BRUSSELS – Germany and France are facing an uphill battle Thursday to convince European leaders to adopt new rules they say are needed to prevent another government debt crisis. At a summit of EU leaders in Brussels, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy are pushing for changes to EU treaties that would take away voting rights form repeated overspenders and allow for an orderly default of highly indebted countries.

PARIS (AFP) – Substitutes Loic Remy and Yoann Gourcuff struck late goals to give France a 2-0 win at home to Romania on Saturday that sent them top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group. Marseille forward Remy rapped a low shot into the bottom-left corner in the 83rd minute, at the end of a game the hosts had dominated, before Gourcuff swept home a cutback from debutant Dimitri Payet in injury time.
