HONG KONG (AFP) – Air China is to buy 20 passenger planes from Airbus in deal worth 4.49 billion US dollars, the airline said in a statement filed with the Hong Kong stock exchange on Thursday. China’s leading carrier said it would acquire 10 Airbus A330 and 10 Airbus A350 series aircraft from the France-based aviation consortium, for which it would pay in cash instalments.

SHANGHAI (AFP) – Chinese stocks closed down 5.16 percent on Friday, as investors scrambled to bank profits before the government introduces any new monetary tightening measures, dealers said. The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was down 162.31 points at 2,985.44 on turnover of 298.4 billion yuan (44.9 billion dollars).

SHANGHAI – China is not using its control over supplies of rare earth — exotic metals crucial in advanced manufacturing — as a diplomatic “bargaining chip,” state media quoted Premier Wen Jiabao as saying during a visit to Europe. Recent reports that Beijing had temporarily suspended shipments to Japan of the metallic elements, used in computer disk drives, hybrid car components and other high-tech products, has drawn attention to China’s near monopoly on the materials.
