<p>NEW YORK – There has been intense competition going on at the U.S. Open, and it has nothing to do with aces or foot faults.</p>
<p>Instead, five of Bravo TV&#8217;s &#8220;Top Chef Masters&#8221; have been working to create the best food of the tournament — something more elegant than hot dogs, pretzels and burgers.</p>
<p>To that end, they&#8217;ve created recipes like pulled pork tacos and shrimp and tilapia burgers.</p>
<p>All of the dishes have been on sale since the start of the tennis championship last week, and the creator of the most popular dish wins $5,000 for their favorite charity.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>Mild hurricane season shifts disaster relief to 20,000 people served by local food banks</h3>
<p>Feeding America, the nation&#8217;s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, and Abbott, the global healthcare company, today announced that more than $400,000 in adult and pediatric nutritionals originally intended for hurricane relief are now available to feed families at 20 food banks in seven states and Puerto Rico.</p>
<p>In early 2009, Abbott and Feeding America embarked on a partnership to &#8220;pre-position&#8221; nutritional products to regions that are highly vulnerable to hurricanes.</p>
<p>By staging relief supplies in parts of the country in advance of being hit by hurricanes, people can be helped in a matter of hours or days instead of waiting for seven to ten days for emergency aid requests to be filled.</p>
<p>With the close of the 2009 hurricane season on November 30, the pre-positioned products that were stocked in preparation for major storms will now be re-directed to feed families via food banks.</p>
<p>&#8220;Partnering with Feeding America ensures that critical products are available to those who need them during and beyond the threat of hurricane season,&#8221; said Kathy Pickus, divisional vice president, Global Citizenship and Policy, Abbott.</p>
<p>&#8220;By working with Feeding America&#8217;s established network of food banks, many families can now have access to nutritional food.&#8221;</p>
<p>The food pantry locations were selected based on proximity to areas vulnerable to hurricanes, their capacity to assist in disaster response and recovery, and on population coverage.  The disaster relief packs consist of nutrition shakes and bars for adults, and nutrition and re-hydration drinks for children.</p>
<p>The packs are specifically for families of different sizes and can collectively feed more than 20,000 people.</p>
<p>&#8220;We remain extremely grateful to Abbott for helping us pre-position relief supplies at our food banks in strategically important locations,&#8221; said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO, Feeding America.</p>

<p>As the economy&#8217;s slow recovery continues to take a heavy toll on our schools, the need for additional funding has never been greater. That is why U.S. Cellular is continuing its commitment to education with a $1 million donation to schools.</p>
<p>Once again, the <strong>Calling All Communities</strong> campaign will award $100,000 to 10 schools across the nation. Public and private schools, kindergarten through high school, big or small, all are eligible to win.</p>
<p>From Nov. 13, 2009, through Jan. 15, 2010, individuals 18 years or older can visit any U.S. Cellular store to get a code to vote online for their school.</p>
<p>There is no purchase necessary and you don&#8217;t have to be a U.S. Cellular customer to vote. The 10 schools with the most votes will receive $100,000 to use however they choose.</p>
<p>&#8220;Many school districts are literally in crisis mode,&#8221; said Jeff Childs, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for U.S. Cellular. &#8220;As a company, we care about kids and the quality of the education they receive.</p>
<p>The passion and energy of our 9,000 associates will help spread the word as we get behind this common purpose.&#8221;</p>
<p>There is plenty of evidence of the need for help. At least 36 states have cut or proposed cuts to education, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.</p>
<p>A University of Washington study projects that states will cut an average of 18 percent of their education spending over the next three years.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://www.aasa.org/uploadedFiles/Resources/files/LookingBackLookingForward.pdf">survey</a> conducted by the American Association of School Administrators, 76 percent of school administrators report that the economic downturn has negatively affected student achievement.</p>
<p>The drastic budget reductions are forcing many school districts to eliminate academic programs, extra-curricular activities, staff and basic school supplies. More than three in five parents (61 percent) believe the quality of education will suffer because of school cutbacks.</p>
<p>Last year&#8217;s <strong>Calling All Communities </strong>campaign was driven by U.S. Cellular associates&#8217; grassroots efforts and communities rallying behind their schools. More than 120,000 votes were cast for 6,500 schools across the country.</p>
<p>Winners represented public and private schools in Wisconsin, Illinois, Oklahoma, North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, Nebraska and Iowa. Funds were used for everything from scholarships and computer labs to playgrounds and gymnasium renovations.</p>
<p>Wendy Hooks, principal of Brogden Primary, a winning school in Dudley, N.C., spoke of other intangible benefits of being a <strong>Calling All Communities</strong> champion.</p>

<p>Since the beginning of 2009, students have made donations to the Touch Research Institute, Crystal Lake Food Pantry, Cancer Support Center, Massage Therapy Foundation, Imerman Angels, Red Door Animal Shelter, Ronald McDonald House, Project Vida, Helping Paws Animal Shelter, AIDS Foundation of Chicago, American Diabetes Association, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.</p>
<p>Due to massage licensing laws in the State of Illinois, students are not permitted to accept any gratuities until they are licensed. Therefore, students who work in the Cortiva Student Clinic created the &#8220;Thank You Fund,&#8221; which clients donated to over the course of the year.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Grant expands evidence-based therapies for children with autism</strong></p>
<p>The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust announced a $300,000 grant to Easter Seals to advance evidence-based autism services for young children nationwide.</p>
<p>The grant, made possible through the CVS Caremark All Kids Can Program™, is in response to families’ need for greater access to autism services as reflected in key findings of Easter Seals’ recent Living with Autism Study.* These funds enhance nearly $6 million already provided to Easter Seals through the All Kids Can Program in which Easter Seals is a national partner.</p>
<p>“We know that through early detection and individualized intervention, autism is treatable,” said Patricia Wright, Ph.D., national director autism services, Easter Seals. “This CVS Caremark grant will help advance professional training for Easter Seals’ therapists to assure enhanced availability of essential evidence-based interventions.”</p>
<p>As many as one out of 150 children today is diagnosed with autism, and the need for treatments continues to grow exponentially. Getting the right support at the earliest stage in life makes all the difference. Known as early intervention, this critical type of service gives children the skills they need to be successful. As the nation’s largest non-profit provider of autism services, Easter Seals is committed to responding to the needs of families living with autism.</p>
<p>Families living with autism not only require access to services, but also to appropriate insurance coverage for these critical treatments. A portion of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust gift will underwrite a study by Georgetown University’s Health Policy Institute to provide resources to families living with autism.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Catholic Charities’ New Hope Apartments program helps formerly-homeless families become self-sufficient through a 24-month process of goal-setting, budgeting, counseling, resource management and skill-building.</p>
<p>Over the course of the two years, families gradually pick up more of their housing expenses, which are subsidized through Catholic Charities, so that at the end of the program they can take on full payment of their rent.</p>
<p>Funded by a mix of public and private dollars, Catholic Charities’ New Hope Apartments program annually assists about 150 families across Chicago and its suburbs.</p>
<p>Parishes are key partners in this effort as they commit to paying rent on New Hope apartments and donate house wares, furniture, and other necessities to New Hope families.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bears, bowling and benefiting charity, the synergy was apparent and moods were high. On Tuesday, Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) wrapped up its three month bowling promotion with a packed house at eSkape Entertainment Center in Buffalo Grove.</p>
<p>Starting in April the Food Bank brought a bowling tournament to 6 communities with the hopes of raising funds and awareness for their fight against hunger. Qualifying rounds were held in Bolingbrook, St. Charles, Carol Stream, Woodridge, Algonquin and Buffalo Grove.</p>
<p>On Tuesday night twenty-four teams (including two composed of Former Chicago Bears standouts) each did their best to take home the coveted “Hunger Cup”. In the end, though, there could only be one winner. The highest scoring team was ACOSTA Sales and Marketing with a score of 2,897. According to ACOSTA team member Mike Puttrich the hunger cup trophy “is like the Stanley Cup of Bowling”. Strike Out Hunger Champion is one title he wants to retain. Puttrich and his teammates will automatically be placed into a qualifying round next year to defend their title.</p>
<p>Among the former Chicago Bears players in attendance were James “Big Cat” Williams, Otis Wilson, Glen Kozlowski, and Jim Morrissey. They signed memorabilia, posed for photos and chatted up the crowd. And when it came time to do some bowling they proved they could do more than play football. Also included in the event were raffles, a 50-50 drawing and silent auction items.</p>
<p><strong>The event raised almost $25,000</strong> which will purchase roughly <strong>200,000 pounds of food</strong> and go a long way towards helping the Food Bank in their fight to end hunger.</p>
<p>With unemployment in Illinois above 10 percent, many people going to food pantries and other food assistance sites are doing so for the first time in their lives.</p>
