For those with diabetes, controlling blood pressure is crucial, but not urgent

January 9, 2012 A new study suggests that middle-aged adults recently diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension have time to try to learn how to control their high blood pressure without medications, but not too much time. The consequences of delaying effective hypertension treatment for up to a year were small–a two-day reduction in quality-adjusted life expectancy–according to a study by University of Chicago researchers published online for the Journal of General Internal Medicine .

$3 Million Grant to Aid Minorities with Uncontrolled Diabetes

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Institute for Health Research and Policy and College of Medicine have received a $3 million federal grant to improve diabetes management in minority patients. The grant will fund a five-year study to evaluate a new intervention designed to improve lifestyle behaviors and medication compliance and to intensify therapy in minority patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.

Ron Santo, Cubs legend, dies at 70

Chicago Cubs great and longtime WGN Radio announcer Ron Santo died Thursday night of complications from bladder cancer. He was 70. In a statement Friday, Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts praised Santo for “his passion, his loyalty, high great personal courage and his tremendous sense of humor.” WGN reports that Santo died in an Arizona hospital from complications of bladder cancer. Santo was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 18 and later lost both legs to diabetes.

PARIS – French health officials say the now-banned diabetes and weight loss drug Mediator may have been linked to the deaths of about 500 people. France’s health products safety agency is advising users of the drug — the brand name for benflourex in France — from 2006 to 2009 to see their doctor to check for possible heart valve problems.
