Durable goods orders rise, business spending cools (AP)
WASHINGTON – A surge in demand for commercial aircraft lifted orders for big-ticket manufactured goods in September, but businesses spent less on products that would signal expansion. The Commerce Department says orders for durable goods rose 3.3 percent last month.

Verizon posts 25 pct profit drop for 3Q (AP)
NEW YORK – Verizon says its profit fell 25 percent in the third quarter, held back by a one-time pension settlement. The nation’s second biggest phone company said Friday that its net income fell to $881 million, or 31 cents per share, in the July-September period.
