He ends his time with the team with a winning record, 316 wins and 293 losses. After Sunday’s game against the Braves, Piniella got tearful talking to reporters about his tenure with the Cubs. PINIELLA: These are nice people here and they’re nice fans and I was very appreciative, very moved, very touched. The Cubs report Piniella ends his baseball managerial career as the 14th winningest manager in the league’s history.

CHICAGO – Lou Piniella says he’s retiring after the Chicago Cubs’ game against the Atlanta Braves so he can spend more time with his family. The 66-year-old manager made the announcement in a release handed out by the team before Sunday’s game.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella to retire
CHICAGO (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Tuesday he will retire after the season, ending a storied and colorful career that included 18 years as a player, 22 as a manager. Piniella, 66, who made five trips to the World Series in his career and has three championship rings, said he was looking forward to spending more time with his family. He didn’t rule out consulting for the Cubs or another team, but made it clear he was getting out of the daily grind. “It’s been a wonderful experience,” he said. “There’s no way that I won’t cherish the memories here.” But, he added: “I’ve been away from home since 1962. That’s about 50 years.”
