Quinn, Daley nix Ricketts’ plan for Wrigley Field

CHICAGO — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley are expressing skepticism about a plan by owners of the Chicago Cubs that seeks state help with the renovation of Wrigley Field. Daley said Monday he likes the idea of keeping the Cubs at Wrigley Field for at least 35 years. But he says he will not saddle his successor with a plan that hobbles amusement-tax growth. The Ricketts family wants Illinois to float up to $300 million in bonds to finance renovations at the 96-year-old ball park.

The proposal would use amusement tax dollars to rehab the ballpark. The owners of the Chicago Cubs are looking for some cash to renovate Wrigley Field, and they’re hoping taxpayers will contribute. The Ricketts family wants the State of Illinois to help fund the Wrigley renovations. They have a plan to get $300 million in bonds from the state. The Cubs would then pay back the money using the amusement tax that’s tacked on to Cubs’ ticket prices.

After seven mostly happy years with the Chicago Cubs, first baseman Derrek Lee has returned to the site of his favorite memory as a ballplayer: the tiny visiting clubhouse at historic Wrigley Field. Lee made his Atlanta Braves debut on Friday against the very team that dealt him away two days earlier. Batting cleanup, he waved his helmet as he received a standing ovation in the first inning. He then flied out on Ryan Dempster’s first pitch, stranding a runner at third.

A new look for Wrigley Field?

In conjunction with the 100-year anniversary of Wrigley Field in 2014, the Cubs are planning “a complete renovation of the ballpark.” The project will be called “Wrigley 20-14″ and include construction projects during the season so the Cubs can use it “for another 100 years,” according to President Crane Kenney. The focal point of the massive restructuring will be the long-talked-about “triangle building” to the west, a project that will include knocking down the outer wall on the third-base side to form a large open-air courtyard that would include concession areas and shops.
