Mexican TV network: car explodes next to office (AP)

MEXICO CITY – A major Mexican television network says a car has exploded in front of its offices in a northern state where officials are investigating the massacre of 72 Central and South American migrants. The Televisa network reports that the explosion happened early Friday in front of its offices in the capital of Tamaulipas, the same state where the bodies were found earlier this week on a ranch believed to be operated by drug traffickers.

LONDON – Shares in BP PLC opened 5.5 percent higher in London Friday after the oil company reported encouraging early signs of progress in stopping the Gulf of Mexico oil leak. The oil company’s shares rose to 424 pence ($6.54) on the London Stock Exchange.

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – The sound of an explosion was heard near Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday, AFP journalists at the scene said. The explosion was heard at the Main Press Centre, 400 metres from the stadium, followed by a shockwave, but there was no immediate indication of what was the cause of the explosion.

BOGOTA, Colombia – A coal mine explosion in northwestern Colombia killed at least 16 miners and left dozens trapped more than 10 hours later, President Alvaro Uribe said Thursday. The Wednesday night explosion at the San Fernando mine, believed to have been caused by a buildup of methane gas, collapsed part of an access tunnel that is more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) long and drops to a depth of 500 feet (150 meters), said provincial disaster coordinator John Rendon.

CLEBURNE, Texas – A large natural gas line in north Texas erupted Monday after utility workers accidentally hit the line, sending a massive fireball into the air and killing one worker, officials said.
