December 6, 2011

A three-drug combination treatment for the blood cancer multiple myeloma compares favorably to the best established therapy for newly diagnosed patients, according to a multi-center study led by Andrzej Jakubowiak, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and director of the multiple myeloma program at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Jakubowiak will present final results of the phase I-II study on Dec. 12, 2011, at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Diego, Calif. The initial results from phase I of this study were presented at the ASH Meeting 2010 and were selected for the Best of ASH 2010 session.

The combination includes a newer investigational medicine called carfilzomib combined with two standard medications: lenalidomide, an analogue of thalidomide, and low-dose dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory with anti-cancer properties.

“This combination appears to deliver everything we expected and more,” said Jakubowiak, who came to the University of Chicago this fall from the University of Michigan. “We have seen excellent efficacy — the best reported to date — without the neurotoxicity that has been problematic with other drug combinations.”

Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that arises in plasma cells, the bone marrow component that produces antibodies. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 20,520 Americans will be diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2011 and 10,610 will die from the disease.

The research team enrolled 53 people at three different carfilzomib dose levels. Most patients responded quickly to the combination and continued to improve with additional treatment cycles.

After at least one 28-day cycle, 94 percent had a partial response — at least a 50 percent reduction of the disease. After at least four cycles, all patients had a partial response. After 12 cycles or more, 100 percent of patients had a “very-good partial response,” defined as a 90 percent reduction of disease, and four out of five patients showed little or no sign of cancer.

“These response rates are higher than those achieved by the best established regimens for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma,” Jakubowiak said.

After a median follow-up of nine and a half months, all patients were alive and only one patient’s cancer had progressed. The three-drug combination was overall well-tolerated, with few serious side effects. The side effect that typically limits extended treatment for multiple myeloma — peripheral neuropathy, numbness or tingling of the fingers and toes that can progress to significant pain — was infrequent and mild.

The study included patients who were eligible for a bone marrow transplant using their own stem cells, but it offered a deferred-transplant approach and only two patients chose that option. Most patients remained on the three-drug treatment and achieved responses similar to or better than those observed after a stem cell transplant. They are still eligible for a stem cell transplant if their disease becomes resistant to the drug combination.

“Newly diagnosed myeloma is most sensitive to treatment,” Jakubowiak said. “A great and sustained response in the initial phase of treatment, as is the case in this study, typically projects longer remission, and possibly longer overall survival.”

Carfilzomib has recently emerged as an important experimental medicine in the treatment of multiple myeloma. It is a proteasome inhibitor, a drug that interferes with the mechanism that cells use to get rid of unneeded or defective proteins. Because myeloma cells develop from antibody-producing white blood cells, they are “protein factories.” Blocking their efforts to get rid of dysfunctional proteins can lead to cell death.

The Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium, Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc., Celgene Corp. and the University of Michigan funded the study.

Additional authors include Dominik Dytfeld, Tara B. Anderson, Brian Nordgren, Daniel Lebovic, Kent Griffith, K Detweiler-Short, Terri Jobkar, Diane Durecki, Ammar Al-Zoubi, Daniel Couriel, and Melissa Mietzel from the University of Michigan; Sundar Jagannath from Mt. Vesole from Hackensack University Medical Center; Keith Stockerl-Goldstein and Ravi Vij from Washington University School of Medicine; Robert Ott and Sandra Wear from the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium; Mohamad Hussain from Celgene Corp.; and Homa Yeganegi from Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc.

DEERFIELD, Ill., Nov. 1, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ – Takeda Global Research & Development Center, Inc., (Takeda) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has assigned a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date of January 25, 2012 for the review of its investigational type 2 diabetes therapy alogliptin, and the fixed-dose combination therapy alogliptin/pioglitazone, which combines alogliptin with pioglitazone in a single tablet.

Currently, the FDA is reviewing the new drug applications (NDA) for the investigational therapies, which were resubmitted on July 25, 2011; the FDA has categorized these as Class 2 responses, requiring up to six months for review.Alogliptin is a selective dipeptidyl peptidase IV inhibitor (DPP-4i) under investigation in the United States (U.S.) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Discovered by Takeda San Diego, Inc., alogliptin is designed to slow the inactivation of incretin hormones GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide), which play a role in regulating blood glucose levels. Pioglitazone was approved in 1999 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. If approved, alogliptin/pioglitazone will be the first type 2 diabetes treatment option in the U.S. to include both a DPP-4 inhibitor and a thiazolidinedione (TZD) in a single tablet.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, a staggering 285 million individuals were living with diabetes worldwide in 2010.

“As recent figures indicate that diabetes continues to be a serious global health challenge, Takeda remains deeply committed to researching new and important therapeutic options for patients living with type 2 diabetes,” said David Recker, M.D., senior vice president, clinical science, Takeda Global Research & Development Center. “Phase 3 studies have demonstrated that the combination of alogliptin with pioglitazone produced significant improvements in glycemic control, as compared to individual monotherapy. If approved, alogliptin/pioglitazone will be the first type 2 diabetes therapy in the U.S. to combine a DPP-4 inhibitor with a thiazolidinedione in a single tablet.”

Common adverse events (greater than or equal to 5%) identified in the alogliptin phase 3 program included headache, urinary tract infection, nasopharyngitis, and upper respiratory tract infection. In the alogliptin/pioglitazone phase 3 program, the common adverse events (greater than or equal to 5%) identified included nasopharyngitis, back pain, urinary tract infection, and influenza.

About Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and has reached epidemic proportions globally. Almost 26 million Americans currently live with diabetes, and at least seven million are unaware that they have it. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive and chronic condition and patients should work with a health care professional to manage and monitor their disease. In addition to diet and exercise, patients often need to take medication in order to help manage glucose control. The global health care expenditures to treat and prevent diabetes and its complications were estimated at $376 billion in 2010. By 2030, this number is projected to exceed $490 billion.

About Alogliptin and Alogliptin/Pioglitazone

Alogliptin is a DPP-4i being investigated, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. DPP-4 inhibitors address insulin deficiency by slowing the inactivation of incretin hormones GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide). As a result, an increased amount of active incretins enables the pancreas to secrete insulin, thereby assisting in the management of blood glucose levels. An NDA for alogliptin was approved in April 2010 by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and the therapy is currently available under the brand name NESINA® in this market.

Alogliptin/pioglitazone is a fixed-dose combination therapy in development for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, which combines alogliptin and pioglitazone in a single tablet. Pioglitazone is a TZD that directly targets insulin resistance, a condition in which the body does not efficiently use the insulin it produces to control blood glucose levels, and is approved in adults for the treatment of type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. An NDA for the alogliptin/pioglitazone fixed-dose combination was approved in July 2011 by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and the therapy is currently available under the brand name LIOVEL® in this market.

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill., Oct. 27, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Advanced Dermatology LLC, is proud to announce that Amy Forman Taub, MD has been published in the October 2011 e-Edition of the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology (JCAD). JCAD is a highly respected monthly peer-reviewed publication for practicing dermatologists.

The paper, with coauthor Cara Beth Garretson, MD, is titled “Treatment of Acne Scars of Skin Types II to V by Sublative Fractional Bipolar Radiofrequency and Bipolar Radiofrequency Combined with Diode Laser.”

Background: Recent evidence has surfaced that devices that combine ablative with nonablative fractional technology are effective in treating acne scarring. A relatively new treatment uses fractionated bipolar radiofrequency energy, which has been shown to improve mild wrinkles, skin texture and smooth and tighten skin. This treatment — sublative rejuvenation — also has its advantages because it reduces down time and produces few side effects.

The study: Study participants (8 men and 12 women ages 30-50) received up to five treatments with sublative fractional bipolar radiofrequency and bipolar radiofrequency combined with diode laser. Treatments were directed to at least two areas (cheeks, forehead, perioral, and neck) with acne scars evaluated at four-week intervals.

The results: Acne scars improved significantly one month after three treatments and improvement persisted for at least 12 weeks after the fifth treatment. Improvement was effective in all skin types treated (from II to V) and treatment produced minimal downtime and no significant side effects.

CHICAGO, Oct. 26, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008 and nationally known eating disorders advocate, has joined Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center as community relations specialist.

(Photo: http://photos.CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM.com/prnh/20111026/CG92186)

(Logo: http://photos.CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM.com/prnh/20110727/CG42761LOGO)

“Since my own recovery, I am passionate about educating and empowering women to get the care they need to live amazing, productive and healthy lives,” said Haglund. “I see the same compassion and desire in the Timberline Knolls team and look forward to being a part of this work of restoring women to health.”

Haglund will work closely with colleges around the country, specifically sororities. According to a study published last year in the journal Sex Roles, women who join sororities are more likely to judge themselves on their appearances and display bulimic tendencies. A college student herself, Haglund hopes to serve as a role model for this group and to make a difference in their lives.

Timberline Knolls is a Chicago-based residential treatment center offering a nurturing environment of recovery for women ages 12 and older struggling to overcome eating disorders, trauma, substance abuse, mood disorders and co-occurring disorders. The center was founded in 2005 by a team of compassionate psychiatrists, psychologists and clinicians dedicated to helping adolescent girls and women achieve full lives.

“Timberline Knolls is a place of healing,” adds Haglund. ”Women and adolescent girls come to the center to find refuge and restoration, and when they leave, they have not only made huge strides in their healing, but they have learned the skills needed for long-term recovery.”

March 28, 2011

Many elderly men may undergo unnecessary prostate cancer screenings while men in their early fifties, who are more likely to benefit from early diagnosis and treatment, do not, according to a new study published March 28 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Surveys conducted in 2000 and 2005 show that nearly half of men in their seventies underwent PSA screening, a blood test that can detect early signs of prostate cancer, in the past year. This is almost double the screening rate of men in their fifties. Because prostate cancer tends to grow slowly, many men in their seventies and older will die of other causes before prostate cancer requires medical attention.

The new findings–by researchers from the University of Chicago Medical Center, Harvard University and Beth Israel Hospital in Boston–underscore a long-standing concern that overuse of PSA screening may lead to unnecessary treatment, which can cause complications such as incontinence, impotence or bowel dysfunction.

“Our findings show a high rate of elderly and sometimes ill men being inappropriately screened for prostate cancer,” said senior author Scott Eggener, MD, assistant professor of surgery at the University of Chicago. “We’re concerned these screenings may prompt cancer treatment among elderly men that ultimately has a very low likelihood of benefiting the patient and paradoxically can cause more harm than good.”

“We were also surprised to find that nearly three-quarters of men in their fifties were not screened within the past year,” he added. “These results emphasize the need for greater physician interaction and conversation about the merits and limitations of prostate cancer screening for men of all ages.”

While declines in prostate cancer metastases and death rates in the last 20 years coincide with widespread use of PSA-based screening, questions remain about its use. Recent studies provide conflicting evidence on whether routine PSA screening in the general population of men actually reduces the risk of dying from prostate cancer.

Based on these concerns, major organizations such as the American Cancer Society now encourage men who expect to live at least 10 years to talk with their doctor about the risks and benefits of screening, starting at age 50 for men with an average risk or at age 45 for men with higher risk.

In this study, the researchers examined results from health surveys of randomly selected households conducted in 2000 and 2005 as part of the federal government-sponsored National Health Interview Survey. The investigators calculated the estimated five-year life expectancy of each man over 40 who had received a PSA test.

They found that PSA screening rate was 24.0 percent in men ages 50 to 54. It increased with age until a peak of 45.5 percent in men ages 70 to 74. Screening rates then declined with age, with 24.6 percent of men 85 or older reporting being screened.

Among men who were 70 or older, the investigators did find that PSA screening was more common in men with a greater estimated five-year life expectancy. Approximately 47.3 percent of men who were unlikely to die in five years (an estimated chance of 15 percent or less) were screened, 39.2 percent of men with an intermediate chance (16 to 48 percent probability) of dying received screening, and 30.7 percent of those with the highest probability of death (48 percent or greater) in five years were screened.

Screening rates may reflect how frequently men visit primary care physicians, Eggener suggested. Older men tend to have more health problems that require doctor visits. This may result in more frequent PSA testing.

Physicians should be more selective in recommending PSA testing for older men, particularly those with a limited life expectancy, the authors suggest, and they should consider more routinely screening younger healthier men who are most likely to benefit from early prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Men are encouraged to talk with their doctor about their individual risk for prostate cancer, and about the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening.

“Excessive screening for prostate cancer in elderly men who have limited life expectancies in the United States results in unnecessary anxiety, diagnoses, overtreatment, treatment-related morbidity, and health care expenditures without meaningful clinical benefit,” the authors conclude. The note that about “three quarters of a million men with an estimated life expectancy of approximately 5 years received PSA screening in the year prior. These men are unlikely to reap a meaningful benefit.”

“The overuse of PSA testing, and as a result, the often unnecessary overtreatment of men with indolent prostate cancer that will most likely never bother them, remains a huge concern for oncologists, said Nicholas Vogelzang, MD, ASCO Cancer Communications Committee member and prostate cancer specialist. “This study reinforces the notion that accurately determining life expectancy, taking into consideration a variety of factors, including age and co-existing medical conditions, is often critical to deciding on appropriate screening and subsequent treatment of elderly men with prostate cancer.”

In a retrospective study, 231 MS patients (age range, 25 to 70 years old; 147 women, 84 men) underwent this endovascular treatment of the internal jugular and azygos veins with or without placement of a stent (a tiny mesh tube). “Our results show that such treatment is safe when performed in the hospital or on an outpatient basis—with 97 percent treated without incident,” Mandato noted. He added, “Our study, while not specifically evaluating the outcomes of this endovascular treatment, has shown that it can be safely performed, with only a minimal risk of significant complication. It is our hope that future prospective studies are performed to further assess the safety of this procedure.” Complications included abnormal heart rhythm in three patients and the immediate re-narrowing of treated veins in four patients. All but two of the patients were discharged within three hours of receiving this minimally invasive treatment.

About 500,000 people in the United States have MS, generally thought of as an incurable, disabling autoimmune disease in which a person’s body attacks its own cells. “There are few treatment options that truly improve the quality of life of those with the disease, and some of the current drug treatment options for MS carry significant risk,” said Mandato. In 2009, Paolo Zamboni, a doctor from Italy, published a study that suggested that a blockage in the veins that drain blood from the brain and spinal cord and return it to the heart (a condition called chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency or CCSVI) might contribute to MS and its symptoms. The idea is that if these veins were widened, blood flow may be improved, which may help lessen the severity of MS-related symptoms.

The Society of Interventional Radiology issued a position statement last fall supporting high-quality clinical research to determine the safety and effectiveness of interventional MS treatments, recognizing that the role of CCSVI in MS and its endovascular treatment by an interventional radiologist via angioplasty and/or stents to open up veins could be transformative for patients. “This is an entirely new approach to the treatment of patients with neurologic conditions, such as multiple sclerosis. The idea that there may be a venous component that causes some symptoms in patients with MS is a radical departure from current medical thinking,” said Gary P. Siskin, M.D., FSIR, an interventional radiologist and chair of the radiology department at Albany Medical Center and the co-chair of the SIR research consensus panel on MS that was held in October.

“It is important to understand that this is a new approach to MS. As a result, there is a healthy level of skepticism in both the neurology and interventional radiology communities about the condition, the treatment and the outcomes,” said Siskin. “Interventional radiologists have been performing venous angioplasty for decades and have established themselves as pioneers in this area of vascular intervention. Patients are learning about this therapy and the role of interventional radiology in venous angioplasty through the Internet. They are discussing it among themselves—through blogs and social networking sites—and then turning to interventional radiologists for this treatment,” he noted. “This is a new entity and one where researchers are clearly very early in their understanding of both the condition and the treatment,” added Siskin.

SIR’s position statement agrees with MS advocates, doctors and other caregivers that the use of any treatment (anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, interventional or other) in MS patients should be based on an individualized assessment of the patient’s disease status, his or her tolerance of previous therapies, the particular treatment’s scientific plausibility, and the strength and methodological quality of its supporting clinical evidence. “When conclusive evidence is lacking, SIR believes that these often difficult decisions are best made by individual patients, their families and their physicians,” notes the society’s position paper, “Interventional Endovascular Management of Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis: A Position Statement by the Society of Interventional Radiology, Endorsed by the Canadian Interventional Radiology Association.” SIR stresses the importance for MS patients to continue an ongoing dialogue with their neurologists to discuss their treatment care.

While the use of angioplasty and stents cannot be endorsed yet as a routine clinical treatment for MS, SIR agrees that the preliminary research is very promising and supports studies aimed at understanding the role of CCSVI in MS, at identifying methods to screen for the condition and at designing protocols for exploratory therapeutic trials. “If interventional therapy proves to be effective, MS patients should be treated by doctors who have specialized expertise and training in delivering image-guided venous treatments,” said Siskin. Interventional radiologists pioneered angioplasty and stent placements and use those treatments on a daily basis in thousands of patients with diverse venous conditions.

Mandato noted that research still needs to be done concerning patient selection, technique and the outcomes after this procedure, including improvement in symptoms and quality of life and the durability of the response.

About the Society of Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-ray, MRI and other imaging to advance a catheter in the body, such as in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease internally. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral arterial disease, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine. Today, interventional oncology is a growing specialty area of interventional radiology. Interventional radiologists can deliver treatments for cancer directly to the tumor without significant side effects or damage to nearby normal tissue.

Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists. Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Visit www.SIRweb.org.

The Society of Interventional Radiology is holding its 36th Annual Scientific Meeting March 26–31 at McCormick Place (West Building) in Chicago, Ill. The theme of the meeting is “IR Rising: Leading Image-guided Medicine,” chosen to reflect interventional radiology’s continued revolutionizing of modern medicine.

CHICAGO, March 24, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — When it comes to their teeth, Americans have strong feelings about keeping them. According to a January 2011 survey by the American Association of Endodontists, 70 percent of Americans want to avoid losing their natural teeth. One way to help people maintain their natural teeth is through root canal treatment. During Root Canal Awareness Week, March 27 – April 2, the American Association of Endodontists wants to dispel the negative myths surrounding this dental treatment and encourage patients who need a root canal to see an endodontist who will skillfully provide this treatment.

“Nothing looks, feels or functions as well as your natural teeth. Choosing to save a tooth with root canal treatment will help you sustain your ability to bite and chew and maintain the natural appearance of your smile,” said AAE President Dr. Clara M. Spatafore.

More than 15 million root canals are performed each year in the U.S., and the vast majority of root canal patients – 89 percent – say they were satisfied when they received treatment from an endodontist, a dentist who specializes in root canals. And yet 70 percent of U.S. respondents in the AAE’s recent survey also said they feared having a root canal.

“Ironically, when patients have an infected tooth, a root canal is the very procedure that can save it,” said Dr. Spatafore. “Many patients do not realize that, just like any other medical specialty, significant advances in technology have enabled endodontists to perform root canals safely and comfortably.”

Endodontists are dentists who have completed at least two additional years of American Dental Association-approved advanced specialty education and training in the diagnosis and treatment of tooth pain. Their practice is focused on preserving natural teeth, mostly through performing root canal treatment.

AAE research shows that patients who have experienced root canal treatment are six times more likely to describe it as “painless” than patients who have not had root canal treatment. The AAE video, Endodontists Put Root Canal Patients at Ease, shows testimonials of thankful patients who quickly learned that the treatment they feared was painless, and only improved their life.

For further information about the AAE and Root Canal Awareness Week, please contact Meredith Friedman, public relations coordinator, at mfriedman@aae.org.

About the American Association of Endodontists

The American Association of Endodontists, headquartered in Chicago, Ill., represents more than 7,200 members worldwide. Endodontics is one of nine dental specialties formally recognized by the American Dental Association. The AAE, founded in 1943, is dedicated to excellence in the art and science of endodontics and to the highest standard of patient care. The Association inspires its members to pursue professional advancement and personal fulfillment through education, research, advocacy, leadership, communication and service.

Root Canal Awareness Week

Sponsored by the AAE, Root Canal Awareness Week provides an opportunity to dispel long-standing myths about root canal treatment and increase understanding of the procedure as one that is virtually painless. The week also seeks to raise awareness of endodontics as a specialty and highlight the importance of endodontists, the dentists who specialize in root canal treatment.
CHICAGO, March 16, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — A dad in New York, a mom in Los Angeles, and their daughter receiving life saving treatment in Chicago – while a scattered scenario, this is not an uncommon one for Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, which treats women and young girls from all over the country who suffer from eating disorders, substance and drug abuse issues, co-occurring disorders, trauma and other mental illnesses. And because of this, Timberline Knolls is piloting a new program to utilize the latest in technology, in the form of Skype, to clinically enhance its family therapy sessions and better achieve everyone’s number one goal; lifelong recovery for the residents at Timberline Knolls.

“Families are one of the most powerful resources available to individuals in their recovery,” according to Stan Selinger, PhD, clinical psychologist and Family Therapy Coordinator at Timberline Knolls. “And by using Skype, we are able to improve the experience of our family therapy sessions by making these sessions as close to being there in person as possible – which can many times help put everyone at ease and allow for more honest dialogue. Skype also allows for me to analyze the non-verbal messages and reactions of the family members involved, which cannot be done via conference call.”

“Helping our residents achieve lifelong recovery is our top priority at Timberline Knolls,” said James Gresham, CEO at Timberline Knolls. “And because of this, we are constantly analyzing the newest in technology that’s out there and implementing the technology that will help improve our treatment process.”

In addition to utilizing this technology in family therapy sessions, Timberline Knolls will also use this to better enhance the discharge process. “Many times, prior to a resident leaving for a lower level of care, such as transitional or outpatient facilities, face to face meetings are either required or preferred,” said Mark DeDonato, LCSW, ACSW, Director of Discharge Planning and Primary Therapist at Timberline Knolls. “Skype allows for these meetings to happen when many times distance and means of travel might be limiting. Ultimately, we can better ensure proper care for our residents once they leave Timberline Knolls.”

Skype provides easier and more meaningful accessibility for families and residents, and with 70% of the residents at Timberline Knolls coming from out of state, it is a valuable addition for all, and Timberline Knolls is excited to launch this pilot program.

Camp STAR, the Chicago area’s only summer camp offering evidence-based therapy for children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and other behavioral, emotional and social difficulties, begins its fourth season in June.

The camp, whose name stands for Summer Treatment for ADHD and Related Issues, is a partnership of the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Jewish Council for Youth Services.

The director of Camp STAR, Dr. Mark Stein, professor of psychiatry at UIC’s Institute for Juvenile Research, says that the program is not only effective in reducing ADHD symptoms, but in teaching skills to children and their parents that can improve social functioning. Children with ADHD and associated problems often struggle to fit in at typical camps that do not address their special needs, Stein said.

“At Camp STAR we have the opportunity to provide a very intensive treatment using behavior modification, modeling, medication and by looking at a variety of activities — how the child participates in sports, and how the family structures the home,” Stein said. “We’re able to dramatically change their behavior. The really exciting thing is that many of the children, by the end of the summer, have had a success experience, and it translates into them feeling better about themselves.”

Every child gets an individualized treatment plan to teach and reward social skills, improve attention, and control impulsive behaviors. A one to two staff-to-camper ratio ensures that each child receives individual attention. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students in psychology, education, or health-related fields staff Camp STAR.

Camp STAR is based on the behavioral therapy principles used in the Multimodal Treatment Study of ADHD, which showed that children who participated in a summer treatment program obtained a high level of success with lower doses of medication than children who did not receive behavioral treatment.

Camp STAR combines typical camp activities with behavioral treatments to improve social skills and anger management, reduce oppositional behaviors, and enhance self-esteem.

Campers express their creativity through arts and crafts, and work on classroom behavior in the Academic Learning Center. Weekly parent training sessions will discuss techniques to improve child behavior at home and family relations.

Camp STAR also includes a research component to help investigators learn more about ADHD.

Last year, Stein and collaborators from the University of Chicago examined the relationship between behavioral improvement in ADHD symptoms, sleep, and nutritional intake during the program. They found that even when campers were prescribed stimulant medication for their ADHD — which often has a negative effect on sleep — the children’s sleep normalized on days they were at camp, but varied on weekends when they were not at camp.

This year, Stein plans to look at interventions aimed at improving children’s sleep patterns.

“Variable sleep patterns increase the risk for a number of negative health problems, such as obesity,” Stein said. “We’re going to look at the relationship between what their sleep is like at night, their behavior during the day, and their nutrition. We know that as their behavior improves their sleep improves, but now we want to see if the reverse happens.”

Children ages 6-12 with ADHD, oppositional disorders, learning disabilities, anxiety, and social challenges associated with high-functioning Autism/Asperger’s syndrome may be eligible. Camp STAR starts June 13 and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each weekday until July 29 in Highland Park, Ill.

She says some are even eating Kleenex to stay full so they don’t feel hungry. Kimberly Dennis, M.D., and Medical Director at Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, a residential treatment center for eating disorders and addictions, warns about the dangers of this behavior, and says there might be deeper problems hidden below the surface.

“I could call this the tissue issue, and it would sound funny, but I’m not laughing. This type of behavior can cause serious health complications,” said Dr. Dennis. “I have worked with anorexics, bulimics and women with other disorders who eat non-nutritive substances to fill themselves up as a measure to control their weight. In other words, they avoid eating food which contains calories.” Besides the physical problems associated with poor nutrition, this can cause intestinal problems, pain, bloating, and even blockage and ruptures in extreme cases.

Dr. Dennis adds, “People who put their health and lives at risk to look a certain way need to take a deeper look at what’s really going on in their lives, beyond the physical. Eating tissue to stay thin is a perfect example of this. Many times the eating disorder, disordered eating and other forms of self harm are associated with depression, anxiety, low self esteem and/or trauma.

“I implore women not to idolize these thin, model-like frames, which do not represent a healthy body,” said Dr. Dennis. “Stay away from images of anorexic looking models or actors, and surround yourself with healthy women who affirm their own beauty and who can help you affirm yours, too.”

Triple Chronotherapy offers the most rapid treatment for depression

CHICAGO, Jan. 25, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — A new program in psychiatric chronotherapy that provides the quickest methods to relieve depression is now available at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Using light therapies and sleep-wake cycle adjustments to shift circadian rhythms, these treatments offer natural antidepressant options that do not require medication. Foremost among these strategies is a new outpatient protocol referred to as “triple chronotherapy.” This new technique is an intensive three-day regimen where sleep, wakefulness and light exposure are prescribed at specific times.

“Triple chronotherapy is a natural, ultra-rapid therapy that typically reduces depressive symptoms within one-to-two days,” explains Northwestern Medicine psychiatrist John Gottlieb, MD, who is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This approach doesn’t require medications, but it’s every bit as biologically active as antidepressant medications.”

Circadian rhythms are the fluctuations of certain physiological variables that occur over a 24-hour period, like sleeping, for instance. Circadian-shifting approaches, like bright-light therapy and dawn stimulation, have long been proven to effectively treat depression and other emotional disorders. Triple chronotherapy is no different, and has been used in Europe for nearly two decades in the successful treatment of unipolar and bipolar depression, as well as seasonal affective disorder. However, due to the intensiveness of the approach, patients were required to remain in the hospital during treatment. For the first time, the triple chronotherapeutic protocol is being administered on an outpatient basis, and Northwestern Medicine is one of few centers to offer this in the US.

“Chronotherapy has been demonstrated to be effective,” said Gottlieb. “However, it is not used for patients with psychotic depression or for patients who are bipolar and not on medication. Additionally, patients with eye disorders may be unable to undergo light therapy.”

As he explains, the first part involves wake therapy which requires a period of extended wakefulness over one night and the following day. This acts as an antidepressant response-inducer, jump starting an improvement in mood. Following wake therapy, patients move their sleep period earlier (sleep phase advance) and begin using bright light at prescribed times.

Bright light therapy requires a specially designed light box that generates high-intensity, fluorescent illumination. Patients can read, work and watch television during bright light therapy, which requires they sit 12 inches from the light source for 30 to 120 minutes each day. Sleep phase advance moves the time of sleep onset and awakening forward and is used to consolidate the fast induction of mood improvement.

Chronotherapeutic treatments can also be used with antidepressant and other psychiatric medications. These combinations can both enhance and expedite treatment response. According to Gottlieb, standard, pharmacological therapy for depression takes between two to eight weeks before significant improvement occurs. Bright light therapy generally produces an antidepressant response within one to two weeks, while triple chronotherapy can induce remissions within hours.

“Triple chronotherapy provides a faster and lasting antidepressant option for many people who struggle with depression,” Gottlieb said.

CHICAGO, Jan. 6, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Two of the nation’s leading experts in eating disorder treatment and family therapy will make their treatment advice available online, free to the public this month. Kimberly Dennis, M.D., medical director, and Stan Selinger, PhD, family therapy coordinator, from Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, are the featured speakers for MentorCONNECT’s January teleconference on Family Healing and Communication. Dr. Dennis and Dr. Selinger will present on how patients can best communicate their needs for support to their loved ones and how loved ones can best offer support to the patient during the recovery process. The teleconference takes place on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 8:00 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. (CST).

Dr. Dennis and Dr. Selinger specialize in eating disorder and addiction treatment at Timberline Knolls, a leading private residential treatment center near Chicago for eating disorders, alcoholism, drug addiction and mood disorders, with or without trauma, a dual diagnosis or a co-occurring disorder.

“One of the biggest roadblocks to recovery is a lack of support from loved ones, but many of those suffering from an eating disorder don’t understand how to reach out and ask for help, and on the reverse side – many loved ones don’t know how to help,” says Dr. Dennis. “Groups like MentorCONNECT provide survivors with an educational outlet like these monthly teleconferences, and I am happy to offer my own expertise on the subject.”

A global online eating disorders mentoring community, MentorCONNECT provides individuals with the means to break through the isolation of eating disorders by sharing the tools of recovery in supporting relationships. Members connect both individually and in groups with mentors to share experiences, provide guidance, and help each other through the struggles and triumphs of their journeys. Each month, MentorCONNECT holds a free teleconference with nationally-recognized eating disorders experts and survivors open to all MentorCONNECT members and the general community.

“Eating disorders affect not only the person suffering from the disease, but also their families and loved ones. The importance of family in recovering from an eating disorder cannot be overstated,” adds Dr. Selinger. “A teleconference is a great way to communicate with those individuals who seek information, help and guidance in order to find lifelong recovery from their disease, and for the loved ones and family members trying to support them in the best way possible.

CHICAGO, Dec. 22, 2010 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Recent studies have shown that one of the most important building blocks to a successful recovery is when a family is involved in the process. Stan Selinger, PhD, has always championed this particular aspect of treatment at Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, which is why Timberline Knolls is proud to announce Dr. Selinger as its new Family Therapy Coordinator. This represents a natural progression for Dr. Selinger after nearly five years of continuous contribution to the residents at Timberline Knolls and over 30 years of experience within the field.

Dr. Selinger has been a part of Timberline Knolls since its inception, specializing and developing the individual, adolescent and family therapy treatment programs. “Families are one of the most powerful resources available to individuals in their recovery,” according to Dr. Selinger, “and at Timberline Knolls, family therapy emphasizes the whole system of interpersonal relationships in a resident’s life.”

Dr. Selinger believes that all family members influence those in need of healing. “Family members can learn better ways to interact with each other,” said Dr. Selinger. In family therapy at Timberline Knolls, family roles, rules, boundaries and behavior patterns are explored and discussed. “This helps families identify their strengths and weaknesses, leading to a discovery of abilities to function in healthier ways,” he said. “Not only does the resident go through a recovery process, but the family also will go through their own recovery.” Following the Family Assessment, the entire family is brought together for Family Therapy sessions. In addition to the Family Therapy sessions, Dr. Selinger also co-developed and co-facilitates the Multi-Family Group program where families learn and discuss significant issues and are supported by hearing how other families go through the recovery processes. He also oversees the Family Dynamic Group where residents learn about issues related to families and how to better relate to their own.

Highly regarded by his colleagues, Dr. Selinger has presented at many professional conferences, been published in professional journals and presented extensively. Having been in private practice for more 30 years, his areas of expertise include: eating disorders, substance abuse, self harm, suicide behavior, trauma, precocious development, Biblical psychotherapy, the family communications, creative discipline, group dynamics, relaxation responses and individuation and attachment issues.

Lance Bass has joined the ranks of celebrities teaming with PETA, posing with his rescue dogs Dingo and Foster. The new campaign encourages prospective pet owners to always consider adoption over purchasing animals.

Bass tells PETA, “The most loyal, loving pets definitely come from the pound, because I think they know where they come from. I think they started with a rough life, being sent out, not being loved and wanted, and I think they really know that and it stays with them the rest of their life.” Bass adopted his pups seven years ago.

“You know when I was a kid watching ‘Price Is Right,’ I would always hear Bob Barker say, ‘Help control the pet population: Get your dogs spayed or neutered,’” Bass says. “People are not spaying and neutering like they should be, and there’s just so many dogs that really need a loving home.”

According to PETA, roughly 8 million dogs and cats annually enter animal shelters in the US .

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals made news yesterday by condemning an episode of ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska’ where Palin shot a caribou. “Sarah seems to think that resorting to violence and blood and guts may lure people into watching her boring show. But the ratings remain as dead as the poor animals she shoots,” the statement read.

In his first interview since undergoing aggressive treatment to battle stage 4 throat cancer, the 66-year-old Oscar winner tells the Hollywood Reporter that while the illness has “certainly put a little perspective on mortality” it’s also “shown me what family is.”

Douglas is already prepping for the title role in director Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Liberace,’ a bio pic of the famed entertainer, which is set to begin shooting in May or June. “I’ve got a bunch of tapes of performances,” Douglas tells THR. “I’m thinking; I’m a blank slate. Everything shows me he was a lovely man; I just want to reconfirm that.”

But before Douglas can throw himself into the ‘Traffic’ director’s much-delayed film, his focus is squarely on his health. In January, the ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ star will have a PET scan to determine whether his tumor has been eliminated entirely.

Until recently, Douglas had been keeping an especially low profile as he recovered from eight weeks of intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment. But over the Thanksgiving holiday, the actor was spotted looking happy and healthy with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their two children, Dylan, 10, and Carys, 7, at Disney’s Epcot theme park. Concerns over the cancer treatment’s effects on the actor’s distinctive voice also appear to have been presumptive, as THR notes that during its interview Douglas sounded “as seductive as ever.”

The good news is in marked contrast to reports that surfaced in mid-October that had the actor on his deathbed — a charge his longtime press rep, Alan Burry, emphatically denied. Whispers about the actor’s condition began after ‘Wall Street’ director Oliver Stone told reporters at a press conference in Berlin that the state of Douglas’ health was “precarious.” Soon after, rumors circulated that the actor had altered his will and that his 93-year-old father, legendary actor Kirk Douglas, had relocated to New York to be with his son.

Burry shot down all of the allegations. “Michael is totally focused on his recovery … he hasn’t changed his will recently, and he isn’t contemplating changing it,” Burry told PEOPLE in October. “It’s been very difficult, but doctors are very pleased with how he responded to treatment. They think he’s doing really well.”

Douglas has also been visiting his son Cameron at the Pennsylvania prison where he is serving a five-year sentence for dealing large quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine. “He’s not going every day and not as often as he would like, but he is still visiting with him,” Burry told RadarOnline.

The actor — who filmed his part in Soderbergh’s next project, the action-thriller ‘Haywire’ (due in April), before his cancer diagnosis — also recently received good news in his ongoing legal battle with ex-wife Diandra Douglas over her claim to part of his earnings from ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.’ Diandra had claimed she was entitled to half of Michael’s earnings from the ‘Wall Street’ sequel as part of her divorce settlement from the actor, which included a stipulation that she receive 50 percent of any earnings he receives from any movies he did — including residuals, merchandising and ancillary rights — during their 23-year marriage. According to Diandra’s lawyers, that provision includes any “spinoffs” of his films.

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Matthew Cooper dismissed the case on Nov. 15, citing his opinion that a New York courtroom was not an appropriate setting for the suit because Michael and Diandra’s divorce was finalized in California. “He’s thrilled,” Michael’s lawyer, Marilyn Chinitz, told the New York Post at the time of the verdict. “This is the right decision … This action should have never been brought in the first place.”

Diandra Douglas now must consider whether she wants to drop the suit or refile it in California.

Having made it through what has been an extremely rough year, Douglas is optimistic about the future. “As I looked through the stats, I didn’t think of this as life and death; I just saw it as an illness to get over. So I didn’t dig into the bottom of my soul to see what I could see,” the actor tells THR. “But It showed me a love that I never knew really existed.”

Lindsay Lohan, 24, was spotted looking healthy and working out at a Los Angeles gym on Thanksgiving Day, according to RadarOnline. Meanwhile, TMZ reports that she went shopping yesterday for Gucci and Michael Kors at a retail center about 30 miles from Betty Ford.

Yet another LiLo sighting placed her at a Starbucks with friends, relaxing with some caffeine and smokes on Saturday.

She reportedly spent part of Thanksgiving Day with her father, eating a turkey dinner he prepared for her and a group of friends (Dad and daughter seem to be patching up their relationship after a volatile past, including estrangement). And she told a photographer last week that she has been working out five days a week while in rehab.

The company of friends and family (not to mention retail therapy) may be a comfort as Lohan’s once-hot career languishes while her legal troubles and substance-abuse treatment dominate her time. On a weekend pass away from rehab earlier this month, the actress reportedly went to a business meeting and parted ways with the ‘Inferno’ director who, earlier this year, had cast her in his much-hyped biopic about porn star Linda Lovelace; he then admitted it was getting “impossible” to move forward with her attached to the project, and offered the lead role to Malin Akerman.

The actress has been ordered by the court to remain in rehab until Jan.3, after violating her probation earlier this year by failing a drug test. No word on whether Lohan’s Thanksgiving break from rehab was negotiated by her attorney or whether it was an earned respite decided upon by the Betty Ford staff.

Now comes word that filming will begin with a new star, Malin Akerman, playing the role of Linda Lovelace. Wilder’s biopic is based on the late porn star’s autobiography, published in the ’80s after Lovelace denounced her ‘Deep Throat’ stardom, claiming she was coerced into pornography at gunpoint by a cruel husband.

Akerman, 32 and a native of Sweden, played Vince Vaughn’s wife in the comedy ‘Couples Retreat,’ and sizzled as Laurie Jupiter / Silk Spectre II in ‘Watchmen.’ She’ll soon be seen with Jennifer Aniston in Judd Apatow’s 2011 film ‘Wanderlust.’

When Wilder began talking to the press about Lohan’s departure from the project, he said, “We’ve already lined up somebody else who we are really happy with.”

Lohan’s publicist, meanwhile, has made it clear that her client was never fired, but chose to walk away from the dark, dramatic role. A source tells RadarOnline, “Lindsay has realized that in order to get her life and career back on track, she has to be very selective with her projects,” the insider says.

“She wants to pursue projects like the ones that made her successful….She also realizes that she doesn’t need to identify with roles that relate to issues she dealt with. Everyone on her treatment team has stressed that.”

Lohan is due to reside in the Betty Ford Center until Jan. 3.
