“Whatever decision we make will be the best for the ballclub,” Guillen told a crowd during SoxFest at the Palmer House.

Guillen emphasized the Sox’s decision would be made with their brains, rather than their heart.

General manager Ken Williams made it clear Saturday that he was leaving it to Guillen to decide whether Thome would be a good fit for the 2010 Sox team.

Guillen, who has said he wants to decide before he leaves town, added that his flight to Miami was moved from
4 p.m. Sunday to Monday.

”Nobody is a bigger Jim Thome fan than me,” Guillen said at U.S. Cellular Field.

”But in the meantime, (Thome’s departure) gives this ballclub an opportunity to give more people more at-bats and to be flexible in different ways.”

Guillen said Mark Kotsay, Andruw Jones, Paul Konerko, Omar Vizquel and Carlos Quentin can serve as the DH.

”To me, it’s easier and we get more production with the team we have now that way.”

Guillen pointed that only a few teams, such as Boston (David Ortiz) and Cleveland (Travis Hafner) have full-time DHs. That’s one possible reason why Thome remains available as a free agent.

”Fans, they’re not going to be happy about something,” Guillen said.”Or a question mark as to why we don’t have a big left-handed hitter. We did for a couple years. The ballclub we had in the past didn’t create that many runs.

‘(Obviously) we’re going to play different. We’re not going to wait for guys who can hit 30 home runs. I hope not. I hope they don’t come to the mentality that we need pop.”

Guillen promised the Sox would employ a style that realizes less on home runs and is willing to sacrifice the power in late-inning situations.

”How good are we going to be? I’ll take my chance,” said Guillen, alluding to the lack of questions surrounding open jobs in spring training. ”It was fun for me, because I kept you guys busy.”

Guillen compared this off-season to the one that preceded the World Series title season in 2005 with so many moves.

”I’m not going to say we’re going to win, but it worked,” Guillen said. ”I think the direction we’re going is the right one.”

Guillen welcomed the switch of Gordon Beckham from third base to second and looks for more leadership from shortstop Alexei Ramirez and Beckham.

Guillen also got positive feedback from Alex Rios, who will benefit from a full spring training with his new team after struggling during the final two months.

”From the first day in spring training, we have to create how we’re going to play during the season,” Guillen said. ”I’m not going to wait until the last week of spring training. No, you’re going to see in the first day bunting and hit-and-run.

‘You’re going to see stuipd things from the manager, crazy things from the manager. You’re going to wonder what Ozzie is doing, but we’re going to see what we can work with.”

Guillen also issued a warning for his players to remain in shape.

”I think A.T. (conditioning coordinator Allen Thomas) is going to have a lot of problems because everyone has to stay on the top of conditioning,” Guillen said. ”He’s got to have a whip. Maybe it’s my fault. We let a lot of things happen and we look back and someone is out of shape.”

Guillen wasn’t pointing fingers directly at closer Bobby Jenks, who expressed his objection to Guillen saying last October that Jenks needed to report in better condition.

”I was surprised what happened,” Guillen said, referring to Jenks’ reply to comments made by general manager Ken Williams and Guillen about his health.

”We want the best from him. If Bobby is in the best shape he can be, he can help us.”

Guillen said he talked in stern tones to rookie Miguel Cabrera in 2003 when they were in Florida about the need to lose weight.

”I got in his face,” Guillen said. ”I said, ‘bro, if you want to be a better baseball player, you got to lose all that weight.’ Sometimes the truth hurts.”

Guillen reiterated that Jenks remains the Sox’s closer ”until he can’t be my closer.”

As far as Thome is concerned, he wouldn’t rule out a return to the Sox’s family.

”My door is open,” said Thome, a free agent who spent nearly four full seasons with the Sox before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 31. ”Just call me.”

Thome said he understands the business side of baseball while praising the entire Sox’s organization.

”I want to play baseball,” Thome said. ”Right now we’re talking to a few teams, and we’ll see what happens. It’s been a slow winter in the market.”

Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, who started the campaign with Thome and their wives, doesn’t believe the door has closed on a return by Jermaine Dye and Thome.

”There is still an outside chance on both of them, certainly Jim,” Konerko said. ”I wouldn’t shut the door on that yet. And even if it was for this year, I wouldn’t shut the door on it for the future. We’ll see. I like the way the team is shaping up otherwise.

” … I know they’re going to be playing somewhere. When I show up to spring training and they’re not there, I’ll worry about that.”

Konerko said he was ”always” lobbying on Jim’s behalf, stating that Thome and Dye can remain productive players.

”They’ll be fine, no matter what.”

In other Sox news, John Danks said a follow-up examination on his left index finger was fine.

Tickets to the three Cubs’ games at U.S. Cellular Field on June 25-27 will cost as much as $100 – a $32 increase from premier games in the premium LG skyline club box and premium lower box sections.

But Brooks Boyer, the Sox’s vice president/chief marketing officer, said the reality is that the prices for those games are similar to what the Cubs charge for their ”Platinum” games at Wrigley Field.

Club box and mezzanine suites seats for Cubs-White Sox games at Wrigley cost $100. The dugout box seats, located directly behind the backstop, cost $350 for Platinum games, according to the Cubs’ Web site.

But the Sox wanted to get Viciedo, 20, acclimated to first, a position that could give him the best chance of reaching the majors with newly acquired third baseman Mark Teahen signed for three more years and Brent Morel making a strong impression in the Arizona Fall League.

Also, incumbent first baseman Paul Konerko is in the final year of a five-year contract.

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound Viciedo impressed the Sox with his hitting last spring as a non-roster invitee but spent the 2009 season at Double-A Birmingham.

Nevertheless, he showed some promise at first, according to Cora.

“He may be big, but he’s a good athlete,” Cora said. ”His bat will carry him. That kid has some serious, serious talent.”

It appears Williams is a lock as the second left-handed reliever to Matt Thornton unless non-roster invitee Erick Threets harnesses the wildness and overcomes the injuries that have stunted his development with the San Francisco Giants’ and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ organizations.

Threets, 29, was throwing as hard as 97 mph in 1997 and made 10 appearances with the Giants in 2007-08. He struck out seven, but walked 12 in 12 1/3 innings.

Last year, Threets struck out 28 but walked 16 in 41 1/3 innings for Triple-A Albuquerque. He could be one of pitching coach Don Cooper’s prime spring-training projects.

Threets missed all of 2004 because of an arm injury.

The Chicago White Sox, Comcast SportsNet, WGN-TV and WSCR Radio (670 AM) have announced the team’s 2010 broadcast schedule for spring training.

The White Sox will televise six Cactus League games (five on Comcast SportsNet and one on WGN). WSCR, the club’s flagship radio station, will air 10 spring training games.

The Sox also will Webcast nine spring training games free on whitesox.com.

The first televised spring training game by Comcast SportsNet is on Saturday, March 13 at 3:05 p.m. when the White Sox face the Chicago Cubs at Cashman Field in Las Vegas.

WGN-TV will televise one Cactus League game when the White Sox take on the San Diego Padres Saturday, March 20 at 3:05 p.m.

Ken “Hawk” Harrelson and Steve Stone will work all six games in their second season together as the White Sox television broadcast team.

Harrelson is set to begin his 21st season as the television voice of the White Sox, while Stone enters his second year on television.

WSCR broadcasts the first of its 10 games on Thursday, March 4 at 4:05 p.m. when the White Sox open spring training against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Tempe.

WSCR again will feature the on-air team of Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson. Four of the 10 game broadcasts (March 6, 12, 19 and 20) feature an “interactive” format, allowing listeners to interact with broadcasters after the third inning of the game.

The Chicago White Sox will celebrate Mark Buehrle’s historic July 23 perfect game and his Major League Baseball (MLB) record-setting streak of 45 consecutive batters retired during the upcoming three-game series vs. the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (August 4-6) at U.S. Cellular Field.

The “Buehrle Appreciation Series” will feature a special ceremony prior to the game on Tuesday, August 4. All fans will have the opportunity to purchase specially priced tickets for all three games of the series.

In honor of the nine perfect innings thrown by the All-Star lefty during his perfect game, Upper Reserved seats will be available for $9 (originally priced at $23), while Lower Reserved and Bleacher seats will be available for $27 (originally priced $38 and $37, respectively) for the 27 consecutive Tampa Bay batters retired during the memorable game.

All three games of the White Sox series vs. the Angels will feature limited-edition ‘Perfect Game’ and ‘MLB Record-Setting’ giveaways for all fans in attendance (limited qualities, while supplies last).

All fans attending Tuesday’s game will receive a limited-edition Mark Buehrle Perfect Game Placard, presented by Apple Vacations. Details on the limited-edition Mark Buehrle giveaways, along with information on the previously scheduled promotional activities, will be announced soon.
