Aldermen weigh powers of the Inspector General
CHICAGO (WBBM) – Chicago aldermen have been meeting to decide to what degree—if any—they’d be willing to allow the city’s Inspector General to look into their activities.
Mayor Daley proposes sweeping expansion of the Inspector General’s power to include investigations of aldermen, and some City Council members object, saying the IG is appointed by and answers to the mayor and that’s too much power in the mayor’s hands.
Rules Committee chairman Dick Mell notes the mayor is mainly concerned with hiring, and the aldermen might be willing to let the IG investigate hiring by aldermen.
But, Aldermen Fredrenna Lyle, who’s chairing a group looking into the matter, says some aldemen fear this is just an old-fashioned power grab by the IG.
She says some aldermen suggest current inspector general Joe Ferguson just wants to consolidate powers, and hiring is not the issue.
The aldermen hope to find some meeting of the minds ahead of Wednesday’s Council meeting.
