 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA – News) today announced that Illinois will benefit from an estimated 1,100 total jobs and generate an estimated $57 million in annual economic impact if the Boeing NewGen Tanker is selected as the U.S. Air Force’s next aerial refueling aircraft.

Boeing submitted its proposal July 9 to replace 179 of the 400 Eisenhower-era KC-135 aircraft. The Air Force is expected to award a contract in November.

“Boeing’s NewGen Tanker would support more than 200 jobs at Hamilton Sundstrand in Rockford and in the surrounding communities, bringing $11 million in economic impact to the region each year,” said U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo. “Boeing is in great position to win this competition and build the Air Force’s next-generation refueling tanker, putting more Americans back to work in northern Illinois and throughout the country.”

“I have been a strong supporter of Boeing building the new tanker, precisely because it will mean good paying jobs right here in Illinois,” said U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello. “This fact is even more important as we continue to deal with the effects of the economic downturn. Boeing has a tremendous economic impact on our state, and I look forward to this process moving toward completion.”

Illinois manufacturers ready to produce critical components on the NewGen Tanker include:

Elecsys Division of DCX Chol, Pekin

Hamilton Sundstrand, Rockford

Northrop Grumman, Rolling Meadows

Rexnord, Downers Grove

Scot, Downers Grove

SKF Aerospace Sealing Solution, Elgin

Woodward MPC, Skokie.

Currently, Boeing has more than 600 employees in Illinois and works with nearly 850 suppliers/vendors, delivering a total $714 million in annual economic impact.

The NewGen Tanker is a widebody, multi-mission aircraft based on the proven Boeing 767 commercial airplane and updated with the latest and most advanced technology. Capable of fulfilling the Air Force’s needs for transport of fuel, cargo, passengers and patients, the combat-ready NewGen Tanker will meet or exceed the 372 mandatory requirements described in the service’s final KC-X Request for Proposal released Feb. 24.

The NewGen Tanker will be made with a low-risk approach to manufacturing that relies on existing Boeing facilities in Washington state and Kansas as well as U.S. suppliers throughout the nation, with decades of experience delivering dependable military tanker and derivative aircraft. Nationwide, the NewGen Tanker program will support approximately 50,000 total U.S. jobs with Boeing and more than 800 suppliers in more than 40 states.

The Boeing NewGen Tanker also will be more cost-effective to own and operate than a larger, heavier tanker. It will save American taxpayers more than $10 billion in fuel costs over its 40-year service life because it burns 24 percent less fuel than the competitor’s airplane.

Boeing has been designing, building, modifying and supporting tankers for decades. These include the KC-135 that will be replaced in the KC-X competition, and the KC-10 fleet. The company also has delivered four KC-767Js to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and is on contract to deliver four KC-767As to the Italian Air Force.

WASHINGTON – Airlines will have to inspect the cockpit window heaters on 1,212 Boeing airliners and perhaps replace the windows under a safety order the Federal Aviation Administration said Friday it plans to issue next week.

The window heaters have been tied to dozens of incidents involving in-flight fires, smoke, open streams of electricity known as electrical arcing, and shattered windshields in Boeing planes. In many cases, pilots have made emergency landings.

The source of the problem was identified in 2004 as a simple loose screw that chafes power wires where they connect to heating wires in the windows.

The most recent incident was an emergency landing by a United Airlines Boeing 757 at Dulles International Airport in Virginia on May 16. A fire broke out near the captain’s side of the window during the New York-to-Los Angeles flight. Pilots used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, but they had to send for a second extinguisher after the fire reignited. The fire also shattered part of the window. Afterward, passengers said smoke had drifted from the cockpit into the cabin, and fire trucks, ambulances and other rescue equipment was waiting for the plane when it landed.

NTSB has been prodding FAA since 2004 to order airlines to replace cockpit windows on Boeing models in which incidents have occurred with a new window design that uses pins instead of screws. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman told The CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM last month that she was concerned the problem would lead to an accident.

The safety order, which FAA said will be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, applies to some Boeing 757, 767 and 777 models. NTSB had urged that 747 planes also be included. FAA said it is considering a separate order for 747s, but didn’t indicate when that might be.

The order also doesn’t go as far as NTSB has recommended. Instead of requiring that all windows be replaced, the order tells airlines that beginning on Aug. 17 they must inspect planes within 500 flight hours and, if evidence of damage is found, replace the windows. The order gives airlines a choice of installing windows of a similar design or the new design. Carriers that choose old design replacements must continue to inspect windows at regular intervals.

NTSB had urged that only the new designs be used for replacements.

FAA said it was aware of 11 cases of fires in the planes over the past 20 years. However, Boeing has said it is aware of 29 incidents involving fire or smoke over the past eight years.

A review by AP of NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System — a confidential database to which pilots, flight attendants, airline mechanics and others voluntarily report safety concerns — and NTSB records found a dozen incidents since 2002 of arcing and shattered windows in addition to a similar number of incidents involving fire or smoke. The review included 747s as well as the other models.

FAA spokesman Les Dorr told AP last month that one reason the safety order was delayed was that the agency had received new information indicating that both the upper window terminals that connect wires to the heaters were a source of arcing. Previously, he said, the agency was aware of incidents involving only the lower two terminals.

FAA said it is considering issuing another safety order addressing the upper two terminals in 757 planes only.

American, Continental, Delta and United airlines told FAA in 2008 that they were opposed to the safety fix, which they said didn’t address the root cause of the problem.

WASHINGTON – Factory orders for big-ticket manufactured declined in May as demand for commercial aircraft dropped off. But excluding transportation, orders rose as manufacturing continued to help drive the recovery.

Demand for durable goods fell 1.1 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Thursday. It was the first decline in six months, following April’s strong 3 percent increase.

But without the volatile transportation sector, orders climbed 0.9 percent. The increase was driven by a 5.6 percent uptick in orders for machinery. Non-transportation orders in April fell by 0.8 percent.

More companies are investing in costly machinery as the recovery gains strength. As manufacturing continues to surge, companies are growing more confident. They are adding jobs, revving up production and buying more equipment.

A durable good is a product expected to last at least three years.

The results were largely in line with analysts’ expectations.

Spending by businesses was up 2.1 percent after falling 2.7 percent in April, another sign that recovery is taking root.

Analysts say orders for Boeing Co. fell in May after surging in April. That decline offset gains for machinery, raw metals and computers.

Communications equipment orders fell 9.4 percent. It was that sector’s largest decline since December 2008, at the peak of the financial crisis.

EVERETT, Wash., June 16 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — The first Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner with General Electric (GE) engines, the airplane referred to as ZA005, completed its first flight at 6:29 p.m. (Pacific time) today, following a 3-hour-and-48-minute flight over the state of Washington.

GE executives and Boeing employees were on hand to welcome Captains Mike Bryan and Mike Carriker to Boeing Field in Seattle following completion of the flight.

“The airplane handled just like I expected,” said Bryan, who captained the flight. “It was just like every other 787 flight that I’ve flown in the last several months – smooth, per plan and excellent.”

“We’re pleased to introduce the fifth Dreamliner to the flight-test fleet and to start flight testing with GE engines,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “It’s taken the collective resources and dedication of our teams to get to this day. There’s just nothing like a first flight to validate that it has been worth the sacrifices we have all seen our teams make in the past several years.”

ZA005 will be used to test the General Electric engine package and demonstrate that the changes made with the new engine do not change the airplane’s handling characteristics.

The sixth, and final, 787 to join the flight test program is expected to fly before the end of July.

About the 787 Dreamliner

The 787 Dreamliner is an all-new twinjet designed to meet the needs of airlines around the world in providing nonstop service between mid-size cities with new levels of efficiency. The airplane will bring improved levels of comfort to passengers with larger windows, bigger baggage bins and advances in the cabin environment, including lower cabin altitude, higher humidity and cleaner air. Delivery of the first 787 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2010.

Fifty-six customers around the world have ordered 860 787s since the program was launched in April 2004, making the Dreamliner the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.

SEATTLE, June 4 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — The Boeing (NYSE: BA) Airplane Health Management (AHM) system will monitor Jade Cargo’s fleet of six 747-400 Freighter airplanes, under an agreement announced today. AHM is an information-driven system that helps airlines improve the management of unscheduled maintenance events.

“I believe AHM can extremely improve efficiency and reliability in our flight operation,” said Jade Cargo International CEO and Captain Kay Kratky upon signing the agreement. “I am looking forward to more cooperation with Boeing.”

Jade Cargo will incorporate all three AHM modules into its operation — Real-Time Fault Management, Performance Monitoring and Custom Alerting and Analysis.

“This is a big commitment by Jade Cargo to improve efficiency, maintenance performance and overall fleet awareness,” said Dennis Floyd, vice president of Fleet Services for Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We look forward to Airplane Health Management making a significant difference in the airline’s operation.”

The Real-Time Fault Management module communicates in-flight information to ground stations for diagnosis and real-time operational decisions to initiate any needed maintenance operations and deploy the necessary people, parts and equipment.

Performance Monitoring will allow Jade Cargo to analyze airplane performance data to improve airplane fuel efficiency and flight planning.

Custom Alerting and Analysis enables the airline to address developing airplane system issues by automatically monitoring, collecting, and transmitting service level information including tire pressure, oxygen pressure, hydraulic fluid, Auxiliary Power Unit and engine oil levels. Consumption trends are then used to facilitate maintenance planning and optimize service intervals.

Airplane Health Management works through the MyBoeingFleet.com portal. Alerts and notifications are delivered to airline personnel through the Internet, fax, personal digital assistants, e-mail and pager services.

Airplane Health Management is a key component in Boeing’s larger vision of the e-enabled airline, where information technology, connectivity and strategic integration promise greater efficiency and improved airline operations.

Jade Cargo International was founded by Shenzhen Airlines Company Limited, Lufthansa Cargo AG and DEG – Deutsche Investitions – und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, a subsidiary of KfW-Bank Group.
