SAN FRANCISCO – Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer to back Tim Lincecum, and the first-place San Francisco Giants remained two games ahead of San Diego in the NL West with a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. The Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 at home.
Group urges Selig to move 2011 All-Star Game (AP)
WASHINGTON – Sunday’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals was briefly interrupted by protesters urging commissioner Bud Selig to move the 2011 All-Star Game from Phoenix because of Arizona’s new immigration legislation. A man emerged from the left-field stands in the fifth inning and ran into short right field after Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg grounded to short for the first out.
Orioles hire Buck Showalter as manager
BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Orioles have hired Buck Showalter to be their manager. Showalter’s first game will be Tuesday night at Camden Yards against the Los Angeles Angels.
Italian Hall of Fame Facing Foreclosure
Chicago – The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in Chicago’s Little Italy is facing foreclosure. Bridgeview Bank Group, which holds the $8.3 million mortgage on the hall of fame on the 1400 block of West Taylor Street, filed foreclosure papers this week in Cook County Circuit Court.
Suns to wear ‘Los Suns’ jerseys for Game 2 (AP)
PHOENIX – The Phoenix Suns will wear “Los Suns” on their jerseys in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, owner Robert Sarver said, “to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation.” The decision to wear the jerseys on the Cinco de Mayo holiday stems from a law passed by the Arizona Legislature and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer that has drawn widespread criticism from Latino organizations and civil rights groups that say it could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics.
