Officials: Cause of Macomb square fire not suspicious
The battle against a fire on the Macomb square entered its third day Friday as crews cooled hot spots and removed debris and investigators stopped looking for the cause.
Macomb Fire Chief Andy Taylor said his department, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the insurance companies affected have concluded the fire’s cause was undetermined but not suspicious.
“There’s just nothing there for us to look at,” he said.
A building on the south side of the square caught fire Wednesday night. The fire destroyed the building, which housed Chelsea’s Hallmark and Vision Consultants Ltd., and damaged the adjoining Citizens Bank and Terrill Title.
Taylor said the scene was excavated so firefighters could put out the rest of the smoking debris.
