CHICAGO, Jan. 21, 2011 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Building on the success of its long tradition of celebrating books, writing, and authors, the Chicago Tribune has expanded its Literary Series to include Author Talks, a new monthly series of one-on-one discussions with authors about their new releases and beloved classics, led by Chicago Tribune Literary Editor Elizabeth Taylor. The Author Talks series launches with Amy Chua, author of the provocative new book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, to be held at the Tribune Tower event space, 435 N. Michigan Avenue, Thursday, February 17, 2011.

“In a city with a deep literary tradition, the Tribune’s books and literature events reach an audience seeking illumination, education and entertainment. The intimate, new Author Talks series augments the well established Printers Row Lit Fest in June and the Chicago Tribune Literary Prize in November. Chicagoans who enjoy the written word will certainly find themselves sated this year,” said Taylor.

Author Talks offer audiences a rare opportunity to interact with favorite authors – or discover new ones – in the context of an intimate salon led by Chicago Tribune Literary Editor Elizabeth Taylor. A question & answer session is part of each Author Talks, along with a “meet & mingle” reception in which audience members are encouraged to continue the dialogue. The author will be on hand to sell and sign books.

The initial Author Talks lineup includes:

Bestselling author Amy Chua, discussing her recent release, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (Penguin). Her witty, provocative, and utterly absorbing memoir of her experience in extreme parenting reveals the rewards—and the costs— of raising her children the Chinese way. Liz Taylor interviews Amy Chua at the Tribune Tower event space, 435 N. Michigan Avenue, Thursday, February 17, at 7 p.m.

The universally acclaimed Joyce Carol Oates returns to Chicago on the heels of A Widow’s Story (Harper Collins, publication date: Feb. 15). The author’s poignant, intimate memoir about the unexpected death of Raymond Smith, her husband of forty-six years, details its wrenching, surprising aftermath. A recent recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award, Oates’ novels (Blonde, The Gravedigger’s Daughter, Little Bird of Heaven, etc.) rank among the very finest in contemporary American fiction. Oates will appear at the Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State Street, Thursday, March 31, at 6:30 p.m. Admission for this Author Talks is free. Admission to the “meet & mingle” reception with the author is $10.

Alexander McCall Smith, the bestselling author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, has written more than 60 books, including academic titles, short story collections, and a number of immensely popular children’s books. McCall Smith will sit down to review his extensive career and take questions about his most popular character, Detective Precious Ramotswe, at Elmhurst College, 190 Prospect Avenue, Sunday, April 3, at 4 p.m.

Kathryn Stockett‘s The Help (Putnam) shares the story of three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town and changes the way women–mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends–view one another. The Help is Stockett’s first novel and is being made into a major motion picture from Dreamworks Studios. Stockett will take the stage at a location TBA Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m. Tickets for this event will include a copy of The Help in paperback and are priced at $20.

Other Author Talks are planned for September 21 and October 19, with authors to be announced.

Unless otherwise noted, tickets for most Author Talks programs are $10 each and can be purchased by calling (312) 222-3348 or visiting www.chicagotribune.com/tribnation.

The Printers Row Lit Fest, founded as the Printers Row Book Fair in 1985 by the Near South Planning Board, was purchased by the Chicago Tribune in 2001 as part of its ongoing commitment to the written word and its support of literacy and literary endeavor. It is considered the largest free outdoor literary event in the Midwest-drawing more than 125,000 book lovers to the two-day showcase, featuring more than 200 booksellers from around the country and more than 100 free literary programs on seven stages. The 2011 Printers Row Lit Fest will take place June 4 and 5.

The Chicago Tribune annually presents a series of Literary Prizes, including its signature Chicago Tribune Literary Prize, awarded each fall since 2002 to a “prominent person in American letters,” in conjunction with the Chicago Humanities Festival. The Chicago Tribune Literary Prize was awarded to playwright-fiction writer-actor Sam Shepard in 2010, in front of an audience of nearly 2,000 at Orchestra Hall. The Heartland Prizes are also presented each fall, and since 1988, have paid tribute to an author of an outstanding book published from June of the prior year to June of that year. The 2010 Heartland winners were E. O. Wilson for Anthill and Rebecca Skloot for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The Tribune’s other awards include its Young Adult Literary Prize, presented in recognition of a lifetime of achievement reaching young adult readers, and the Nelson Algren Short Story Prize, named for one of the city’s best-known writers and attracting entries from across the country. A special event at Printers Row Lit Fest in June celebrates the winners from both these contests.

The Chicago Tribune Literary Series is just one part of Trib Nation, a new initiative of community outreach by the Chicago Tribune that also includes Chicago Live!, the weekly live radio show taping showcasing who and what is making news in Chicago each week; Chicago Forward: Conversations About the Future, a series of live gatherings of policymakers exploring issues of great importance to the Chicago region; programs by Chicago Tribune columnists and personalities; and TribU, a multi-platform series focusing on personal and professional enrichment, including classes and seminars led by Chicago Tribune journalists. For 163 years, the Chicago Tribune has been a market-leading newspaper publication of Tribune Company. Reaching three million readers each week in the greater Chicago area, the publication is known for its award-winning journalism. The Tribune‘s news focus is centered on the Chicago experience, community issues and government, the local economy and business, as well as entertainment, culture and sports.

A 19-year-old parolee has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Chicago Police Officer Michael Flisk and a former Chicago Housing Authority cop, who were killed following a Friday burglary on the South Side.

Timothy Herring Jr., of the 8100 block of South Manistee, could face the death penalty if convicted, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Flisk, an evidence technician and 19-year veteran with the department, responded to the 8100 block of South Burnham Avenue Friday after former CHA officer Stephen Peters called police. Peters, 44, reported that his GT Mustang had been stolen. Flisk was discussing the burglary with Peters in the alley when a gunman approached and fatally shot both men.

Calumet Area detectives told the Chicago Tribune that Herring stole the vehicle, and killed Flisk and Peters because he did not want to be caught. Peters’ father told the paper that the teen left a substantial amount of evidence behind, though police were not disclosing what that evidence was Monday evening.

Aside from the murder charges, the Sun-Times reports that Herring has also been charged with an “unrelated June 18 attempted murder.” A source told the Tribune the victim did not press charges in June fearing that Herring would harm his mother.

Flisk was the fifth Chicago police officer to be shot and killed this year and the second in one week. Officer David Blake was found fatally shot in his SUV Monday on the South Side.

“There hasn’t been a year this bad since the 1960s,” Fraternal Order of Police president Mark Donahue told the Chicago Tribune over the weekend.

Officer Flisk is survived by his wife and four children. Peters, a military veteran, was retired after years of working for the Chicago Housing Authority and a suburban police department, NBC Chicago reports.

As the department tried to piece together yet another police officer’s murder, hundreds of people paid respects to Officer David Blake at his funeral on Sunday.

“The thought that someone can shoot and kill a police officer is simply unacceptable,” police Supt. Jody Weis said Friday.

Visitation for the Flisk is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 30 at Brady and Gill Buneral Home in Evergreen Park from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m, according to the Chicago Police Department. Funeral services will follow on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel.

Herring has been living in the South Side neighborhood since he was released from prison on parole Sept. 14 after being convicted of armed robbery. His bond hearing is set for Tuesday.

Illinois Republican Mark Kirk will be sworn in to the U.S. Senate on Monday afternoon, and says his first priority as a senator will be to turn the economy around.

Kirk will be sworn in at 4:30 p.m. Monday by Vice President Joe Biden in the United States Senate Chambers, the Associated Press reports. Kirk will fill the remainder of Sen. Roland Burris’ term, which will give him the opportunity to work during the lame duck session–and get a six-week head start on other newly elected senators.

In a Monday Chicago Tribune editorial, Kirk laid out what his top priorities in the Senate will be. From the Tribune:

The first Senate bill I will introduce will be the Spending Control Act. This bill builds on two recent successful examples of our democracy making the right decisions for our long-term future. First, in the 1980s, the bipartisan Grace Commission set the standard for serious oversight by identifying federal spending that would add little to our nation’s growth, but much to its debt. Second, the three military base closing commissions showed that bipartisan dignitaries, once given the authority to submit a proposal to Congress for a straight up or down vote, actually cut spending where others failed.

The Spending Control Act will marry these two proposals — a new Grace Commission with a mandate to realign federal spending against its actual income, and “base closing” procedural powers to submit its proposals for simple “yes” or “no” votes in Congress. Given the successful record of all three base closing commissions to implement their reductions, despite a great hue and cry, prospects would be good under this proposal for our greatest of all democracies to depart its current course toward national bankruptcy and crushing future debt.

Kirk also sat down with fellow U.S. Senator from Illinois, Democrat Dick Durbin, to discuss bills they can agree on, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

“Number-one: Ban sewage dumping in the Great Lakes,” Kirk told the paper. “I’ve been highly critical of Milwaukee. They built the not-so-Deep Tunnel. But most importantly: Detroit. Half of all sewage dumping in the Great Lakes is from one city. Roughly 24 billion gallons of sewage were dumped in the Great Lakes last year — 12 billion from Detroit.

He also told the paper he and Sen. Durbin support high-speed rail, and hope Wisconsin’s controversial decision to turn down federal money to expand their high-speed rail will benefit Illinois.

Kirk said he may not have to make a “yes” or “no” vote on extending former President Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy, since Democrats seem ready to extend the cuts for another two years.

Already, Kirk appears to be ready and willing to cross party lines. A few weeks ago, he vowed to support a bill that would give $7.4 billion in health care funds to workers who were sickened while cleaning up the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 attacks–a bill that many Republicans have come out against.

He also reportedly made it clear to Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell that he is a pro-choice “social moderate,” and would not always vote the party line, according to the Sun-Times.

“How do we get out of this mess?” Kirk wrote of the country’s economic problems in his Tribune editorial. “First, we cast aside the partisan differences and work across the aisle to solve this problem.”

As early as 10 a.m. Sunday, candidates and campaign workers filing petitions for the City of Chicago elections began lining up at 69 W. Washington, hoping to make it onto the ballot.

The early start is a Chicago tradition, as those who file their 12,500 valid signatures by 9 a.m. Monday are entered in a lottery to win a top spot on the February ballot.

The Rahm Beat

According to Rahm Emanuel’s campaign, an aide turned in about 90,000 signatures Monday morning–which means one in 16 Chicago voters signed a petition for Emanuel.

Democratic Party lawyer Mike Kasper told Early and Often that Emanuel will have no problem with signatures, but if issues arise over the validity of Emanuel’s residency, Kasper said he would represent the former White House Chief of Staff.

Emanuel announced his bid for Chicago mayor on Saturday, and released his first campaign ad of the season this weekend as well.

Republicans For Meeks?

Following through in several public vows, state Sen. James Meeks announced Sunday that he would indeed run for Mayor of Chicago.

While no Republican candidates have publicly discussed running for mayor, Meeks has a conservative stance on most social issues–including opposition to abortion and gay rights.

When he announced his candidacy Sunday, former Illinois Republican Party chairman Andy McKenna introduced him.

“Sen. Meeks has one clear priority — it was there clear the first time he ran for office: children and education,” McKenna said Sunday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Davis, Chico, Del Valle Are In

U.S. Rep. Danny Davis announced his candidacy on Sunday, vowing to bridge the gap between the city’s richest and poorest residents. Early and Often reports that Davis will not turn in signatures until deadline day–November 22.

Gery Chico is also expected to file an excessive amount of signatures on Monday. The Chicago Tribune reports that Chico, who is expected to arrive at the Chicago Board of Elections by 9 a.m., will file 52,254 petition signatures.

The son of City Clerk Miguel del Valle Miguel Del Valle also camped out early Monday to file his father’s petitions, NBC Chicago reports. Former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun is also expected to file before the Nov. 22 deadline.

Aside from the heated race to replace Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, the February 2011 ballot will also allow voters to pick a City Clerk, City Treasurer and 50 aldermen.

(WBEZ/Tony Arnold)

Metra riders leave a train on Monday morning.

Illinois U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is calling for an investigation into the pollution levels that could affect Metra passengers. That follows a Chicago Tribune story that shows diesel soot levels on some trains are abnormally high.

Sen. Durbin said he wants a study of Metra’s pollution levels by government agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In particular, he wants the agencies to look at the safety levels of what’s called diesel soot; particulates from diesel engines.

“Not only does it aggravate bronchial situations and pulmonary disease and asthma, but it really has been traced to cancer,” Durbin said. “It’s a serious issue.”

Durbin said he’d like to see newer engines in Metra trains, but that’s expensive. “$4 million for a new engine, $2 million to rehab an old engine. So, they’re looking at the reality of the bottom line,” Durbin said.

Durbin said in the meantime, Metra recently received grant money that would help it keep trains from having to sit for hours with their engines on while waiting to leave Ogilvie Transportation Center.

LOGANSPORT, Ind. (Pharos-Tribune) – Logansport firefighters pulled a small child from a burning home this morning.

The fire department responded to a call for a structure fire on 20th Street just after 9 a.m. with reports that there was a child trapped inside.

Within minutes of their arrival, assistant fire chief Dave Huff said, his crew was conducting a search for the child they estimated to be around 2 years old. Huff said visibility in the home was low with a large amount of thick, black smoke coming from the second story.

Firefighter Rick Bair found the boy in an upstairs bedroom under a pile of clothes. He was the only person still inside the home.

His mother was waiting for him outside the house, Huff said.

Clayton Freels of the Logansport Fire Department rode to Logansport Memorial Hospital with the child and said by the time they arrived at the hospital the boy was coughing and able to grab Freels’s hand.

The child is being flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

SAN DIEGO – Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn says he cancer in a salivary gland.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday that the parotid cancer was discovered last month.

The 50-year-old Gwynn faces radiation and chemotherapy treatments. He says doctors have told him they feel they caught the cancer early and “there was not much of it there.”

The cancer was diagnosed after the former Padres star had a third round of surgery since 1997 to remove a tumor on the parotid gland. The previous procedures found no malignancies.

Gwynn is San Diego State’s baseball coach, and the school confirmed Gwynn’s condition to The Associated Press. Gwynn plans to return to his alma mater, which he has coached since 2003.

Chicago’s school district is still planning to give a letter grade to every school—but not this year.

The Chicago Tribune today published leaked letter grades for every school in the system. Many were Ds or Fs. The grades came from a rating system CPS is still developing.

Schools chief Ron Huberman says the goal is to give parents a simple way of understanding how well their child’s school is doing. But he said the grades released were just a “first stab”:

HUBERMAN: And when we reviewed that first stab we said, No no no. This doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t arm folks with tools that they would then need to work together to improve the outcome of their school—and that’s the most important part of this.

CPS wants to release grades next year—along with a clear plan of what schools can do to improve.

HUBERMAN: The roadmap of how they go from an F to a D to a C to a B to an A.

New York City gives schools letter grades, but has struggled with how to do that.

In Chicago, parents at schools slated for closure have said they didn’t know the schools were performing poorly.

CHICAGO, July 28 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Tribune Interactive today announced the promotion of Julie Anderson to senior vice president/content and integration. In her new role, Anderson will oversee two groups:

Anderson will also assist in the continued development of the company’s newsrooms as dynamic digital content engines capable of meeting news and information needs day and night.

Anderson has been involved with interactive media since 1994. Most recently, she held the title of vice president/content and integration for Tribune Interactive. Other interactive roles at Tribune include vice president/new markets and director/local market operations. Her career with Tribune Company began at the Orlando Sentinel where she served as vice president and director/marketing and interactive and vice president and director/multimedia. Prior to Tribune, she held reporter and editor roles at other media companies in Florida.

“I have had many leadership roles at Tribune, and none more interesting and challenging than the job that lies ahead — deepening the relationships we have with our digital consumers,” said Anderson. “We have huge opportunities right now, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.”

TRIBUNE is one of the country’s leading multimedia companies, operating businesses in publishing, interactive and broadcasting.

CHICAGO (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Police are investigating after two men threw a rock and possibly shot a BB gun at the Tribune Tower building on North Michigan Avenue — damaging it early Sunday.

At 1:55 a.m. police responded to 435 N. Michigan Ave. for a call of criminal damage to property. A guard there told officers while sitting at the security desk, he heard a “loud popping noise’’ and then saw a rock being thrown through the revolving door, according to police.

The revolving door was damaged in an unidentified way. A side window also sustained a hole — possibly from a BB gun pellet, according to police.

Police said the guard then told officers he saw two suspects walking south on Michigan Avenue. The suspects were only described as men between the ages of 19 and 21, one of whom was 5-foot-11 and the other was about 5-foot-9, police said.

There was a camera that captured some of the incident and no one was in custody early Wednesday.

Editor’s note: Ruben Navarrette is a member of the San Diego Union-Tribune editorial board, a nationally syndicated columnist and a regular contributor to CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM.com

San Diego, California (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — For much of this election season, I saw a lot to admire in Marco Rubio. I liked the independence and courage he showed in going against the Republican Party establishment by challenging Gov. Charlie Crist in the U.S. Senate race in Florida. And when Rubio was viciously and unfairly attacked by presumptuous white liberals for not being authentically Latino, I liked him even more.

And now? Not so much.

It’s all because of how Rubio bungled his reaction to an Arizona law that — despite supporters’ assurances that it won’t lead to racial and ethnic profiling — is certain to lead to racial and ethnic profiling. In true Kerryesque fashion, Rubio was against the law before he was in favor of it.

As the intelligent, charismatic and well-spoken son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio rose through the ranks quickly to become speaker of the Florida Assembly before taking on Crist for the GOP Senate nomination. Rubio had not only vanquished Crist’s nomination hopes but, in effect, ran him out of the party. The governor is now running for the Senate as an independent, against both Rubio and presumptive Democratic nominee Kendrick Meek.

In fact, things were going smoothly for Rubio until Arizonans passed a law intended to deputize state and local police officers to act as surrogate immigration agents. The idea behind SB 1070 is to round up as many illegal immigrants as possible by requiring that police check the immigration status of people with whom they come in contact if officers have “reasonable suspicion” to believe that the person is the country illegally — whether police want to or not.

Despite the fact that the law is enormously popular with the GOP base, Rubio rightly opposed it as overly broad and flat-out dangerous. Just a few weeks ago, he said in a statement:

“States certainly have the right to enact policies to protect their citizens, but Arizona’s policy shows the difficulty and limitations of states trying to act piecemeal to solve what is a serious federal problem. From what I have read in news reports, I do have concerns about this legislation. While I don’t believe Arizona’s policy was based on anything other than trying to get a handle on our broken borders, I think aspects of the law, especially that dealing with ‘reasonable suspicion,’ are going to put our law enforcement officers in an incredibly difficult position. It could also unreasonably single out people who are here legally, including many American citizens. Throughout American history and throughout this administration we have seen that when government is given an inch it takes a mile.”

Rubio was right to be concerned. SB 1070 is such a deeply flawed piece of legislation that it had to be amended a week after it was signed. Supporters say the changes prevent racial and ethnic profiling. Now, police officers can prowl for illegal immigrants only in the course of enforcing some other law or ordinance. In the original version, all that was required was “lawful contact.”

Another change is that now, the state attorney general or a county attorney cannot investigate complaints based on a person’s race, color or national origin. The original law allowed for race, color and national origin to be considered as one of several factors and only prohibited law enforcement from focusing “solely” on those characteristics.

That was good enough for Rubio, who now says he backs the controversial law as amended. Apparently, his concerns about racial profiling have been assuaged.

Glad to hear it. Trouble is, now I have concerns about Rubio. He can’t be that gullible. So he must be in denial.

The amendments are totally cosmetic. In the real world of policing, it’s impossible for law enforcement officers — particularly those who lack the specialized training given to Border Patrol agents — to make assumptions about one’s legal status without taking race and ethnicity into account. We can tell them not to think about race and ethnicity, but that only makes them more likely to think about them. Anyone who claims otherwise is dishonest, disingenuous or delusional.

Besides, there was an additional change in the law that arguably makes it even more dangerous and more divisive. Now, the requirement that a police officer must determine the immigration status of an individual who they have a “reasonable suspicion” is in the country illegally extends to those instances where police respond to something as minor as city ordinance violations. That could include loud parties, barking dogs, cars on blocks, overcrowded apartments, etc. One can easily imagine neighbors turning in one another, and an environment that is already poisoned with resentment and fear becoming more so.

Supporters say they changed SB 1070. Believe it. They made it worse and more likely to lead to abuse. Anyone who doesn’t see that must be blind. Of course, ambition has been known to have that effect on people.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Ruben Navarrette.

(CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Everybody’s a critic.

No, really. In our tightly wired, Twittering world, everybody’s a critic — or expected to be one.

Movie studios count on early viewers to create buzz through blog posts and online comments. Fans’ day-of-release tweets play into word-of-mouth. Established film reviewers contribute their takes.

As summer movie season kicks into gear Friday, there are more voices than ever. And that’s just fine with Matt Atchity.

Atchity is the editor-in-chief of Rotten Tomatoes, the popular film review aggregation site. It’s at the nexus of old-style movie reviewers, who write several-hundred-word essays on current releases, and members of the public, who increasingly contributing their digital two cents.

The public can do it through RottenTomatoes.com as well as RT’s parent company, Flixster, the social site that characterizes itself as “the world’s largest online movie community.” There are also other review aggregators and online communities, such as RT’s rival, Metacritic.

He sees value in all sides.

“I think there’s a growth in the awareness and the interest in a movie fan,” he says. “When you first start watching movies, you just want to see what the cool movie is. When you’re younger, probably critics don’t matter as much … but as you get older, and you start to think ‘my time is a little more important’ or you’re just getting more sophisticated in your film tastes … you at least can get some education on what you’re watching.”

That may be small consolation to the nation’s established film critics, who have been battered by print media’s struggles, studio marketing strategies and Internet noise. Variety’s longtime critic, Todd McCarthy, was recently let go after 31 years; the TV show “At the Movies,” which in its most recent incarnation featured The New York Times’ A.O. Scott and the Chicago Tribune’s Michael Phillips, has been canceled.

Sean P. Means, the Salt Lake Tribune’s movie critic, has kept a list of all the movie critics who have lost their jobs or been reassigned since 2006. Those professionals serve a function, he says.

“My initial point was every time a paper loses the movie critic job … they lose a voice, and they lose a voice that’s unique to that paper,” he says. Local movie critics speak to their communities in distinct ways, he says, and don’t just review the blockbusters. They can pick up on films or aspects of films that might be important to a particular city.

What’s also being lost, says author and former film critic Jerry Roberts, is criticism’s literary tradition. Roberts traced the history of the genre in the recently published “The Complete History of American Film Criticism” and observes that thoughtful film pieces “are going by the wayside.”

Though he acknowledges the need for a basic judgment — most readers just “want a good Friday night,” he says — he laments the decline of more nuanced work.

“The people who got into the business in the first place in the film generation of the ’60s and ’70s, we wanted to write those things,” he says.

Marketing gold

Of course, the public and studios have long had a love-hate relationship with critics. They’ve been seen as ivory-towered authority figures with axes to grind, and many haven’t helped their cause with their attitudes toward mainstream flicks.

As Roberts’ book shows, it’s been that way for decades. As far back as 1933, Nation film critic Alexander Bakshy took a dim view: “Not only are there woefully few films that are worthy of serious consideration, but if you happen to be a film critic you are obliged to stop and analyze the incessant flow of bilge issuing from the film factories in Hollywood and elsewhere as if it were really to be measured by the standards of intellectual and artistic achievement,” he wrote.

As the Internet has created more critics, it’s also created more opportunities for studios to work around those critics or co-opt them.

“Movie studios are better than anyone at taking even a partial testimonial and turning it into marketing gold,” says marketing expert Pete Blackshaw, an executive with Nielsen Digital Strategic Services. Social media participants now play a larger role in selling movies; studio efforts start a year or more before a film’s scheduled release, enlisting opinion leaders, hardcore fans and various professionals to raise a film’s profile.

The Cashmere Agency was tapped to promote 2009′s “Ninja Assassin,” starring the relatively unknown Korean performer Rain.

“We wanted to make it relevant to U.S. audiences,” says the agency’s president, Seung Chung. To that end, the firm hired Raekwon of the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan to do an original song and video, incorporating clips from the film. That, in turn, was picked up by blogs, which led to stories in the trades, which increased fan chatter.

The film did poorly with mainstream critics; RottenTomatoes.com’s Tomatometer rated it at a poor 25 percent. But it did better with viewers, who helped it earn a steady $38.1 million at the domestic box office.

But marketing — whether old-style TV commercials or the latest social media app — can’t do everything.

“It still comes down to a lot of the same things that have always made movies successful: quality, scale or a hook,” says Josh Rose, digital creative director for the advertising and marketing firm Deutsch Los Angeles.

For all the attention paid to the immediacy of the Internet, it takes time to save or kill a film.

Much was made of “Bruno’s” poor showing last year, with Time’s Richard Corliss among others blaming its decline on the “Twitter effect” of instantly expressed negative word-of-mouth. But though such quick talk can have an effect, it’s one of many indicators, says Blackshaw. With the wealth of data those notes provide, studios can find ways of combating the buzz, including redirecting their marketing efforts.

‘Adapt or die’

So where does that leave movie criticism, the field of James Agee, Pauline Kael, Andrew Sarris and Siskel and Ebert? Will the more thoughtful critics find themselves increasingly marginalized?

The answer may come from a surprising source: Roger Ebert himself. Since losing his physical voice to cancer, the famed Chicago Sun-Times critic has made his written voice more prominent than ever, engaging movie fans on his Web site, sending out frequent Twitter updates and highlighting little-known films with his books and movie festival.

Read how Roger Ebert tweets about food, too

In a recent essay, “The Golden Age of Movie Critics,” he took a generally optimistic view. Though acknowledging the challenges of making a living at movie criticism, “I’m feeling good these days. … I know good movies are valued everywhere, and good writing,” he wrote, singling out several bloggers and contributors.

Means, too, believes that the future of criticism isn’t as dark as a vacant theater. It’s just in the midst of the same changes affecting many other fields, he says.

“It’s adapt or die,” he says. “If you want this job, and if you think you’re good at this job, and if you think you want to keep this job, you’ve got to adapt to the situation,” by blogging, engaging audiences and establishing a name.

And, he adds, it’s not like the critics on his departed list have gone away. Some have started their own sites, joined online-only outlets or gotten involved in other aspects of the film business. (McCarthy took a position with the New York Film Festival.)

They remain part of the conversation.

“It was brought to my attention by people who are on the list,” he says, ” ‘I’m not dead yet.’ “
