Chicago, Ill. (Nov. 14, 2010) — Lightswitch Architectural is proud to be the only independent Lighting Design firm to be exhibiting at Greenbuild 2010 in Chicago, Ill. Lightswitch Architectural will be showcasing its abilities to provide sustainable lighting design while maintaining creative interest and quality lighting.

In addition, Lightswitch Architectural is showcasing a number of sustainable products that we have come to use on our energy efficient and LEED® projects around the world. Lightswitch Architectural is a design only practice and does not sell or get remuneration from any manufactures. We specify the best products for the given application.

The Xicito spot module is the first genuine LED equivalent to halogen module on the market in a MR16 size. Two versions are being shown at the show. The standard series module with 80 CRI and 2700K color temperature and the Artist series 95 CRI and 2700K color temperature.

The VLX Wash from Philips Vara-Lite is the first high power color changing LED moving head wash fixture. Colors change instantly compared to equal products using HID source, power use is dramatically reduced, and lamp life is greatly increased.

Seven color mixing chambers create a range from 3000K to 9000K color temperatures and a dynamic range of colors. First of its kind cooling systems are used to keep the LEDs at the proper temperature.

Tempo Industries has created an amazing 2700K LED cove product with the lowest carbon footprint on the market. The heat sync and metals in the product have no mercury or hazardous waste. The housing is not painted so the zinc can easily be melted down and recycled. The product is easy to install and has a great light quality.

The Philips EnduraLED A19 lamp is the lamp of the future. At 12.6 watts and 807 lumens it is the first solid state replacement for the most common lamp, the 60w A19 incandescent lamp. The lamp is 2685K and 81 CRI.

Come see this amazing new lamp.

Please visit us at booth L419. We will also be hosting a special event “Lightworking: Where Sustainable Lighting comes together at Greenbuild 2010” on Thursday evening from 5:30-8:00 PM at Britten Banners, 1420 South Michigan Avenue.

CHICAGO – New limits on free gifts to doctors have hit the ubiquitous free lattes and coffee seen at major medical meetings like the one here of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The conference exhibit floor still features massive information booths from cancer drugmakers like Roche Holding AG , Bristol-Myers Squibb Co and Amgen Inc — though the days of shopping bags laden with pricey goodies are long gone.

Many drugmakers still offer coffee or candy with no strings attached; but Pfizer Inc requires doctors to swipe their registration cards and warns that physicians from Minnesota and Vermont are prohibited from imbibing.

“This is getting to the point of absurdity … Is this the way we are going to solve the issue of healthcare in this country?” said Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society.

Pfizer, which agreed last year to a $2.3 billion fine in a drug marketing case, also warns in a sign in front of the coffee machine that it may provide the names of coffee-drinking doctors to regulators. In March, Pfizer disclosed that it had paid $35 million to some 4,500 doctors and researchers for the last six months of 2009 for such services as speaking fees and work on clinical trials.

Officials at the company were not immediately available for comment on their coffee policy.

A couple of years ago, the exhibit floor would have been clogged with doctors picking up personalized pens, novelty toys, or framed photographs with people dressed up as major body organs.

But as healthcare costs rise, concern has grown about undisclosed financial ties between doctors and drugmakers.

Early last year, many companies said they would stop giving out small gifts such as pens and flash drives as part of new voluntary guidelines from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

The trade group had banned in 2002 more costly gifts like trips to resorts, and called for companies that pay for medical education at conferences to leave the content to outside experts.

Exhibit booths at ASCO also have to strictly separate medical information given out to international doctors compared with their U.S.-based peers, under guidelines set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Sometimes, this can also mean coffee only for doctors with foreign ID badges.

“I’m policing,” said a woman manning a podium in front of one international drugmaker’s espresso machine.

She was not authorized to speak on the record, but said the FDA is very serious about testing that its regulations are upheld.

“We had FDA people trying to sneak in yesterday. I had to stop them,” the exhibit monitor said.

Human Rights Program exhibit focuses attention on land mine survivors

The University’s Human Rights Program is launching a photography series aimed at exploring how photography is used in human rights discourse.

The first exhibit in the Looking at Human Rights series will feature Canadian photographer V. Tony Hauser’s portraits of children who survived land mine injuries.

Taken in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in May 2006, the 16 stark, life-sized portraits are intended to humanize the continued suffering caused by armed conflicts across the globe.

Hauser will introduce his exhibition, Living with Land Mines, at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22 at Harper Commons‘ Stuart Reading Room. The images will be on display through Winter Quarter.

Upcoming exhibits in the series will include photographs made by youth in a project in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as a human rights photo competition open to UChicago students.

A UChicago Arts Council grant has funded the series, and fourth-year Jasmine Heiss has curated it, with the support of the Human Rights Program.

Hauser’s work was selected because it illustrates the potential of the medium to bring marginalized groups and individuals to public attention. The children in his photographs live at the Cambodia Land Mine Museum, which also serves as a rescue center for land mine amputee children.

It provides a dormitory and a school, and has a medical clinic, rehabilitation center and a training facility for land mine accident prevention and safety.

“I purposely chose to isolate them from their natural surroundings,” says Hauser, who photographed the children using a 4 x 5-inch view camera, Polaroid film and a seamless canvas backdrop.

“I hoped this would elevate them and, at the same time, reveal my admiration for their strength.”

Living with Land Mines is the first exhibit to be displayed in the recently revamped Harper Commons, which is working to build a permanent and circulating artwork and photography collection as part of its reprogrammed space.

This event is free and open to the public. Stuart Reading Room is located at 1116 E. 59th St.

Historical Photos Document the Development of Public Transit in Chicago

As Chicago observes the centennial of architect Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, the Chicago Transit Authority is hosting an exhibit of historic transit photographs in the lobby of CTA headquarters at 567 W. Lake Street that runs through the end of February.

The exhibit will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit is comprised of approximately 30 historical photos provided by Greg Borzo, author of The Chicago ‘L’ and documents the development of the public transit system in Chicago which ultimately became the CTA.

Burnham, a renowned architect and city planner, co-authored the 1909 Plan of Chicago with fellow architect Edward H. Bennett.

The book laid out plans for the future of Chicago and encouraged the creation and extension of transportation systems.

Governor Pat Quinn joined with Gold Star Families for a ceremony at Wabash Valley College for the unveiling of the Portrait of a Soldier memorial exhibition.

“Today, as we remember those who lost their lives it is fitting that we honor our service members and their families,” said Governor Quinn. “I am honored to be joined today by Gold Star Families whose sons and daughters have lost their lives in the Global War on Terror and are Illinois’ true heroes.”

The exhibit will run through Wednesday, Oct. 28. It will be open from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday the 25th and from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The memorial exhibition, which has been viewed by thousands of people in more than 45 cities and towns throughout Illinois, is a series of hand-drawn portraits of more than 220 Illinois men and women who have died in service to our country since Sept.11, 2001.

Governor Quinn and Sen. John Jones were joined by members of Gold Star families including: Doris and Oscar Torres, parents of PFC Omar Torres (Chicago); Rev. Allen and Shirley Wright, parents of SPC Brian Wright (Keensburg); Teresa Clark, mother of LCpl Nicholas Kleiboeker (Irvington); Patricia and Terry Evans, mother and step father of SPC Ryan Carlock (Macomb); Betty Richards and Ruth Ridgely, mother and aunt of SSG K. Levi Ridgely (Olney); and Fred and Gay Eisenhauer, parents of PFC Wyatt D. Eisenhauer (Pinckneyville).

Artist Cameron Shilling of Mattoon drew the first portrait in August 2004, after Army Spc. Charles Neeley, also of Mattoon, was killed in Iraq. Schilling gave the sketch to Spc. Neely’s parents to convey his sympathy for their loss.

In October 2005, while a student at Eastern Illinois University, Schilling decided to draw a portrait of every Illinois servicemember who has fallen during the Global War on Terror.

The Field Museum’s newest exhibition, The Nature of Diamonds explores all aspects of this extraordinary mineral, from its geological origins to its place in history, art, and adornment, to its uses in modern technology and research.

Glamorous. Dazzling. Ancient. Born from billions of years of crushing geological force, diamond is a truly remarkable mineral. Its beauty has been prized by many cultures throughout the ages as a symbol of strength, wealth, and love.

The exhibition showcases the dual nature of diamonds, at once glittering and tough, decorative and utilitarian.

Featured are nearly 800 exquisite objects, including some of the world’s most stunning gems such as the 128.54-carat Tiffany Diamond – worn by actress Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s – one of the world’s largest and finest fancy yellow diamonds (right).

Along with this rare opportunity to see some of the world’s most precious gems, The Nature of Diamonds also provides an in-depth examination of earth science and diamond as a natural substance.

The Nature of Diamonds commands a 7,000-square-foot exhibition space on the Museum’s main level. The Field Museum opens the exhibition at the same time it opens its renovated Grainger Hall of Gems (a permanent exhibition on the mezzanine level). The two exhibitions complement each other, giving visitors a comprehensive and unprecedented look at the natural history of gems and gemstones, and examples of remarkable jewelry.

The Nature of Diamonds is made possible by the generous support of The Grainger Foundation of Lake Forest. “Even beyond viewing the incredibly beautiful gemstones on display, this extraordinary exhibition will deliver an unprecedented look at diamond,” said David Grainger, president of The Grainger Foundation. “We are most pleased to partner with The Field Museum to bring this exciting exhibition to Chicago.”

The Vault: Exhibition Centerpiece

The centerpiece of The Nature of Diamonds is The Vault where visitors will discover some of the exhibition’s most valuable pieces including many that have rarely been displayed.

Highlighted here is the world famous Incomparable Diamond – at 407.48 carats, it’s the largest flawless diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America and the third-largest cut diamond ever recorded.

Also featured are pieces from the collections of Princess Grace, Mae West, Catherine the Great, Joan Crawford, Elton John, and many more. Visitors will be thrilled by innovative designs such as architect Frank Gehry’s Diamonds in the Rough necklace and the graceful Question Mark necklace by Boucheron (right).

More Than Precious Jewelry

But the exhibition does not focus simply on jewelry; it is also a fascinating look at geologic processes, the cultural role of diamond through the ages, and how it is used in today’s cutting-edge technology.

Visitors will learn about the crystal structure of diamond, where diamond comes from, the role of diamond in history, how diamonds are judged as gemstones (the “four Cs”), how they are mined and sold – including an explanation of “blood diamonds” – how they are cut, and how they are used in industry. (See “Exhibition Walk Through” for more information on these sections.)

The Nature of Diamonds is a seamless blend of artistry and science. By exploring a single stone, the exhibition allows visitors to explore the deep cultural past and the exciting technological future of one of Earth’s most astonishing gems.

The Nature of Diamonds is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York, in collaboration with The Field Museum, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto.

Field Museum Admission

First Exhibition of its Kind Will Travel to the Met and Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto

Although collage is commonly thought of as a modern art form, the act of “playing with pictures” has a long, rich, and surprising history. Its roots are on full display in the unique exhibition Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage, on view from October 10, 2009 through January 3, 2010, in Photography Galleries 1 and 2 at the Art Institute of Chicago.

This exhibition is the first to comprehensively examine the little-known phenomenon of Victorian photocollage, presenting many eye-opening works that have rarely–and in many cases never–before been displayed or reproduced. Playing with Pictures will receive its world premiere at the Art Institute before traveling to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.

A full 60 years ahead of the avant-garde–and more than a century before Photoshop–aristocratic Victorian women were already making radical experiments with photocollage. During the Victorian era, photography became remarkably popular and accessible, as people posed for studio portraits and exchanged these pictures on a vast scale. The makers of the collages shown here cut up these portraits and placed them in elaborate watercolor designs in albums.

With their sharp wit, absurd senses of humor, and dramatic shifts of scale akin to those Alice experienced in Wonderland, these photocollages stand the rather serious conventions of photography in the 1860s and 1870s on their heads, debunking stuffy Victorian clichés with surreal, subversive, and funny images.

Oftentimes, the combination of photographic portraits with painted settings inspired dreamlike and even bizarre results: placing human heads on animal bodies; situating people in imaginary landscapes; and morphing faces into common household objects. Such images reveal the educated minds as well as accomplished hands of their makers, as they take on new theories of evolution, the changing role of photography, and the strict boundaries of aristocratic society. Together they provide a fascinating window into the creative possibilities of photography in the Victorian era and enduring inspiration for photographic experimentation today.

Playing with Pictures showcases the best of these albums and loose pages from collections across the United States, Europe, and Australia; 40 pages are shown in frames on the wall, while 11 separate albums are displayed in cases, accompanied by “virtual albums” on computer monitors for visitor interaction. One of the highlights of the exhibition is an exciting addition to the Art Institute’s permanent collection: the Madame B Album , a fascinating album of more than 140 pages of photographs and watercolor designs, which was acquired in 2005 and is on public display for the first time.

“Madame B” has been identified as Blanche Fournier, the wife of a French diplomat. In her clever, whimsical, and surreal world, photographic portraits dot the tail feathers of a turkey, faces decorate the wings of a colorful butterfly, and a secret language of flowers communicates hidden meanings.

Two catalogues, Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage by Elizabeth Siegel and The Marvelous Album of Madame B: Being the Handiwork of a Victorian Lady of Considerable Talent by Elizabeth Siegel and Martha Packer, will accompany this exhibition.

The Art of Victorian Photocollage constitutes the first full-length scholarly examination of the phenomenon of photocollage in the Victorian era, focusing on the themes and social meanings of photocollage as well as the avant-garde character of the art form. Published by Yale University Press for the Art Institute, the book reproduces 140 illustrations, most of which have never been printed before, and features essays by Elizabeth Siegel, Patrizia Di Bello, and Marta Weiss, and contributions by Miranda Hofelt. The Marvelous Album of Madame B reflects on both the experiences of the album’s creator, Blanche Fournier, as well as the history behind the photocollage album.

With more than 55 pages filled with photographs, collages, and watercolor designs, the book features repeating pictorial themes such as pattern, the animal kingdom, and keepsakes. The Marvelous Album of Madame B is published by Scala Publishers for the Art Institute. Both volumes can be purchased at the Museum Shop of the Art Institute.

Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage is curated by Elizabeth Siegel, Associate Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. The exhibition will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from February 2 to May 9, 2010, and at the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto from June 5 to September 5, 2010.

Major funding for Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage is generously provided by ART MENTOR FOUNDATION LUCERNE, the Smart Family Foundation, and Brenda Shapiro in memory of Earl Shapiro. Additional support provided by The Hite Foundation in memory of Sybil Hite and by Barbara Bluhm-Kaul and Don Kaul.

An early investigator of repetition and deconstruction of visual information, she has experimented with sequences, grids, scrolls, and large modular murals. Crane continues to work in many formats ranging from the intimate to the large scale and to use diverse materials and processes including platinum-palladium, Polaroid formats, gelatin silver, and digital.

Born in Chicago, Crane studied at Mills College in California, completing her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art History at New York University. She received her Master of Science Degree from the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. She began teaching photography in 1964 and soon joined the faculty of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she retired as Professor Emeritus in 1995.

Crane has been the recipient of many grants, awards, and fellowships, including the National Endowment for the Arts Grants in 1975 and 1988, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in Photography in 1979, and an Illinois Arts Council Artists Fellowship Award in Photography in 2001.
As Chicago celebrates the Centennial of its Burnham Plan, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents an exhibition of photographs taken by architectural and landscape photographer Tim Long.

In a month long residency in 2008, Long documented the buildings and streets of Manila built according to its own Burnham Plan.

Two years before he began work on the “Plan of Chicago,” Daniel Burnham drew plans to modernize Manila, the capitol of the Philippine Islands, and Baguio, a nearby small city.

Though shifting political and economic interests in the U.S. eventually disrupted the projects, these plans continued to influence architects and city planners, even building codes, well into the 1940s.

The greatest concentration of Burnham’s legacy can still be found in Metro Manila, an urban continuum of more than 10 million people. Clustered around the large city park that Burnham designed are several graceful Beaux Arts buildings built by his protégés. Typical of Burnham’s “City Beautiful” plans for San Francisco and Chicago, street systems emanate outward from the park to eventually fade into the fabric of a remarkably chaotic urban landscape.

Tim Long: Daniel Burnham’s Enduring Vision for the Phillipines will be on view from Sept. 5, 2009, to January 10, 2010, in the City Gallery at the Historic Water Tower, 806 N. Michigan Avenue. The City Gallery is open seven days a week, Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 6:30 pm, and Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm. The gallery is closed on all holidays. Admission is free.

A public opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, from 5-7 pm.

Tim Long: Daniel Burnham’s Enduring Vision for the Philippines is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs. The project is supported in part by Columbia College Chicago and a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Established in 1999, the City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower is a unique exhibition space dedicated to presenting Chicago-themed photographic work and other photo-based work by Chicago photographers and artists. For more information on Tim Long: Daniel Burnham’s Enduring Vision for the Philippines and other Department of Cultural Affairs exhibitions, the public can visit explorechicago.org or call 312-744-6630. (TTY: 312-744-2947).
