Democrats seek bipartisan support for borrowing measure

By Melissa Leu     Illinois Statehouse News SPRINGFIELD — Illinois lawmakers will have their work cut out for them when they reconvene Tuesday as they work to finally pay off the state’s $6.6 billion in backlogged bills to vendors. In its current form, Senate Bill 3  calls for borrowing $8.75 billion to catch up on payments to schools and universities, social service providers,  employee health insurance and corporate tax refunds.

November 9, 2010 SPRINGFIELD  –  Illinois Republicans couldn’t take the governor’s mansion or take-over the General Assembly, but the GOP may still have a say in the next state budget. Comptroller-elect Judy Baar Topinka and Treasurer-elect Dan Rutherford both say they are going to hold the line on borrowing.  Both need to sign-off on any short-term borrowing from Governor Pat Quinn’s office.  And Rutherford says before he signs, he wants some answers.

November 9, 2010 SPRINGFIELD  –  Illinois lawmakers are looking at a choice between raising your taxes or opening a few new casinos, but Governor Pat Quinn is not so sure. There are a flood of gambling plans surfacing at the Illinois Capitol ahead of next week’s fall veto session.  But Quinn says he’s still looking at a tax hike and isn’t excited about more casinos.
