Detroit features an all-ensemble cast including Kevin Anderson, Kate Arrington, Ian Barford, Robert Breuler and Laurie Metcalf.

Picture-perfect couple Ben and Mary fire up the grill to welcome the new neighbors who’ve moved into the long-empty house next door.

Three barbeques later, the fledgling friendship veers out of control, shattering Ben and Mary’s carefully maintained semblance of success—with comic, unexpected consequences.

“Ruined” (Goodman Theatre in a co-production with Manhattan Theatre Club), the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama that harrowingly scrutinizes the state of women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, shared the honor.

TimeLine Theatre’s heralded production of “The History Boys” was awarded top honors in the Production-Play (Midsize) category.

The Court Theatre’s much-lauded staging of “Caroline, or Change” walked away with several spumante statues, including Production-Musical (Large), Director-Musical (Charles Newell), and Actress in a Principal Role-Musical (E. Faye Butler).

The Jeff committee presented special decorations to both The Second City (Trubute Award) and Director-Producer William Pullinsi for over a half-century’s work in the Chicago theatre districts. The Second City will soon present a celebration of its 50th year in performance December 11-13 at its Piper’s Alley homestead.

As is custom for the yearly festivities, the Jeff Committee imbued its ceremony with a starry array of performances. Nominated play productions were presented by individual video features, while the 11 nominated musicals and revues graced the stage at the Northshore Center for the Performing Arts in live performance.

The celebration was directed by Michael Weber, produced by Jeff Equity Chair Diane Hires, and hosted by Chicago stage actors Elizabeth Ledo and Rob Lindley.

The Jeff Awards has been honoring Chicago theatre artists annually since it was established in 1968.

With up to 50 members representing a wide variety of backgrounds in theatre, the Jeff Awards is committed to celebrating the vitality of Chicago area theatre by recognizing excellence through its recommendations, awards, and honors.

NPR radio personality, author and performance artist Joe Frank appears at Steppenwolf for a one-night-only performance of Is There Something Wrong?: An Evening of Spoken Word and Music on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at 8pm in the Steppenwolf Downstairs Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted.

Tickets are currently on sale.

Joe Frank takes the Steppenwolf’s stage for an evening of spoken word and music in one of his most provocative pieces yet.

The depth of his work – essentially a philosophical inquiry – is what gives it its real significance. Beneath every surreal flourish is a search for something to believe in: a yearning for love, a quest for self-acceptance.

While one critic has called Frank “the most brilliant comic in America,” another has described Frank’s stories as “inspired weirdness that feeds on pathos and irony.” Others have used the words “hypnotic,” “psychotic,” “disturbing” and “terrifying.” All agree that Frank unfailingly manages to confound his audience’s expectations.

Cited as a source of inspiration by artists as diverse as Ira Glass, Charlie Kaufman and Beck, Frank’s shows are invariably laced with surreal comedy.

About Joe Frank

Joe Frank began his radio career in 1977 at WBAI, in New York City, and later served as co-anchor of National Public Radio’s All Things Considered in 1978.

Over the course of the next three decades he produced over 200 radio programs for KCRW and National Public Radio.

A Guggenheim Fellow, Frank has been honored with many major industry awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award, two Major Armstrong Awards and two Corporation for Public Broadcasting Awards for radio drama.

Over the years, Frank’s distinctive approach to making radio has inspired producers around the world to experiment with and stretch the medium beyond traditional boundaries.

Joe Frank’s regular weekly one-hour radio show airs in Chicago on WBEZ Sunday nights at 11pm.

NPR radio personality, author and performance artist Joe Frank appears at Steppenwolf for a one night only performance of Is There Something Wrong?: An Evening of Spoken Word and Music on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at 8pm in the Steppenwolf Downstairs Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted St.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 2 at 11am.

While one critic has called Frank “the most brilliant comic in America,” another has described Frank’s stories as “inspired weirdness that feeds on pathos and irony.” Others have used the words “hypnotic,” “psychotic,” “disturbing” and “terrifying.”

All agree that Frank unfailingly manages to confound his audience’s expectations. Cited as a source of inspiration by artists as diverse as Ira Glass, Charlie Kaufman and Beck, Frank’s shows are invariably laced with surreal comedy.

Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company is pleased to announce it has been named one of the nation’s Top Small Workplaces by the Wall Street Journal and Winning Workplaces. Steppenwolf is one of 15 winners announced today from a pool of 330 initial applicants and 35 finalists.

“We are honored to be the first arts organization in the U.S. to receive this distinguished recognition,” comments Steppenwolf’s Executive Director David Hawkanson. “This is a tribute to the entire Steppenwolf family – our talented artists, dedicated administrators, extraordinary production team and ambitious apprentices. We’ve worked very hard as a team to create an exceptional work environment – and will continue to make it a top priority,” adds Hawkanson.

Steppenwolf’s Visiting Companies Initiative is pleased to announce three productions by Dog & Pony Theatre Company, Pavement Group and Thirteen Pocket to be presented in rotating repertory for a ten-week run beginning February 2010 in Steppenwolf’s Merle Reskin Garage Theatre, 1624 N. Halsted.

“We are thrilled to welcome these three innovative Chicago theatre companies to produce in a new rotating repertory model under the Visiting Company Initiative,” comments Artistic Director Martha Lavey. “In response to the current challenges facing emerging theatre companies, we are happy to be handing over Steppenwolf’s Garage Theatre as a collaborative space for their work. We also look forward to being in conversation with these emerging artists and their audiences next season as the productions at Steppenwolf, including those of these companies in residence, explore the power of belief and its ability to illuminate what’s authentic in our lives,” adds Lavey.

Dog & Pony Theatre Company presents “The Twins Would Like To Say”
a new play written and directed by Seth Bockley and Devon de Mayo

A promenade performance that breathes life into the extraordinary true story of identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons. The young girls made a secret and powerful pact that went unbroken for over 20 years: speak to no adult, decide everything together, do everything in unison. But in the privacy of their room, the girls’ fantasy life blossomed as they wrote hyper-kinetic novels of teenage lust and rebellion.

Pavement Group presents “punkplay”
by Gregory Moss, directed by David Perez

A sonic mix-tape frames the story of two boys stuck in suburban 80′s adolescence. When Duck and Mickey discover punk roc, it’s like nothing they’ve ever heard: it’s fast, it’s hot and it’s angry. The boys find punk in all its righteous fury a self-defining belief system in a world where everyone thinks, looks and talks the same.

Thirteen Pocket presents “Adore”
written and directed by Stephen Louis Grush

Two desperate men find each other over the internet, beginning a complex and strange relationship until finally they meet… both fulfilling each other’s ultimate fantasies. Based on the disturbing true events that made headlines, Adore explores how self-loathing leads these two men through a sexual underworld of fetish chat rooms and cannibalism, as they search for a kind of love incomprehensible to the rest of society.

About The Companies:

Founded in 2002, Dog & Pony Theatre Company is committed to producing vital works by new and emerging playwrights whose use of language and convention are daring and highly imaginative. As an eclectic collective of artists with backgrounds in theatre, public broadcasting, political activism and religious studies, Dog & Pony is particularly drawn to work with social and cultural relevance. Krissy Vanderwarker, Artistic Director. dogandponychicago.org.

Pavement Group commits itself to providing dynamic performance opportunities for the next generation of theatre artists, arts managers and audiences. We dedicate ourselves to new plays. Pavement Group endeavors to make contact with an audience previously unspoken to. The company strives to lay the foundation-both pragmatic and institutional-that fosters fresh plays and makes contact with new audiences. Through development, dramaturgy, and the pairing of playwrights and directors, Pavement Group provides the artistic and practical atmosphere needed for great plays to reach fruition. David Perez, Aristic Director. pavementgroup.org.

Thirteen Pocket is a vehicle for the development and offering of original works. We will explore all mediums of artistic communication in the pursuit of a more specific and individual connection with as many members of our community as possible. With this endeavor, we plan to investigate the necessity of all art forms and their ability to evoke change. Our want is to assault apathy with a deep conviction, and to ignite in those around us the need for action. Stephen Louis Grush, Artistic Director.
thirteenpocket.com.

About Steppenwolf’s Visiting Companies Initiative

Steppenwolf’s Visiting Companies Initiative provides the opportunity for other theater companies to present work in all three of Steppenwolf’s theaters. These residencies are supported by the artists and staff at Steppenwolf and help create relationships with visiting companies, enriching the artistic dialogue among its artists and audiences.

Support for this project comes through the “Leading for the Future Initiative,” a program of the Nonprofit Finance Fund, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Committed to the principle of ensemble performance through the collaboration of a company of actors, directors and playwrights, Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s mission is to advance the vitality and diversity of American theater by nurturing artists, encouraging repeatable creative relationships and contributing new works to the national canon.

The First Look Repertory of New Work also includes First Look 101, a unique three-month experience that takes enrolled participants on a backstage journey through all aspects of the new play development process – from the first rehearsal to the final performance. The program is limited to 101 members and is open to anyone interested in, and wanting to know more about, creating new plays. First Look 101 runs June 1, 2009 – August 9, 2009. This year’s First Look 101 is SOLD OUT.

First Look Repertory of New Work is a developmental process that culminates in performance before an audience, rather than in a staged reading or workshop presentation. Scripts undergo significant revision during the workshop/rehearsal process and may be revised even after being publicly presented during First Look. They are presented with full, if minimal, design support because in Steppenwolf’s view, the design process is an integral aspect of play development. The intent is to prime the plays for future production at other theaters across the country.

First Look has gained both local and national recognition since its inception in 2005. Seven of the twelve plays presented during First Look’s first four seasons have enjoyed subsequent world premieres at other theaters, including: Jason Wells’ Perfect Mendacity produced at Asolo Repertory Theatre in Florida; Wells’ Men of Tortuga also at Asolo (followed by a second production at Profiles Theater in Chicago); Butcher of Baraboo by Marisa Wegrzyn produced by 2econd Stage Theatre in New York; 100 Saints You Should Know by Kate Fodor produced by Playwrights Horizons in New York; Spare Change by Mia McCullough produced by Stage Left Theatre in Chicago; Gary by Melinda Lopez produced by Boston Playwrights’ Theatre in Massachusetts; and When The Messenger is Hot by Laura Eason produced by 59E59 Theaters in New York.

Individual tickets to First Look Repertory of New Work cost $20. A First Look Pass to all three plays is available for $45. Tickets are available at www.steppenwolf.org or by calling Audience Services at 312-335-1650. First Look 101 costs $75 ($45 for students with valid ID) and includes access to all First Look 101 events, plus tickets to all three First Look Repertory productions. This year’s First Look 101 is SOLD OUT.

Theatre, film, television and music star Michael McKean will reprise his role as donut shop owner Arthur Przybyszewski in the Broadway premiere of Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s new American play Superior Donuts, by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning ensemble member Tracy Letts, directed by ensemble member Tina Landau.

Mr. McKean originated the role during Superior Donuts’ sold-out, world premiere at Steppenwolf last summer. Full casting will be announced shortly.

Superior Donuts will follow Letts’ Tony Award-winning play August: Osage County (which also had its world-premiere at Steppenwolf) into The Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street) with previews beginning Wednesday, September 16, 2009 and an official opening on Thursday, October 1, 2009. Tickets for Superior Donuts are on sale through Telecharge.com or by calling 212-239-6200. The Music Theatre box office will open on Wednesday, August 19, 2009.

Arthur Przybyszewski owns a decrepit donut shop in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Franco Wicks, a black teenager who is his only employee, wants to change the shop for the better. This provocative comedy, set in the heart of one of Chicago’s most diverse communities, explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship.

Michael McKean most recently appeared on Broadway in the critically acclaimed 2008 revival of Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming, for which he received a Drama Desk award for Best Ensemble. His other Broadway credits include the 2006 Tony Award winning revival of The Pajama Game, Accomplice (Theatre World Award) and Hairspray. Off-Broadway: Woody Allen’s A Second Hand Memory. London: Love Song. TV: Series regular on Laverne & Shirley, Dream On, Sessions, Tracy Takes On, Saturday Night Live, Primetime Glick. Guest appearances include Friends, The X Files, The Simpsons, Law & Order, Smallville, Alias, Boston Legal. Film: This is Spinal Tap (also co-wrote), Clue, Coneheads, The Brady Bunch Movie, True Crime, Jack, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, Joshua, The Grand, many more. Composed music for several of the above and co-wrote (with Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy) the Grammy-winning theme to A Mighty Wind and the Oscar-nominated “A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow,” written with wife Annette O’Toole.

Tracy Letts (Playwright) received the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for best Play for his critically-acclaimed play August: Osage County, which played for more than a year and a half on Broadway following sold-out runs at Steppenwolf in 2007 and the National Theatre in London in 2008. Mr. Letts is also the author of Man from Nebraska, which was produced at Steppenwolf in 2003 and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize; Killer Joe, which has been produced in Chicago, London and New York; and Bug, which has played in New York, Chicago and London.

Tina Landau (Director) most recently directed The Tempest and Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where she is an ensemble member, as well as The Time of Your Life (also Seattle Rep, A.C.T.), The Diary of Anne Frank, The Cherry Orchard, and Charles Mee’s Berlin Circle and Time to Burn, among others. She recently directed the world premieres of Tarell McCraney’s In the Red and Brown Water at the Alliance and McCarter Theaters, Paula Vogel’s A Civil War Christmas at Long Wharf Theatre and the Off-Broadway premiere of McCraney’s Wig Out! at the Vineyard Theatre. Tina’s work as a writer and director include Of Thee I Sing (Paper Mill Playhouse), Beauty (La Jolla Playhouse), Space (Steppenwolf, NY’s Public Theatre, Mark Taper Forum), Stonewall (En Garde Arts), 1969 (Actors Theater of Louisville), Floyd Collins with composer Adam Guettel (Playwrights Horizons, Prince Music Theatre, Old Globe, the Goodman) and Dream True with composer Ricky Ian Gordon (Vineyard Theater). Other directing credits include Iphigenia 2.0 (Signature), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (McCarter/PaperMill), and the Broadway revival of Bells Are Ringing. Ms. Landau teaches at Yale School of Drama and is the co-author, with Anne Bogart, of The Viewpoints Book.

The Steppenwolf production of Superior Donuts is produced on Broadway by Jeffrey Richards, Jean Doumanian, Steve Traxler and Jerry Frankel, the producing team behind Steppenwolf’s August: Osage County.
