IDOT and Law Enforcement Agencies Partner to Boost Safety, Crack Down on Traffic Violators over Thanksgiving Weekend – State and Local Police to Conduct Hundreds of Enforcement Zones, Numerous Roadside Safety Checks
SPRINGFIELD- With heavy traffic expected over Thanksgiving weekend and to boost roadway safety, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) today kicked off the Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization with Illinois State Police (ISP) and local law enforcement agencies statewide. By the end of the weekend, Illinois motorists could see over 1,700 safety belt enforcement zones and 40 roadside safety checks conducted by over 200 law enforcement agencies, all with a special focus on safety belt violations and impaired driving during nighttime hours.
IDOT, State Police, AAA and Evenflo Announce Seat Check Saturday as Part of National Child Passenger Safety Week – More Than 80 Free Child Seat Checks Planned Across the State
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), State Police, AAA, Evenflo and St. John’s Hospital today announced Seat Check Saturday and called on all parents and caregivers to ensure children are properly restrained in correctly installed child safety seats when traveling on Illinois roadways. On Saturday, September 24, over 80 free child safety seat checks will take place in Illinois providing parents with hands-on training from 682 certified child passenger safety (CPS) technicians.
IDOT Unveils 2011-2012 Highway Map at Illinois State Fair
SPRINGFIELD – Acting Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider today announced new state highway maps are available, and are being released at the 2011 Illinois State Fair. “IDOT understands the importance of providing the most up to date information to motorists and visitors who consistently utilize and rely upon Illinois roadways,” said Acting Secretary Schneider. “A state road map is a valuable resource we believe all drivers should have in their vehicle while traveling.” The maps are free to the public.
IDOT Announces Construction Lane Closures over 4th of July Weekend – Suspension of Road Work Aimed to Ease Congestion, Improve Traffic Flow and Safety
SPRINGFIELD – With thousands of motorists expected to travel on state roadways over the 4th of July holiday weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that road work will be suspended where possible for the weekend to reduce potential congestion and improve traffic flow. The advance notice of lane closures for the holiday weekend is designed to aid motorists’ travel plans and improve safety. “Independence Day is often celebrated with friends and family usually traveling long distances to connect,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig.
IDOT Announces 2011 Operation Teen Safe Driving Winners – Illinois Teen Fatalities Declining
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig, Secretary of State Jesse White, the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, Illinois State Police (ISP), Ford Motor Company Fund and The Allstate Foundation today announced the winning schools from each region under the 2011 Operation Teen Safe Driving Program. The winners were selected for their creativity and imagination in developing programs to educate their peers on the dangers of unsafe driving practices.

Joseph DiJohn, 67, director of the Metropolitan Transportation Support Initiative at the University of Illinois at Chicago, died March 19 after battling lung cancer for several months. DiJohn was chief executive officer of Pace, the suburban bus system, when he began teaching as an adjunct lecturer in the UIC College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs in 1988.
