NEW YORK – Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher says it was hard to get through to Ben Roethlisberger after his early success, but now “you’re going to see a different person.” The quarterback was suspended six games after a Georgia college student accused him of sexual assault. Although he was not charged, commissioner Roger Goodell cited a “pattern of behavior” that set a bad example.
Evra to appeal French World Cup football ban (AFP)
PARIS (AFP) – French skipper Patrice Evra is to appeal the five-match ban he was handed by a discipinary commission for co-leading a training strike during an abortive World Cup, his lawyer said Monday. “To this day, Mr Patrice Evra has not received notification of the decision by the Federal Disciplinary Commission (of the French Football Federation) on August 17 banning him from the French team for five matches,” Jean-Yves Foucard said.
Piniella says he’s retiring after Sunday’s game
CHICAGO – Lou Piniella says he’s retiring after the Chicago Cubs’ game against the Atlanta Braves so he can spend more time with his family. The 66-year-old manager made the announcement in a release handed out by the team before Sunday’s game.
Strasburg strains forearm in Nationals’ win (AP)
PHILADELPHIA – Rookie ace Stephen Strasburg exited early, wincing with a strained tendon in his right forearm, and the Washington Nationals went on to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-1 Saturday night. Strasburg left with one out in the fifth inning.
