SYDNEY (AFP) – A planned multi-billion dollar merger of the Sydney and Singapore stock exchanges faced a fierce political backlash Tuesday, as a senior Treasury official warned the deal also posed “regulatory issues”. Greens leader Bob Brown, a key ally of Australia’s fragile ruling coalition, expressed strong opposition over Singapore’s “appalling” rights record, while a maverick cross-bencher said he didn’t want to live in a country of “serfs”.

NEW YORK – Shares of Adobe soared in heavy trading Thursday on a report that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer discussed a possible buyout of the company. A report posted in the “Bits” blog of The New York Times said Ballmer recently met with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen to talk about Apple’s control of the cell phone market and how Microsoft and Adobe could work together to fend off the iPhone maker.

Nearly one in three who bought a smartphone in the past six months snapped up an Android handset, according to a new survey from Nielsen, leaving the iPhone and BlackBerry handsets to battle it out for second place.
