EU leaders adopt landmark eurozone reforms: diplomats
BRUSSELS (AFP) – EU leaders on Thursday adopted a vast plan of action to tighten budgetary discipline across bloc borders, the biggest change since the euro currency’s introduction in 1999, a diplomatic source said. They also said there was a “need” to create a permanent, Greek-style emergency fund for the eurozone, although Germany has made the setting up of such a safety net conditional on changing the bloc’s treaty.
Stand-in skipper Lahm brushes off captaincy snub
BRUSSELS (AFP) – Stand-in Germany captain Philipp Lahm on Thursday denied he had any problems with coach Joachim Loew’s decision to retain Michael Ballack as permanent skipper for the Euro 2012 campaign. Ballack, 34 later this month, is out of Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Belgium in Brussels as he recovers from the ankle injury which ruled him out of the World Cup, but will captain Germany again when he returns.
Gay wins 100 meters in 9.79 seconds in Brussels (AP)
BRUSSELS – American Tyson Gay has won the Diamond League trophy as the season’s top performer in the 100 meters, finishing in 9.79 seconds to beat Jamaican Nesta Carter. Gay was looking to beat his personal best of 9.69, the time he shares with Usain Bolt as the second-fastest ever.
