SHANGHAI – Beijing has the capacity to control surging prices while keeping economic growth on track, China’s main planning agency said Monday, in the latest effort to quell public anxiety about simmering inflation. Conditions are right for cooling prices, despite worries over rising food costs, the National Development said Reform Commission said Monday on its website.

LISBON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama and European Union leaders called on major economies once again Saturday to avoid waging a war of competing currency devaluations. The two economic powers met at a time of global market concern over the fragile state of indebted European economies, amid fears that countries may fight to lower their currencies’ values to boost exports.

SEOUL (AFP) – The United States is “very encouraged” by China’s progress in allowing the yuan to rise, despite “heat” and public rows with Beijing over exchange rates, a senior US official said Friday. The official, speaking at the G20 summit in Seoul, said Beijing was also moving towards addressing some of Washington’s other concerns, including on trade and intellectual property issues.

LISBON, Portugal – Chinese President Hu Jintao has started a two-day state visit to Portugal where officials are hoping investments by Beijing will help revive one of the European Union’s frailest economies. China has been using its large foreign currency reserves to expand its economic presence in western Europe.

PARIS (AFP) – Chinese President Hu Jintao said that Beijing’s currency policy, under fire from the United States and European Union for keeping the yuan low so as to boost exports, is coherent and responsible. “To redress commercial imbalances, the parties concerned must change their pattern of development, restructure their economies and promote free and fair trade, fighting any form of trade protectionism,” Hu told Tuesday’s Le Figaro daily ahead of a visit to France this week.
