Before Natalie Portman’s career re-exploded, with her grabbing a gig in ‘Thor,’ stunning audiences with ‘Black Swan’ and finding her name linked to a huge pile of new features, Portman was increasing her presence behind the camera. She had created her own production shingle, was looking to direct Amos Oz’s ‘A Take of Love and Darkness’ and helmed a short in last year’s ‘New York, I Love You.’ Though acting seemed to derail those passions for a few years, the creative juices are once again bubbling to the surface.

LOS ANGELES – Twentieth Century Fox’s “Machete” is set to slice up the competition as director Robert Rodriguez’s star-studded extravaganza will likely dominate the weekend with a Friday through Monday total of around $16 million. With co-star Lindsey Lohan all over the news lately and the film’s theme of illegal immigration at the forefront of a national debate, this decidedly over-the-top and very nonpolitically correct action-comedy hybrid should give the summer a proper and bloody send off as we move into the more subdued fall movie season.

NEW YORK – Earlier this summer, Michael Ian Black took to his blog to defend himself against those appalled that the comedian was — gasp! — inserting rare advertisements to his popular Twitter feed. Black explained that occasionally hiring himself to sell products “allows me the freedom to take less well-paying jobs like making soon-to-be-canceled television shows.” Then he made a more serious point.
