“The Situation,” GQ senior editor Dan Fierman told PopEater a few weeks ago. “Lord knows, you can’t talk about 2010 without addressing The Situation.”

Fierman was speaking about the magazine’s Men of the Year issue, and possibly the first piece of long-form journalism expressly devoted to figuring out the man, the myth, the legend, The Situation.

Now that profile — with staff writer Alex Pappademas pegging Sitch as “totally dedicated to the job of being a famous person” — is on GQ.com.

The Situation on dreams:

“I always had dreams, my whole life, of being somebody special. Someone out in the world that everybody knew of and everybody liked. Somebody unique. Even when I was down on my luck, in my head I still had those dreams. Sometimes in people’s lives, when bad stuff happens, their dreams just die, and they end up settling. I guess that’s their decision, maybe, because they didn’t believe in their dreams or forgot their dreams. My dreams never died.”

The Situation on life as a reality TV sensation:

“The scrutiny. And the microscope. Obviously it’s a blessing — the women and the money and the fame, but at the same time it’s — it’s actually very lonely. Very lonely. When you’re doing so well, when you have the year that I had, it’s hard to talk to people about it, because they think you’re being cocky. Plus, when it comes to women, y’know, obviously, they’re throwing themselves at you — but for what reasons, you know what I mean?”

The Situation on life after ‘Jersey’:

“I understand that there’s going to be a shelf life for ‘Jersey Shore.’ What I’m trying to do is build a castle, so that when that shelf life falls off, I’ll be able to move forward in this field in an efficient and positive way. We’re fortunate enough that the business is a multimillion-dollar enterprise, but we would like to make it grow. At the end of next year, I want it to be a billion-dollar brand.”

The Situation on “smushing” on-camera:

“It’s not easy or comfortable, knowing that people are watching you have sex. Even though you’re under the covers — it’s still uncomfortable. And it’s uncomfortable for the girl. You have to be so on point with your game to even get with a girl on-camera, let alone have sex. It’s very hard. I tried to get away from the cameras at times, but they catch up with you. They’ll put an extra two people on me, or they’ll put the fastest person on me.”

Leo DiCaprio met The Situation and reportedly said:

“GTL all day, baby.”

(CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Over the past year, Kate Gosselin has come full circle in the court of public opinion. Around this time last year, most people thought of her as the shrewish mother of eight who was constantly nagging and snapping at her laid-back husband, Jon. As soon as they divorced last summer and Jon started dating a string of questionable 20-somethings, Kate became the sane and stable one to Jon’s man-boy.

Then, Kate appeared on “Dancing with the Stars,” and again she became the shrew, as rumors flew that she was nasty to her fellow cast members behind the scenes. Well, I’m going to say something controversial. I like Kate Gosselin.

I think she’s smart and appreciate her wry, barely-there sense of humor. I think she’s handled herself with restraint and class for the past year while dealing with the end of her marriage under the tabloid microscope. I appreciate how open she is about her emotions, and how hard it is to move on.

And while millions will be watching when “Kate Plus 8″ premieres on Sunday, I’m looking forward to having a second dose of Kate on television with her brand-new reality show, “Twist of Kate,” coming to TLC soon. Here are 10 reasons I’ll be watching.

1. Kate has the best name ever. Not that I’m biased.

2. The concept of the show is a touch schmaltzy, but interesting. Kate takes a letter from a fan struggling through some challenge and visits them to essentially live their lives, meeting their family and doing their job. “She will be in that person’s shoes. And more often than not, it’s not going to be terribly comfortable for her,” TLC chief Eileen O’Neill told USA Today.

3. Kate wrote in a blog post today, “I look forward to being dropped into the lives of interesting and unique people and families. … Kate on the back of a trash truck, anyone?” Is she really going to be a garbage collector for an episode? Need. To. See. That.

4. OK, fine, I want to see what her hair will look like. Will she keep the extensions or go back to her signature porcupine reverse-mullet?

5. We also know that in one episode, according to local North Carolina press, she will be a waitress at Finch’s Restaurant. She was spotted filming in Raleigh, North Carolina, in December. Will she be able to deal with rude diners without sending them to time-out?

6. It’ll be nice to see Kate get a break from caring for eight kids. Perhaps we’ll get to see her real personality rather than the on-edge OCD mom?

7. Perhaps during one of the 12 episodes airing this summer, Kate will meet a guy. How nice it would be to see her out on a date.

8. That said, we’re thankful she’s not the next “Bachelorette.” We’re glad she decided to go this route instead of straight to a dating show.

9. It’ll be fun to guess which life she test-drives next. Here’s hoping that she gets to be a circus performer. Or maybe she could put her “Dancing with the Stars” skills to use, and visit a struggling exotic dancer?

10. Hey, it’s better than a show about her ex Jon Gosselin.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he wants to review a remarkable $500 million offer from ComEd.

The power company, a unit of Exelon Corp., is offering to give Illinois $500 million to help fill the state’s massive budget deficit in exchange for guaranteed future profits on electrical rates.

Quinn said Wednesday he doubts such a complicated proposal can be done before the spring legislative session wraps up this week.

But the Chicago Democrat did not reject the idea and says he wants to go over it with a microscope.

Consumer advocates criticize the proposal as bad for ComEd customers.

The Citizens Utility Board is against it, and so is <entity ref="#MnP29RH23BGXl8h4XWfsEA">Attorney General Lisa Madigan</entity>.

New imaging technology using one of the world’s smallest flexible microscopes enables physicians to look–at the cellular level–at living, moving tissue in the lungs and gastrointestinal tract so they can make a rapid diagnosis or carefully select tissue for biopsy.

With the probe-based, confocal, laser-endomicroscopy system known as Cellvizio®, which is used through a standard endoscope or bronchoscope, University of Chicago physicians can examine tissue in the gastrointestinal tract or look deep into the lungs to examine and assess early stages of disease.

With magnification 500 to 1,000 times that of a standard scope and 10 to 50 times that of a magnifying scope, the Cellvizio system, one of about 40 in the United States, can help doctors distinguish between normal and cancerous tissue without taking samples.

If they do need samples, the probe helps them collect exactly the tissue they need for a biopsy rather than extracting multiple samples from the general vicinity of suspected disease.

“Until now, if we found suspicious tissue during a diagnostic procedure, we had to take out tissue almost randomly and send it to a laboratory for analysis,” said Irving Waxman, MD, professor of medicine and surgery at the University of Chicago, the first center in Illinois to use the system.

“This meant that cancerous tissue could be missed.”

“With this scope,” said Waxman, “we can pinpoint abnormal tissue during the initial diagnostic exam, remove it, and then go back to be certain that we got what we needed.”

The tiny microscope, produced by Mauna Kea Technologies of Paris, France, (known as Cellvizio in the U.S.) is approved by the Food & Drug Administration for use in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. It consists of a laser light system coupled with a miniprobe made of tens of thousands of individual optical fibers capped by microlenses.

The scope is only 2.5 mm in diameter, small enough to pass through accessory channels on most standard GI or pulmonary scopes. Specialists worldwide have used the device for more than 3,000 procedures to date.

The tiny flexible device is inserted through a channel in a standard scope. The tip is placed on the tissue to be examined. It sends back 12 high-resolution video images per second.

By adjusting the focus, the probe can also provide clear, detailed images of tissue slightly beneath the surface.

Recent studies have demonstrated the value of the technology in multiple areas. “We currently use it to identify precancerous areas in Barrett’s esophagus (the major risk factor for esophageal cancer) for improved detection and targeting of minimally invasive endoscopic therapy,” said Vani Konda, MD, instructor of medicine at the University of Chicago.

“The technology can also be applied in the colon, bile duct and pancreas to try to differentiate cancer from inflammatory (benign) disorders.”

The microscope does a good job of catching early cancers and diagnosing them immediately, without having to wait for a pathology report, according to Mauna Kea Chief Executive Sacha Loiseau. “It’s especially useful in getting into tiny bile ducts,” he adds.

“Detailed microscopic images of the esophagus or the bile ducts can help us reduce the risk of biopsy-related complications,” said Waxman. “By identifying in vivo the area of interest we can move right then to follow with a therapeutic application.”

“The tiny miniprobe can also be inserted through the bronchoscope and extended well into the lungs, even to the smaller branches of the bronchial tree,” said pulmonologist Kyle Hogarth, MD, FCCP, assistant professor of medicine and director of bronchoscopy at the University of Chicago.

“Better visualization could help us perform fewer, more-targeted biopsies,” he said. “It lets us examine and sample tissues that were previously inaccessible without surgery.”
